Ok, I'm defining "expensive coffee" as

1) the slightly or significantly higher priced drinks with seventeen syllables in other languages you can get at the coffee shop, e.g. "vanilla mocha expresso latte",

2) the more expensive coffee you can buy at the store and then grind on your own.

Worth it? Not worth it? A mix?

Damnit to hell, though. The Maui Wowie franchise in our building went tits up. Their Kona blend punched all the neurons and lit up my entire day.

Never liked coffee, so I say "not worth it."

I'm not big on making tea, either, but I have been drinking Xing tea.

i drink Four-bucks coffee occasionally when i am out, especially in airports but for good ol coffee places like bob evans and cracker barrel have it all over the other places. as for a to-go style cup i really don't need to spend more than about a dollar to get coffee anymore. i would rather save my budget for ice cream

take home grind....medium priced is best for us

It is worth it every once in awhile for a change, otherwise it's just the regular old coffee to keep the blood flowing.

Coffee, bagels, doughnuts, sandwiches, etc. They don't have anywhere near the menu of Denny's, though.

I don't buy the foo-foo drinks, just a dark roast with a little cream. I do buy my own beans at the grocery because I like the taste of dark coffees. Sumatra is my favorite. There is a difference between that and Folgers etc.

Donut store coffee rocks, especially when you have it with donuts (or doughnuts, as Krispy Kreme spells it). At home, I use mid-priced beans from the local market.

Coffee shops are just convenient when I am out, and because I like iced coffee, but I really hate spending that much on one cup.
I like grinding beans at home because I feel like if they are more finely ground, then you get stronger coffee. I have no idea if that is true, but it's what I tell myself.

I make my own foo foo coffee at home. Just add some cinnamon while you brew, pour in some french vanilla creamer when it's done, and you have a little bit of heaven in a cup yummmm....

Tea is an imperialistic beverage.

Actually, I drink Lipton from a thermos whenever I'm on the road in the winter time. I'm a humble sovereign.

Dark roast with half and half for me. But ptui, NOT Folgers or any mass pregrinded crap. I buy the beans and grind them at the store. Usually at Costco. But I need a good albeit not super expensive coffee, I savor my morning cuppa too much!

Worth it, both for the feel good of sustainably grown and also for the good good awesome taste. We only have Zeke's Coffee in our restaurant. The whole neighborhood around the roastery smells fantastic.

All those fancy coffee drinks are just milkshakes with another name.

My wife joined the coffee-of-the-month club at Kauai coffee. She says it's great stuff.

I drink tea most of the time, but I do love a short double-shot nonfat mocha every so often.

You know what else? An envelope of hot chocolate mix with coffee instead of hot water. A guy I worked with used to do that and I thought he was weird but it's good.

Someone gave me a Starbucks GC so I'm buying their strong beans and having them grind it at the store. That's $10-11/lb. When the card runs out I'll go back to grocery store beans, either prepackaged (I can't remember the brand, it's an Italian name with gold packages), or the by the pound beans. I like the stronger, darker beans. No "breakfast blend" for me.

As for the $4-5 lattes and such, I don't buy those anymore. Trying not to be such a spendthrift. Also, Starbucks' syrups often taste very chemical to me.

Sometimes I'll go to Caribou Coffee and get a Depth Charge (coffee spiked with espresso). I do like Caribou Coffee's frou-frou drinks but I don't buy them anymore.

We have lots of coffee and tea stuff in our store. My favorites:

- the Republic of Tea's flowering tea kit
- the Keurig Donut Shop Coffee K-Cups
- the mini milk frother
- the Bialetti traveling french press mug

I wouldn't buy one for myself... probably not, at least. Buuuut I think they'd make a really cool gift. I can't imagine they wouldn't make someone happy.

The kit comes with 7 green tea blossoms, and a clear mug with a special lid that allows steam to escape... and we're selling it for $16 (they're usually about $32, but they're trying to make room for more stock).

