Whenever I hear the song "Hit Me" by The Sounds, I think of Chess. (This was before I read City of Ghosts and found out just how right I was about it being Chess' song.)
One that I've been listening to lately that seems captures the whole Chess/Terrible separation is Need You Now by Lady Antebellum.

You are so right! I love that song and I can totally see Chess being high from her Cepts and calling Terrible to say "Need You Now" lol

OMG I can listen to so many different songs and picture Chess & Terrible. "Wicked Game" for after Terrible finds her with Lex. "I Never Told You" by Colbie Caillat. "Crazy for You" by Madonna. The list goes on and on. On my 3 hour drive home I heard so many I could picture about Terrible & Chess...
Into Alone by Dreamtrybe (and since most of you probably haven't heard it...)"Going back to where the memories are (Buried in the snow)
Help me (Can I go)
Into the know just talk about the road conditions and the weather (Never!)
Bring up long ago (It hurts, too, I should know...)
Gathered round the table cracking smiles through the ice (well I can't ignore)
Help me (find the door)
Back to the child she was innocent (you know, I remember making angels in the snow)
My angel (she melted long ago)
Where is your voice of reason?
I don't want to go home....
To live on a cracked foundation
of a life I had known
You have changed me....into alone
You have changed me....into alone
I've got the mark of your design (you have the gift of my heart opened)
Stealing (every key)
Don't ride the mine (Don't you realise you asked for this) memory....
I have been, (my past and future lives)
Now you have (killed me twice)
Where is your voice of reason?
I don't want to go home....
To live on a cracked foundation
of a life I had known
Where is your voice of reason?
I don't want to go home....
To live on a cracked foundation
of a life I had known
You have changed me....into alone
You have changed me....into alone
You have changed me....into alone"
I could see Stacia Kane working The Ramones' 'The KKK Took My Baby Away" in. Imagine that song early on in City of Ghosts...
(I might love '70s punk. Clash and Ramones are on my normal playlists.)
Hear the aforementioned Ramones' track: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p-4EZy...
Also, I realized lots of people don't listen to The Sounds, so here's a link to hear the "Hit Me" song I mentioned before (the second verse especially reminds me of Chess):

