My Downspeak skills may be lacking, but I can't help but love it. I particularly enjoy that Bump is damn near unintelligible. As for our man Terrible, his syncopated flow suits me just fine.

Which character's flavor of Downspeak is your favorite? Particular phrases you dig?

message 2: by Anilú (new)

Anilú (anilumagloire) | 50 comments He's no Terrible but I like the way Lex speaks the best. Bump is just too funny! I love to hate him.

Chelsea I am cracking up because you are so right about Bump! Whenever I read his dialogue, I can't understand it. I have to reread his lines several times. lol

Terrible's Downspeak is my favorite (big shocker). I love it when he figures stuff out and tell Chess, and then Chess has to figure out what he means. LOL!

message 4: by Jillian (new)

Jillian | 7 comments After reading the books I have the urge to add dig to the end of questions. Anyone else find themselves with a similar problem?

message 5: by Jackie (new)

Jackie Uhrmacher | 13 comments Jillian - I do it at work. : ) Nothing like meeting with a planner and saying, "Now that we gots the knowledge, we can move on, dig?"

message 6: by Big-d (new)

Big-d | 3 comments I think of Bump and have this image of a lighter version of Snoop Dog a la Huggy Bear in the remake of Starsky and Hutch :)

message 7: by Fiendishly (new)

Fiendishly Bookish (fiendishlybookish) | 1 comments Aye Jillian, I gots that problem too. I found myself tweeting about the book and adding a "dig and an aye" a and it came so naturally!

Joanne (needsun) | 8 comments Oh my gosh. I finished listening to the book last night and the reader did it justice. I had to see how the jargon read so I downloaded the first 5 chapters from Stacia's site. No addict here. I may just have to buy this series.

You have to hear Terrible saying aye...sigh/swoon.

Oh, that's one audio book I might HAVE to get! On Stacia's site, you say?

message 11: by Kindlelicious (new)

Kindlelicious | 5 comments Oh! I might have to get that too! I would love to hear it out loud!

message 12: by debra (new)

debra (talieson) | 7 comments Terrible's Downspeak is my favourite, what a surprise :P Even if I wasn't in lurve with the man, I find his speech both easy to understand and plenty unique enough to fascinate me. Favourite phrases - the obvious 'true thing', 'aye' and my personal favourite 'louden up'(telling a heckler to speak up so he can choke him harder for insulting Chess :D )

Bump cracks me up and Lex is sometimes hardest for me to understand but I love 'em all.

message 13: by Shannon (new)

Shannon (craftycatreads) | 4 comments I really have to stop myself from saying 'aye'. Terrible is my favorite (of course! :) but I love it when Bump is talking, totally hilarious!

message 14: by Joanne (new)

Joanne (needsun) | 8 comments You can get the link for the first 5 chapters in pdf format http://www.staciakane.net/books/unhol... about 1/2 way down the site.

I got the audio book from my library.

Lex is sort of sweet...lol

Kindlelicious | 5 comments When I was stalking...ahem reading Stacia Kane's blog, I saw that she mentioned the next book will be more Lex-centric. Not sure what that means for Chessiebomb, but I am sure it will have me crying the whole time...again.

message 16: by Chelsea (new)

Chelsea (vampirebookclub) | 52 comments Mod
We can't expect Stacia not to throw a wrench into the Chess/Terrible relationship. I'd bet we'll get to see more of the Slobag territory, which isn't a bad thing....as long as Terrible can come along. ;)

More Lex-centric? No! We can't have that!!! Anilú wrote: "Kindlelicious wrote: "When I was stalking...ahem reading Stacia Kane's blog, I saw that she mentioned the next book will be more Lex-centric. Not sure what that means for Chessiebomb, but I am sur..."

message 19: by Anilú (new)

Anilú (anilumagloire) | 50 comments Don;t get me wrong... Lex is a hottie and all, but let's face it, he's no Terrible.

message 20: by Big-d (new)

Big-d | 3 comments I'm good with the Lex angle, I mean, more Terrible might mean a parting of ways with Chess.

message 21: by Chelsea (new)

Chelsea (vampirebookclub) | 52 comments Mod
I don't think more Lex in the future necessarily equates to less Terrible. She might like throwing in gamechangers, but that would be downright cruel.

message 22: by Michelle (new)

Michelle | 8 comments I agree that more Lex would be OK. Maybe Chess and Terrible are so deliriously happy together that there is nothing to write about (beyond love scenes). So Lex has to pick up the conflict.

Chess and Terrible will be deliriously happy in my head until the next book comes out, anyway.

message 23: by Chelsea (new)

Chelsea (vampirebookclub) | 52 comments Mod
Yes, Michelle, in our heads he is always calling her Chessiebomb. ;)

message 24: by Tori (new)

Tori (smexys_sidekick) | 21 comments I'd like to see more of Lex-but not in a relationship with Chess. I think they'll stay friends of sorts because of all they have been through. Will make for some serious jealousy fights between Chess and Terrible but we know what that leads to. Yummy make up time. :)

message 25: by Anilú (new)

Anilú (anilumagloire) | 50 comments "Chess and Terrible will be deliriously happy in my head until the next book comes out, anyway."

