I love Scifi and I love romance so this group is perfect for me. Live in Brisbane Australia and work as a midwife. Big Linnea Sinclair fan and always looking for more authors in the Scifi romance genre. Feel free to PM or friend me!

Oh, Australia! One of my favorite book settings. Always hoped to visit there. Have you visited The Galaxy Express blog? They have a 100 "must read" list, plus the nav bar on the left is a list of SFR authors by year. Also SFR Brigade is ramping up to let readers know about SFR. :-) (love Linnea's books, too. are you on her email list? yahoo list?)

message 5: by Carolyn F. (new)

Carolyn F. I've been a sci-fi reader since the 1970s - yikes! - with Ray Bradbury. I live in California and am a legal secretary (I'm old enough that secretary isn't a bad word - now everyone's an "assistant"). I'm married with two daughters. And my hero is my grandmother (LOL). :D

message 6: by Pauline (new)

Pauline (paulinebairdjones) | 345 comments We have lived long and prospered, Carolyn. lol!

message 7: by Jacqueline J (new)

Jacqueline J | 154 comments I am a long time sci fi reader (since the early 70s). I started out with Andre Norton (some of those have some great romances in them) and moved on from there. My favorite sci fi author is CJ Cherryh. Then I discovered romances. Imagine my delight when the local library started having a spinning rack with used Harlequins on it. (late 70s) Whoopee. It wasn't long before I dreamt of a marriage between the two.

My favorite sci fi and sci fi romances are set on space ships with either merchants or soldiers. Love the whole merchant families travelling the stars. Love me some grunts in mech suits shooting up lizards. I love a HEA.

I am happily married and had my two boys at 37 and 39 so I'm pretending that I'm not nearly 50 since my kids are still in grade school. :-) I work part time in a bookstore and own/run a wool processing mill with my sister. We live on some acreage with horses, sheep, alpacas, dogs and cats near Kansas City Missouri, USA.

message 8: by Carolyn F. (new)

Carolyn F. Working in a bookstore is my dream job.

message 9: by Mandapanda (new)

Mandapanda | 86 comments thanks Pauline, I'll check out the must read list! :)

I love it. Don't know why I wasted so many years in the corporate world. I started at the bookstore when my boys were babies so I could work when my hubby was at home and vice versa. I love getting to see all the new books.

message 11: by Carolyn F. (new)

Carolyn F. Someday hopefully my husband will make enough where I could do this or I win the lottery. Either way.

message 12: by new_user (new)

new_user | 755 comments Carolyn, it's so awesome that your hero is your grandmother. :)

"Love me some grunts in mech suits shooting up lizards. I love a HEA."

You said it! I do too. That's really interesting that you have a wool mill. I figured they were all owned by corps by now, LOL. Bookstore job is a dream though. <3

AnnaM (annamc) | 1111 comments Hi! I'm Anna, unpublished author of SFR, ex-military, married, and living in the mid-west US. I've always loved SF. My dream job would be to be a published author writing and selling enough books to at least pay the bills. LOL.

I'd really love to have one of my books made into a movie. :-)

message 14: by Mandapanda (new)

Mandapanda | 86 comments Anna C wrote: I'd really love to have one of my books made into a movie. :-)

LOL That's a great goal Anna C! Who do you see playing the H/h?:)

message 15: by AnnaM (new)

AnnaM (annamc) | 1111 comments @Mandy,

Depends on the book. LOL.

One pairs Stacey Scowley and Russell Crowe (looking like he did in Gladiator)

Another is Joe Flanigan and a combo of pictures of women similar to Sophie Marceau.

The other novels I've started I haven't found actors/actresses just yet. The story with Joe playing the lead is the main romance in a series that focues on different couples but begins and ends with the first pair.

message 16: by Mandapanda (new)

Mandapanda | 86 comments I love Russell Crowe. Joe Flanigan is the guy from Starget Atlantis isn't he. Very cute. Do you have any stuff on line or in your profile? It would be great to read a snippet before you become a famous author!:)

message 17: by AnnaM (new)

AnnaM (annamc) | 1111 comments Yes, that's Joe. No, nothing online yet. Sorry. :-) I don't think anything is to that point yet.