I drink a lot of coffee and have been all over the map, from El Injerto to Blue Mountain to Kona to Gevalia to Starbucks etc etc., but now I am a devotee of good old Cafe Bustelo. I order it by the case from javacabana along with some of their other delicioso espresso roasts. As I've grown more habituated to coffee I find that the lighter roasts just don't do it for me.

Now, tea....I have lately gotten really into tea and have been drinking Mariage Freres Earl Grey Imperial and Casablanca blends. Traditionally I've been a Twinings drinker but I am exploring my tea options. A coworker of mine is from Kenya, she's going home at the end of the month and has promised to bring me back some loose black tea. I prefer the loose tea to the (forgive for what I may be about to do to this thread) tea bags.

Who here wants to try kopi luwak coffee?? I do!! Halvsies, anyone?

My alltime favorite tea is a Twinings tea, and I'm terribly disheartened that it's been discontinued.

Twinings Vanilla. It was pure dessert heaven. In fact, when I'd make a cup of this tea at work, people walking by my desk would comment on how wonderful it smelled. I would forego other treats for a cup of Twinings Vanilla... now it's ridiculously hard to find and if you CAN find it, it's ridiculously expensive. They do have several vanilla blends, but no longer carry the vanilla. I imagine it was very expensive to manufacture. I've tried other vanilla teas, but none come within the ballpark of this indulgence.

I'll keep an eye out for it, Heidi.

And forget Lipton or Luzianne. My fave regular tea is Typhoo.

I'm not a huge tea drinker but I do like Twinings Lapsang Souchong. I love the way it smells so woody. When I want something mild and caffeine free I'll have Mighty Leaf's Chamomile Citrus.

I like tea and coffee. I occasionally enjoy a Mocha Frappacino from Starbucks (had one this morning) and one of my co-workers has just gotten me addicted to the freshly brewed iced they sell. The black tea is nice and strong, the way I like it.

As for coffee, are we considering what you buy at the grocery store that is already ground but just as expensive as the whole beans, i.e. Seattle's Best? If so, that's what I buy. I don't need no stinking grinder! There is as difference between that and less expensive coffee. However, I'm also really fond of Denny's coffee. It's cheap but doesn't taste so.

I'm definitely a coffee person. I enjoy tea but I've never gotten the satisfaction from a cup of tea that I get from coffee.

As for expensive coffee being worth it, I'd say yes and no to the two examples. I think buying good coffee that you grind on your own and is super fresh can really make a difference. Really fresh coffee is heavenly. When it comes to the $6 flavored customized whipped-cream type drinks, I'd say it's not worth it. May as well be drinking a milkshake or a hot chocolate then, if I want coffee I'll just buy coffee. Maybe at most a flavored latte. Then again, I don't really like paying more than $2 for a drink.

It wasn't the Honey Chamomile Vanilla? I've even seen LOTS of vanilla almond teas. They do still have those.

The Vanilla Black Tea's no longer on the Twinings website... and Twinings no longer distributes it, but I suspect other retailers and buyers may have plenty of stock.

I've been on the lookout for a bit over a year now.
I look for it every time I visit a grocery store or store that sells teas and I never see it.

No, the expensive drinks at Starbucks are NOT worth it. No way.

As for beans, I buy mine at the grocery store (all their beans are the same price) and grind it in their machine. I think it's $11/lb. I grind it fine, usually on the espresso setting. I'm always happy on the day I bring home the coffee from the grocery store. Like today.

Fresh Roasted, ground at home is definitely worth it.

Leave the flavored crud for those that don't like coffee. It doesn't count. It is just another hot sugary drink. If that's what one wants then there is hot chocolate (melted chocolate in a cup, no milk).

Bought a tall caramel macchiato this morning it was $4.36 when I got to drinking it discovered the top inch of the container was all air. Fucking give me a full container of this beverage if you're going to charge me $4.36 for the fucking smallest size beverage you have. Dicks.

K-cups are expensive. I bought a machine, made a few cups, and decided it was crap. You have no control over the strength of the coffee. It's the same cup every time, and it's weak. I wasted my money. Just bought a Mr Coffee 5-cup machine, and it's great.
