Jessica (Books: A true story) (booksatruestory) | 21 comments I've been browsing the archives and I saw lots of threads for movie nights. Is there a reason that the club stopped doing them? Because I have a very limited range in my movie taste and would like to broaden it (especially to the classics mentioned on GG). I have a hard time being interested in b&w movies, but I think it's just because I don't know anything about it so it seems boring.

Jessica, I think it stopped because there seemed to be less and less people participating? Alison knows more about this though.

Yeah--pretty much what Dini said. Jessica--if there is a movie you would like to pick for movie night, feel free to announce it in a thread. You might want to announce it now for a Sept. 1 movie night or something like that. I'm sure I would watch it (and probably others.) I can't get enough of the old movies.

Percy Pigsbottom I'd be interested in participating in this if I could get hold of the film.

Since I started trying to read some of the 'classic' books I decided it would be interesting to watch some 'classic' films as well. I didn't think I'd enjoy them, especially the b&w ones, but have been surprised. I found many to be more enjoyable and with much better writing than modern films.

Gitte (gittetofte) Sounds like fun!

A.U.C. (antoniafuc) | 12 comments I'm new to the group and I would love something like this. Sounds fun!

Adriana (good_girl_reads) | 1 comments I'm also new here and I'd be interested in a movie night too! How does it work? Does it have to be a movie mentioned in Gilmore girls? or something based on a book? Can anyone make suggestions?...

Jessica (Books: A true story) (booksatruestory) | 21 comments I was hoping the veteran movie watchers in this group could share their wisdom for us black & white virgins. If, let's say, the closest thing I've watched to a b&w movie is "The Wizard of Oz" what movies would you suggest? They can be from the GG series, but I don't think they have to.

I was just reading through the archives and whenever movies came up, I felt like the whole thing went over my head. I'm jealous! I want to watch great movies too and know what the heck everyone was talking about! I was thinking we could start with classics. Maybe Casablanca? I think that one is mentioned on GG, too.

Well, typically, we would watch a movie that might conincide with our reading. For example, for August, we might watch Anna Karenina starring Greta Garbo as Anna. But I won't finish this book 'til November! But...we could still discuss Anna Karenina or any Greta Garbo movies.

Or we could just discuss Casablanca! Love that one, too. :)

Brooke (brandell) Ooh, Ooh!(hopping up and down in my seat with my hand raised) I'm a veteran movie watcher, Jessica! Great black and white movies are the best. Like Alison said, Casablanca is definitely one of the greats; and if you want to go for Anna Karenina there's also a 1948 version with Vivien Leigh. But, here's some good black & whites just in case:
It Happened One Night
Some Like it Hot
Harvey
The Vivacious Lady
The Shop Around the Corner
The Awful Truth

Well...does anyone have a suggestion for September? We could do Greta Garbo's Anna Karenina...but I can't watch because I am reading it over the next 3 months.

We could watch The Namesake (film version) toward the end of September or for October.

Ideas??
