Tonight the symphony performed a Beethoven piece I'd never heard of let alone heardWellington's Victory - Written in honor of his victory at Vitoria in 1813. I looked like the percussionist were have a ball simulating the battle, all sort of whirly-gigs and poppers.
Beethoven's String Quartets are available in many versions. I would like to draw attention to a really wonderful bargain on iTunes. The 1952 mono recording by the Vegh Quartet of the complete set {71 movements} is available for 3.99 Euro. The Vegh Quartet did a a stereo version in 1972 which is acclaimed as one of the very finest on record. Their earlier set done for the Haydn Society shares many of the same qualities and the mono sound is excellent. Listen to the samples on iTunes to get an idea of their approach. I have both the '52 and '72 versions and I wouldn't be without either. Certainly at the price it is an incomparable bargain.
This is real Beethoven, in stunning sound quality. Leonora no 3 with Kurt Masur and the Berliner Staatskapelle. Listen to a sound sample here:https://www.dropbox.com/s/sc3tlxveknh...
I don't doubt that this would be stunning, but unfortunately my PC did not capture the tonal quality.

I'm not sure I prefer their performances as compared to Adolph Busch and the boys. They're recordings seemed to be spinning on the TT more than any other quartet.
