Cindy | -4 comments So we'll do this by the seconding system.

You give a title. Please list it as
Book and Author

You are allowed 1 nomination and 1 second.
When we reach the first 5-7 books we'll vote and be on our way!

message 2: by [deleted user] (last edited Jul 23, 2010 12:50AM) (new)

I would like to nominate Assassin's Apprentice by Robin Hobb.

It's been on my shelf for a while and I am yet to read it.

Edit: It appears this has already been read.

message 4: by Richard (last edited Jul 23, 2010 01:12AM) (new)

Richard (mrredwood) | 165 comments Umm, didn't this group just read Assassin's Apprentice back in March? Yup: right here is where we discussed it.

BTW, excellent book, though — I gave it five stars — definitely read it!

Luckily, there's a GR List for the topic (although many aren't fantasy), and I'd like to nominate:

Poison Study , by Maria V. Snyder

A Goodreads author, and the book has an overall rating of 4.20! It does show up on some people's YA shelves, though.

message 5: by Venkat (new)

Venkat (venkatasubramanian) I would like to nominate The Way of Shadows (Night Angel, #1) by Brent Weeks

message 6: by Michael (new)

Michael (edifanob) I would like to nominate Farlander by Col Buchanan.

message 7: by Cecily (new)

Cecily (cecily6) I would like to second:

The Last Wish, Andrzej Sapkowski

message 8: by Kim (new)

message 9: by Donna (new)

Donna (deety) I second Poison Study.

message 10: by Cindy (new)

Cindy | -4 comments Ok so far I have

Way of Shadows
Poison Study (I was going to come in here and second it but you all beat me to it!)
The Last Wish

You all are quick on the gun with these updates! I'm off to bed I'll check in the morning!

message 11: by Cindy (new)

Cindy | -4 comments I should also mention that it doesn't have to be a goodreads author this month :). October is our Goodreads Author month so I'm preparing everyone early because I hope the author will participate. Then again all authors are welcome here any time! The doors open!

Lost Planet Airman | 766 comments How about The Man Who Never Missed by Steve Perry? I'd like to re-read a little fluff for summer reading...

If that does not qualify, perhaps a another more recent Perry -- The Musashi Flex

message 13: by Snail in Danger (Sid) (last edited Jul 23, 2010 04:52AM) (new)

Snail in Danger (Sid) Nicolaides (upsight) | 540 comments Are we allowed to nominate an omnibus? If so, I nominate The Book of Jhereg. If not, I nominate Jhereg. Both are by Steven Brust.

(Oof, suddenly I wish I had more nominations. I'd forgotten how many books I like happen to feature assassins.)

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) Wow. I'd like to read pretty much all of these. This should be a fun group read.

message 15: by Jonathan (new)

Jonathan | 1 comments Artemis Entrei

message 16: by John (new)

John | 129 comments I would second either Jhereg or The Book of Jhereg by Steven Brust/

For what it's worth, The Book of Jhereg includes the first three books in the series but still only clocks in at 480 pages (trade paperback).

message 17: by AJ (new)

AJ (anersword) | 36 comments This is a great caper/slight assassin-ish book:

Mistborn: The Final Empire by Brandon Sanderson

message 18: by Mihir (new)

Mihir | 2 comments I would like to nominate Waylander by David Gemmell & as my second choice would be Spider's Bite by Jennifer Estep.

message 19: by Kara (new)

Kara Babcock (tachyondecay) | 137 comments Mihir wrote: "I would like to nominate Waylander by David Gemmell & as my second choice would be Spider's Bite by Jennifer Estep."

"Second" means you second someone else's nomination, so if you're nominating Waylander, then I will nominate

Spider's Bite, by Jennifer Estep

message 20: by Michael (new)

Michael (mjbarb) | 1 comments I second "Poison Study"

message 21: by Valerie (last edited Jul 23, 2010 06:48AM) (new)

Valerie Long (valeriejlong) | 10 comments Die Schattenkämpferin - Der Fluch der Assassinen by Licia Troisi
I don't know if there's an English edition available yet, but I found it great.
Cheers, Valerie

message 23: by Earl (new)

Earl C (eral) Either The Way of Shadows or Jhereg would be excellent choices. Consider this a seconding. ;)

message 24: by Dan (new)

Dan Ferguson (torquenator) | 3 comments Venkat wrote: "I would like to nominate The Way of Shadows (Night Angel, #1) by Brent Weeks"

I second that nomination

message 25: by Carolyn (new)

Carolyn (seeford) | 203 comments I'd like to nominate Shadow's Son and I'll second Waylander.

message 26: by Iyanna (new)

Iyanna I nominate The Way of Shadows and second Jhereg.

message 27: by Isca Silurum (new)

Isca Silurum Waylander sounds good to me.