Yes!! I will think of nothing but that too :)

message 26: by Jackie (new)

Jackie Uhrmacher | 13 comments You can tell Lex really cares for her. I can see him purposefully flirting just to get under Terrible's skin.

message 27: by Anilú (new)

Anilú (anilumagloire) | 50 comments I think so too. Lex cares for Chess more than she thinks and I bet that's what book 4 will bring...

message 28: by Diana (new)

Diana | 20 comments Actually...
I don't much care for Downspeak. At least, not from Terrible, who apparently reads everything that doesn't run away fast enough. I can tolerate it from Bump (who I can't stand), Lex (who we don't have any educational background on), or any of the other Downside characters. But Terrible goes out of his way to educate himself, and he does so by *reading*. It's therefore (in my not so humble opinion) *completely* unrealistic that he not be able to speak intelligibly.

Now, I can see him speaking in dialect while he's working, and that wouldn't bother me at all. Frankly, I think it would be ludicrous for him to speak in an educated manner around his colleagues. It wouldn't bother me if he slipped up while speaking more formally into a more casual speech. But there are a couple of references to Terrible being embarrassed about his *inability* to speak properly, and I find that a little difficult to believe.

message 29: by Marie (new)

Marie Ivarsson (MarieIvarsson) | 6 comments It's been a while since I read the books (need to re-read!), so I almost forgot how much Downspeech was part of why I loved the books! I love language, and I love words, and reading the dialog in the books was just delightful. :-) And just like all of you, it kept sneaking into my own language.

message 30: by Yod (new)

Yod | 10 comments i like downspeak. it is cultural and it identifies where one is from. i can imagine in downside knowing who your neighbor is can be very important.

also, because downspeak flows kind of like lousiana patois
does. it has an economy of words that conveys as much or more than conventional english.

dialect does not necessarily indicate one being uneducated. those words educated uneducated what do they mean anyway. There is no way someone can live a full life and not be "educated".

we place importance on certain skills we associate with one being educated. these guys that run scams on folks may not have a harvard education but they are educated in the ways of the "con". getting, otherwise, smart folks to dump money into some type of scheme.

terrible is most definitely educated in the ways of survival, business dealings, contract negotiations and making love, to name a few. who would you want with you in a life threatening situation bill gates or terrible?

there is a rhythmic quality to downspeak that is very appealing to me.

message 31: by Yodamom (new)

Yodamom I got them in Audio version, Bump is so funny, the narrator does an excellent job reading him, the texture of the voice is perfect. The other characters as well, terrible sounds-tough/sexy/sad. i read the books before I listened to them and the audio version IMHO is way better.

message 32: by Chelsea (new)

Chelsea (vampirebookclub) | 52 comments Mod
I really need to listen to the audio versions. I'd love to HEAR the nuances between the various Downside dialects.

message 36: by Marina (new)

Marina (marina_roumpi) | 8 comments I find it EXTREMELY difficult to me to understand the Downside dialects, in the first book it gave me headaches and I had to stop reading or re-read each paragraph over and over again.

English isn't my native language but I have read a great deal of books almost 150 in English so it was quite a surprise for me to find it so difficult to understand WTF they were saying, especially Bimp he is the worst of them all.

message 37: by Cindyg (new)

Cindyg (brotherlover) | 29 comments You're not alone Marina...the same happened to me but I hung in there and were greatly rewarded. My understanding got better and better with each book.

Deff it gets easier, but the fist one was too much for me, when I start a series I do not stop until I have read all the books no matter how many of them.

When I finished unholy ghosts I stopped for almost a week......which is practically a mission impossible for me.........

message 39: by Yodamom (new)

Yodamom From Stacia"s FB Page- It's up, everyone! HOME, the Downside short I originally wrote for THE MAMMOTH BOOK OF GHOST ROMANCE (but pulled), is up for free at HeroesandHeartbreakers.com! (registration required) It's a *romance* story, definitely, so a bit of a different tone, but I had fun writing it and hope you like reading it.

It'll only be there for a week and then will be pulled until its "official" publication date, so register now!

message 40: by Nikki (new)

Nikki | 3 comments I just wanted to say that I love downspeak! I think it gives another great layer to the characters and shows the difference between their "worlds."
My favorite downspeaker is, naturally, Terrible. And though I may love the "Chessiebomb" nickname, I *love, love* Lex's "Tulip" and the story behind it. :Hangs head in shame: Sorry.
And on the topic of the audio books, they are amazingly fun to listen to! The narrator that I listened to gave them each their own little accents and I just really, really enjoyed them.

message 43: by Yodamom (new)

Yodamom I had only listened to the audio except for her shorts- you really need to try them the narrator is fabulous !\

Marcia (marcygold) I have listened to the four audio books so far and the narrator, Bahni Turpin, is amazing! I love the way she voices all of the characters, but my favorite is Bump. totally dead on hilarious. the audio versions are so good, I got them from the library.

Theres a group called The Urban fixation here and one of the mods created a book 6 thread. Stacia answered all her downside questions. I think you all should take looksee.

Jennifer (sadstrumpetjenny) Sooo glad there are more Downside books coming BUT...

I am not the hugest fan of the Terrible POVs *ducks* I just love him the way he is, no internal explanations needed!

Yes, I know I am crazy. Who would say no to Terrible?