So this song is not mentioned nor is it even remotely punk but whenever I hear Terrible Fever...I start hearing Peggy Lee's Fever in my head. :D Especially these lines:
Never know how much I love you
Never know how much I care
When you put your arms around me
I get a fever that's so hard to bear
You give me fever (you give me fever) when you kiss me
Fever when you hold me tight (you give me fever)
Fever ... in the mornin'
Fever all through the night
Sun lights up the day time
Moon lights up the night
I light up when you call my name
'cause I know you're gonna treat me right
You give me fever (you give me fever) when you kiss me
Fever when you hold me tight (you give me fever)
Also from DreamTryBe (and also off the same album "as Into Alone"), we have Hades:"Is anybody even there
For me
To hold on to
Oh Hades
You're pulling me too hard
Pulling me under
My veil
Is at it's thinnest
The fabric of my being ripped to shreds
November, tell me I'm not dead
Tell me I'm not dead"
When Chess is depressed about her life and the situation with Terrible, I would somehow work in "Perfect Blue Buildings" by the Counting Crows. Not really the harder stuff that is mentioned in the books, but lines like, "I want to get me a little oblivion, baby/ Try to keep myself away from me" would work perfectly :)
I have two songs that come to mind...For Chess: Someday by Crossfade
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0kj9kR...
For Angry Terrible: You Make Me Sick by Egypt Central
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CGXjb2...
Neither are punk enough for 'em but the lyrics and mood of both songs match them perfectly for me...
Well when I read Unholy Ghosts - I dubbed Ruff Neck by McLyte as Terrible's song. LoL check it out http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ygteZW...
The Song "Ghost Town Blues" could definitely be Terrible's theme song, esp from Unholy Magic. And I always picture Terrible looking like Mike Ness (the lead singer) anyway.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=24gVxu...
Ever since my baby left me
You know this ghost town ain't no fun no more
She stole my heart away from me
And then she dropped it on the floor
My outside's tough, hellbent leather
Overcoat of what was once a man
But inside's a little broken hearted boy
Whose feelings he cannot stand.
chorus:
I've got these ghost town blues
With nothing left to lose
The noose swings high up on the
Gallows in the wind
I've got these ghost town blues
I feel like an undertaker dressed in black
But no one left for dead
She left me in a heartbeat
And now there's no one left to sleep in my bed
Where laughs and cries and memories were once
Now lie and tumbleweeds and dust
And an empty graveyard feeling that began
Once just as a childhood lust
chorus:
I've got these ghost town blues
With nothing left to lose
The noose swings high up on the
Gallows in the wind
I've got these ghost town blues
My pontiac spit back feelings of
Contempt out the exhaust
A hundred miles an hour down a highway.
Well I'm beat up and I'm lost
She's gone and I know it,
Like an outlaw she ran for the hills
And I'll start a brand new life
With a new girl
And these same old ghost town thrills.
chorus:
I've got these ghost town blues
With nothing left to lose
The noose swings high up on the
Gallows in the wind
I've got these ghost town blues.
The Distillers "Dismantle Me" and "Love is Paranoid" fit perfectly on how Chess feels about Terrible when she finally accepts to herself she loves him and how she fucked up with Lex but won't give up fighting to win Terrible back. Also "Coral Fang" reminds me of her addiction. "Dismantle Me"
I fancy you but I've been destitute
And all I know dissolved,
I could never re-undo you
I will always say it's so,
I will always speak the truth
Descend into a noose,
I could never re-undo you
I want to bury you (x2)
Vultures circle around
Feathers float, wings flap, beaks pound
And though my heart's exposed
I could never re-undo you
I will always bleed the truth
I will always speak it new
I was sent to cut you loose
I will never re-undo you
I want to bury you (4)
Dismantle me (x4)
And Its warm and humid on Swanston Street
And the air is filled with electricity
And the sky is deeper than a dream
And the sky is deeper than a
Dismantle me (x3)
And the sky is deeper than a dream (x3)
"A Hundred Kisses" from She Wants Revenge! It's a song that says exactly what Terrible could say to Chess. You gotta listen to it! Here are the lirycs: Shake off the rain
And dry off and come inside tonight
You don't have to be alone (x2)
You've got the prettiest face I ever did see
With eyes inside like songs I swear I've known.
And I hope to god
That you're not pretending
Cause if you are
I swear I don't know what I'm going to do
But I promise you that I'll be good to you
If you promise that you'll try to love me too
Somehow
I'd steal a hundred kisses
Before you say goodbye
And make a hundred wishes
In the name of you and I
Cause what we have is secret
So don't let no one know
The past can't come between us
If we both just let it go
Today is the perfect day
Today is the day I tell you
If you ever walk away
Then I would die right there
For you
Give me your every breath
And promise me your world
I don't ask for much at all
All I want is all you've got
Could you be that girl
While you're thinking of me
Or have I project all of my hopes on you?
And I know there'll be nights filled with tears
I know there'll be fights and fears
But that's a part of it too
So do you think I have the slightest chance to be
Everything to you
Cause you mean everything to me
I'd steal a hundred kisses
Before you say goodbye
And make a hundred wishes
In the name of you and I
Cause what we have is secret
So don't let no one know
The past can't come between us
If we both just let it go
Today is the perfect day
Today is the day I tell you
If you ever walk away
Then I would die right there
For you
For you
Aren't they? It's one of my favorite songs from that band but hadn't heard it in a long time so the other day when I sang it in a fun karaoke night with friends it just brought Terrible and Chess to mind! And I just had to share this with my fellow Downside fans! :)
I tried to listen to all the links listed, couldn't do it. I liked all the lyrics and although I enjoy all genres of music EXCEPT punk and about 90% of rap. I'll just have to appreciate the written words (LOL)
I was recently listening to 'New' by Daya while I was re-reading the first four books of the series, and was struck by how well this song sums up Chess' pendulum relationship between Lex and Terrrible in the early part of the series. It is especially poignant in the face of Terrible's initial rejection and her resulting surrender to Lex. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9yfMp...What do people think?

The song "Who's Gonna Drive You Home" by The Cars reminds me of Terrible and Chess' relationship. She is always in his car and it seems like he could ask her the title of the song as a question. Terrible has been there for her so many times and gotten her out of some tough spots. He's always the one to drive her home as well.