message 28: by Mihir (new)

Mihir | 2 comments Ben wrote:

Thanks for clearing that up Ben, so I'll second Shadow's Sun then :)

message 29: by Pati (new)

Pati | 3 comments For me The Way of Shadows looks good, second Jhereg.

message 30: by Jessica (new)

Jessica (jessicaheartshouston) | 1 comments way of shadows ftw

message 31: by Lakisha (new)

Lakisha | 3 comments Brother to Shadows by Andre Norton

message 32: by Chris (new)

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 889 comments "Second" also means after the first. That being, once a book is seconded, further seconds of that book are reduntant, and would be called "third", "forth", etc.

message 33: by Lynn (last edited Jul 23, 2010 09:50AM) (new)

Lynn Hardy (lynnhardy) | 31 comments I'd Like to nominate The Ecologic Envoy

By L.E. Modesitt Jr. I will be conducting panels with him in two weeks. With such a large group I'm sure he'll join in the discussion.

message 34: by Ms. Nikki (new)

Ms. Nikki (miznikki) | 12 comments Tyler wrote: "I second Mistborn: The Final Empire."

I'd like to support the nominations of Mistborn and Spider's Bite by Jennifer Estep.

message 35: by GloFree (new)

GloFree | 3 comments I'll second The Ecologic Envoy by Modesitt... Having him in the discussion would be really cool Lynn!

message 36: by Bryan (new)

Bryan (blyoung) | 19 comments Not sure if these really qualify as "assassin" books, but the Fafhrd and Grey Mouser series by Fritz Leiber is amazing.

The first book is Swords and Deviltry

message 37: by [deleted user] (new)

Having already read the Mistborn, Way of Shadows, and Assassin's Apprentice trilogies, I'll go ahead and second Brother to Shadows

message 38: by Jakob (last edited Jul 23, 2010 02:11PM) (new)

Jakob | 14 comments Pyramids by Terry Pratchett. Not exactly a conventional assassin story but good nonetheless :)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pyramids_(novel)

Otherwise I second assassins apprentice.

message 39: by Cindy (new)

Cindy | -4 comments It's a newer book but I second Shadow's Son (and I'm almost 70% certain I might be able to get the author to come here for a Q&A of sorts)

message 40: by Carolyn (new)

Carolyn (seeford) | 203 comments Where are we at on books nominationed & seconded, Cindy? Seems like we're close to the cap...

message 41: by Cindy (new)

Cindy | -4 comments Yes :) Please no more nominations and seconding :) I'll have the poll up within the hour. !

message 42: by Cindy (new)

Cindy | -4 comments Ok The poll is up.

I removed Ecologic Envoy and Brothers to Shadows due to the fact that I felt they were too sci-fy for the fantasy themed month :). Though Ecologic Envoy might be good for the sci-fi author month!

message 43: by Lynn (new)

Lynn Hardy (lynnhardy) | 31 comments Oh, I didn't realize it was fantasy month... When is SF month?

message 44: by MB (What she read) (last edited Jul 26, 2010 09:26AM) (new)

MB (What she read) FYI, Poison Study is definitely a YA! And it is lightly romantic (published by MIRA). It's a great book, but not the type of thing that this group usually picks to read...

I'll second Pyramids, although it is also a fairly light book for Pratchett. However, I think the discussion would be fun--its very spoofy.

stormhawk | 418 comments Lynn wrote: "Oh, I didn't realize it was fantasy month... When is SF month?"

Every month is SciFi month ;)

(there is one fantasy novel and one scifi novel being read by this group every month.)

I couldn't find the listing for the SF reads... The last posting seems to be July.

message 47: by Candiss (new)

Candiss (tantara) Lynn wrote: "I couldn't find the listing for the SF reads... The last posting seems to be July. "

Science Fiction and Fantasy alternate month to month. One month, the group nominates and votes on a SF book, and a random selection of F books from the "Master Fantasy Book List" (in the "Monthly Book Suggestions" folder) are put up for vote in a poll. The next month, the group nominates and votes on a Fantasy book, and the SF book is voted on from a random selection from the "Master Science Fiction Book List".

The reason the last posting for SF is from July is that the last time SF was the "nominate and vote" option was July. In August, SF is the "random selection". Currently, the #3 poll in the polls list is "Random Sci-Fi for August: which book would you like to read?" It went up at the beginning of the month.

Oh, what a wonderful system... Thanks for updating the info to the newby!

message 49: by Kaion (new)

Kaion (kaionvin) | 38 comments Did I miss the announcement that we were having a runoff?

Snail in Danger (Sid) Nicolaides (upsight) | 540 comments I got a message that we were having one ... I seem to recall that there were issues a while back with not all group members getting those messages. Maybe they're back.
