Both are described as horribly rude children. Why are they both so rude and what does this have to do with the adults in the book?

It's interesting to see how Hodgson writes Mary and Colin. Their speech is repetitive and the way their brains work in terms of understanding the world around them feels very childlike. I think she's done a good job within the context of the time period she wrote in.
