What Are You Reading?
@ Kim, I loved A Thousand Splendid Suns!Right now I'm reading Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand, Les Misérables, and South by Ernest Shackleton.
Two of them are for in person book clubs, I'm starting to wonder if I'll get them finished in time!
I'm reading The Woman in White very slowly, mostly at bed time. More actively, I'm reading Doomsday Book. So far both are very interesting.
I am currently reading the Freedom Writers Diaries. I recently had the pleasure of hearing Erin Gruwell speak at an education conference and was so inspired by what she did in her classroom. Even though I teach 3rd graders who are much younger than her high schoolers, I found that I really need to be more sensitive to the lives my children lead outside the classroom. It's definitely not a book that is only for those in education, but for all people. In this world today we all need an extra dose of character education where tolerance and acceptance is the norm and not the exception.

A Thousand Spendid Suns was soooo hard to get through. I cried throughout. The mark of a really good book.
Fiona wrote: "I've re read books 1-5 about a hundred times (well maybe over a dozen times at least... first 3 more) I've read the 6th one 3 times now but I've only read DH once so I'm so excited to re-read it ag..."Oooh, Fiona, enjoy the Deathly Hallows re-read! I re-read it last year and I loved it more than the first time I read it. I guess since I was flipping through the pages like crazy the first time, I missed a few things. It moved up in ranks as my favorite Harry Potter book bumping The Goblet of Fire to the number 2 spot.
Anyway, now I'm reading Big Stone Gap by Adriana Trigiani and am really liking it so far. I was in the mood for some Southern comfort and this is definitely doing the trick.
This week's read is One Day. It's the story of two friends which is told on the same day every year or so. An interesting format. Nicholls writes well and provides an enjoyable story.
I'm reading Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows right now as well. This is my first time reading the series and I'm loving it. I started reading DH last night and got to page 63. I'm now on page 363 so I've read 300 pages of it today.
I am currently reading "Cutting for Stone" by Abraham Verghese. I'm getting ready to read "Shadow of the Wind" for the third time.
I finished Big Stone Gap and I loved it. I thought it was really great and I really identified with the main character, Ave Maria. Here's my GR review:http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...
Now I'm reading Mindhunter: Inside the FBI's Elite Serial Crime Unit by John Douglas. The psychology major in me was really looking forward to this book.
Reading Olive Kitteridge and have been for over a week. My reading got interrupted by family visits, but it was all good, now back to reading. Well, I did do some reading with my 9-yr.-old granddaughter, too. We read the first two Bunnicula books,Bunnicula: A Rabbit-Tale of Mystery and Howliday Inn, and Roald Dahl's The Magic Finger.
I've picked up two books I started reading a while ago and then put down: Inkspell by Cornelia Funke and Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand
On a quest to finish reading books I've dropped before, I picked up The Forgotten, which I'm liking very much. (Hated it and dropped it before.)
Alanna wrote: "Finished

by Stieg Larsson for my neighborhood bookclub in August."Did you enjoy The Last Child? I've wanted to read it since seeing it in Borders.
Frances wrote: "Alanna wrote: "Finished

Just finished reading James Patterson's "Private". I liked it but can't say it will ever be a favorite. His books are good for a quick read.
Okay, so even though I'm still reading Mindhunter: Inside the FBI's Elite Serial Crime Unit, Little Women, and The Body in the Library, I've decided to start Milrose Munce and the Den of Professional Help by Douglas Anthony Cooper. I'm absolutely loving it. It's just so hilarious and endearing. I'm really hoping this turns into a series.
I've been flitting among three different books: The Fight Club, Shantaram, and Sense and Sensibility! But I think I'll curl up with Sense and Sensibility comfortably. It's the only Austen book I haven't read.
I can't seem to hit it off with the other two. Has anyone else read The Fight Club and Shantaram? What did you think of them?

I read The Fight Club. It was pretty hard to get into, my friend forced it on me since he's in love with that book, but it turned out pretty good!
Chuck Palahniuk is pretty creepy. Actually, very creepy. He isn't the best writer, but the story was unusual enough to like it. (for me)
I zipped through Santa Fe Dead by Stuart Woods and the new book by Fredrick Forsyth The Cobra. Both real page turners.
I just started The Cookbook Collector by Allegra Goodman. It is kind of a modern retelling of Sense and Sensibility.
Just started Awakening by S.J. Bolton
I love this author, recently read her other two books, Sacrifice and Blood Harvest (her latest).
Just finished The Long Goodbye. (Brilliant-Sorry I haven't read him before now.)Reading The Calling
(Pretty grisly!)
Going to start Empress: A Novel today. The cover caught my attention right away, and the fact that it's based on the history of China is all the more exciting.
Finished
and loved it! Can't wait to read the next in the trilogy. I am now reading
by Jodi Picoult.
I've been reading the first three Agatha Raisin books by M.C. Beaton, now on Agatha Raisin and the Walkers of Dembley.
I am still reading Cutting For Stone and since school started this week I am sure to be reading it for awhile!
Katniss wrote: "I started The Shining a few days ago."One of his scariest, enjoy! (If that's the right word.)
Finally finished The Secret Life of Bees. I was listening to it on some recent trips. I did enjoy most of it but it was a little melodramatic in parts but maybe it was just the readers interpretation.
Vince wrote: "Katniss wrote: "I started The Shining a few days ago."One of his scariest, enjoy! (If that's the right word.)"
Thanks, Vince! I heard so much about it and it starts quite promising. .:)
While reading The Shining I'm listening to A Hat Full of Sky by Terry Pratchett - I adore them little Wee Free Men. ♥
I just finished reading a book "The Flying Carpet To Baghdad" by Hala Jaber. It was a very interesting book for reading and I really enyojed. I will be read a book "Little Women" by Louisa May Alcott and "Small island" by Andrea Levy.
About to re-start I, Claudius: From the Autobiography of Tiberius Claudius, Born 10 B.C., Murdered and Deified A.D. 54When you read, does your mood affect the impression the book leaves on you?
Nita wrote: "I've been flitting among three different books: The Fight Club, Shantaram, and Sense and Sensibility! But I think I'll curl up with Sense and Sensibility comfortably. It's the only Austen book I..."
I have read Fight Club. My reaction:
4092 Fight Club a novel, by Chuck Palahniuk (read 12 Nov 2005) I accidentally heard of this book and noted it had 519 reviews on Amazon, which is a lot, and I, stupidly, decided to read it. I knew as soon as I started it that it was junk, but I finished it. The central character starts fight clubs where there is much violence tho no one dies. It is all fantastic and boring. I think I laughed about four times in the entire reading. The book has a cult following and there is a movie. The book apparently was published in 1995. I found it an entire waste of time.
I just finished A Secret Kept
I really enjoyed this more than I thought I would. I was actually moved. Reviewed on my blog: http://wp.me/pTRJE-3Q

Oh, I've been really wanting to re-read that series! Is it just as good the second time around?
I'm reading A Thousand Splendid Suns. So heart-wrenching, but beautifully written.
