Anything and everything about 'Un Lun Dun' not covered in any of the other threads? Here's the place to unload 'em.

Okay, this came up in another thread, but because THIS HAS SPOILERS, I'm putting it here. I felt that the entire reason for the over- and random usage of slang in the beginning was so that we wouldn't be surprised when Deeba came up with slang words to use against the Speaker.
That makes sense, Jesi, though, that being the case, it still would've been nice if it was a bit more consistent.
What about creepy moments? I definitely think this book has its fair share. The illustrations added to that creep factor too. The carnivorous giraffes and Mr. Speaker and his minions were really eerie to me.
I haven't read any of his other works, so I can't comment on that.I'm curious, though - by vernacular problem do you mean the occassional British vs. American words, or do you mean the girls' heavy usage of slang towards the beginning? I'd assumed you meant the latter, but now I'm not sure.