But I will let everyone know should I ever get published. :-D

message 18: by Chaeya (new)

Chaeya | 31 comments Hello, my name is Chaeya and I'm both a reader and a writer. I started reading sci-fi/fantasy back in the 70s and my first book was Childhood's End. I have always preferred sci-fi with a romantic edge to it. My first book, Srae Iss-Ka-Mala, is due out next month. Being that I know so many authors, I've been reading mostly people I know lately. It's good to know that there is more and more sci-fi romance becoming available.

Carolyn, I'm a legal secretary and I'm in Orange County California.

The problem I have with that is you'd have to really get someone who wants to stay true to your book. Many times, because of time constraints, the book gets changed or key elements get left out. But if someone wanted to make my book into a movie, I don't think I'd say "no." LOL.

Chaeya

new_user | 755 comments I'm always happy to see SFR movies, so I'm all for it! :)

message 21: by Sandra (new)

Sandra Stixrude | 36 comments You know, I just barged in and never introduced myself. Gods, how rude is that? I write under two names, but my SF work gets my real, given name. Currently in the middle of getting the Anchorage Series published - two books out of seven already released, the third coming next week!

I've been a reader of SF for a long, long time. And Jacqueline, Andre Norton was my first, too. Imagine my joy when I found out "Andre" was a woman. I came to Romance late in life, having grown up with too many people who labeled it 'junk' (of course, they called my SF junk, too, and I often read in secret) but I find a lovely satisfaction in a good romance, a well written one.

HEA? I prefer them. There had better be a damn good dramatic reason if you're not going to have one.

message 22: by new_user (new)

new_user | 755 comments Whoops, I just realized, I should say a little something about myself.

I don't like time travel, but I love an HEA and action. I love to laugh and think, even in my entertainment. Fantasy is my first love, but I also enjoy scifi and romance, duh! ;)

message 23: by AnnaM (new)

AnnaM (annamc) | 1111 comments I don't mind some time travel stories, even have an SF time travel in the works.

I don't require a HEA or HFN but I really like them. What I definitely DON'T want is an UNhappy ending. I hate stories where the dog or the true love dies, particularly if it's for no good reason.

I can't read Old Yeller, Where the Red Fern Grows, or watch I am Legend ever again.

I also came to Romance late. I started reading SF at about 7 or 8, since I could read adult paperbacks at that age. Dad watched Star Trek so I think I first heard that show in the womb. LOL.

message 26: by Sparkle (new)

Sparkle (sparkle00) | 13 comments Hi I just found your group after reading Kenyon's League series, I LOVED this series, I've been moving through all types of romance books. I've been into PNR for the last year and didn't get around to Sci Fi romance until League series. Now I need more.

Has anyone read Psy/changeling series by Nalini singh? Those were good books, futuristic.

message 27: by Mandapanda (new)

Mandapanda | 86 comments Yeah I love the Psy/changeling series. Wasn't too impressed with the last one Bonds of Justice though!

message 28: by new_user (new)

new_user | 755 comments Welcome to the group, Sparkle! I love the Psy-Changeling series! <3

message 29: by Sparkle (new)

Sparkle (sparkle00) | 13 comments Thank you for the welcome.

Yes, those PNRs are good too. I just got done Highlander series by Karen Marie Moning and I wonder if that's also a bit Sci Fi ish.

Is time travel considered Sci Fi?

message 30: by Mandapanda (last edited Aug 15, 2010 01:27PM) (new)

Mandapanda | 86 comments It's difficult to define exactly what is a scfi romance and I think it's always going to be a personal choice to some extent. But IMHO I don't think all time travel stories can be regarded as Scifi. A lot of the time it is an effective plot device used by the author to put a present day heroine into an historical setting. The tone of KMM's highlander books (it's been a while since I read them so I could be wrong!) is more like historical fantasy or historical paranormal. It's a really interesting topic Sparkle! :)

message 31: by Sparkle (last edited Aug 15, 2010 01:54PM) (new)

Sparkle (sparkle00) | 13 comments Mandy,
You are absolutely right. It does read more like a historical fantasy. I did enjoy them very much though, since I like historical romance as well.

What other Sci Fi romance does everyone on this forum recommmend? As I said I LOVED the League series.

message 32: by AnnaM (new)

AnnaM (annamc) | 1111 comments I think if the story has a lot of the normal SF trappings or tech and time travel too, then it would count. But if the time travel or fantasy things happen without further SF trappings then it's *probably* not SFR.

Sparkle give me a couple of minutes I'm going to start a new thread on the "Let's Get Specific" thread about recommendations or "where to start" for new to SFR readers. Come and check it out!

NebulousGloom (FK) (nebulousgloom) | 30 comments Hi! I'm Felicia, and I live in Oregon. I'm new-ish to SFR, as I only discovered it this spring. However, I've made good time plowing through everything my library has in the genre. I'm actually quite fussy, though, as I only like sci-fi romance and not fantasy or vampire stories at all. I don't do time travel romance either. (This isn't to put down vampire fans. It just doesn't do it for me.) I'm a big fan of a happy ending, as I could get plenty of misery by just listening to the news. At the moment, my favorite SFR author is Linnea Sinclair. I'm quite excited to see what your recommendations are (as I've gone through just about every source I could find already). -- Felicia

message 37: by new_user (new)

new_user | 755 comments Welcome to the group, Felicia! I hope we can help you find more great titles. Sinclair is great!

message 38: by Laurie (new)

Laurie Green (laurieagreen) | 146 comments Hi, I'm Laurie. I write SFR and I try to be a cheerleader for the subgenre at every opportunity. I'm currently marketing one novel and finishing a second. Both are doing quite well on the contest circuit (all part of my plot to get them in front of certain agents and editors. mwahaha)

I work for the military and live on a small ranch in the New Mexico hinterlands. (I joke how I have more Herefords than people as neighbors....except it's not a joke.)

Yup, I've been reading SF since the 70s too. I read most of the classics in my teens, before I went into my romance phase in my 20s, and then started wondering why the two genres couldn't be combined. I think Dragonriders of Pern was my first realization that, hey! Maybe they can!

message 39: by new_user (new)

new_user | 755 comments Hey, Laurie! Good to have you! Take a look around, join topics or start one, make yourself comfortable! :)

Mandapanda | 86 comments Hi Laurie, Great to meet more SFR authors! Hope to see your books published soon. :)

message 41: by Michelle (new)

Michelle Gilmore Hi! My name is Michelle, and I love science fiction movies and novels. My favorite science fiction series to date is Nalini Singh's Psy-Changeling series.

message 42: by new_user (last edited Aug 20, 2010 11:56PM) (new)

new_user | 755 comments Welcome, Michelle! That is such a great series! I love the Psy and their "network" of minds. I like the way she explores conditioning too with Silencing emotion.

message 43: by Michelle (new)

Michelle Gilmore Thanks NU! I've taken a break from that series for no reason other than I don't want it to end! I know it sounds silly. I plan to get some serious reading done this weekend while sitting on the couch all day, with the syfy channel on for background noise.

message 44: by new_user (new)

new_user | 755 comments That doesn't sound silly at all, especially if you're like me and after you've read a good book, you want to know where the sequel is! LOL. Sounds like you're in for a nice, relaxing weekend. ;)

message 45: by Catherine (new)

Catherine Hi, I'm Catherine. I've only read a few Sci-Fi Romances, but I've found them interesting. I'm always in the mood to try something new.

Welcome, Stacia!
