Come tell other group members about yourself! I'll go first :)

My name is Jana, and I'm 23. I graduated from Utah Valley University with my Bachelor's degree in graphic design last year. I also sing! I love shopping, watching movies, designing jewelry, photography, interior decorating, bowling, and traveling. I write for a book review blog called The Broke and the Bookish at http://brokeandbookish.blogspot.com/. Currently, I work in an elementary school and tutor reading, teach phonics and spelling to various grade levels, and work in Kindergarten!

I love reading SO much. My favorite authors include Mary Higgins-Clark, Lynn Kurland, Maggie Stiefvater, and Suzanne Collins.

The best pirate book I ever read was Charm School by Susan Wiggs. I loved that! I just bought a used copy of The Windflower by Sharon and Tom Curtis for $25. I've heard its the best pirate book in the world! Hope it is! As far as pirate romances go, I enjoy the tamer ones. I have a hard time reading the more graphic ones.

Your turn!

$25 for The Windflower = not bad... I had to pay $40!!

It's on my TBR list.. can't wait to read it!

Jana at ThatArtsyReaderGirl.com (miss_jana) | 89 comments Mod
SmittenKitten, did you enjoy it enough to be ok with paying that much? lol. I always worry I'll hate a book I spent a bunch of money on

Joeera, thanks for your intro! I love kids too!

message 5: by SmittenKitten (last edited Sep 27, 2010 01:43PM) (new)

SmittenKitten | 129 comments Well, I haven't read The Windflower yet... but I did spend about $40 on The Silver Devil, which I rated 4 stars. If a book is a must-read (especially if it is iconic & often mentioned/discussed), then I don't mind paying the big bucks to read it.

Sandi *~The Pirate Wench~* (thepiratewench) | 551 comments Mod
What makes me mad is I bought those "hard to find" now asking$$$$ for the 2 or 3 dollar price new..& lent them out & never got them back. :( so now looking for those old friends to re-read but my limit is $20.00..I think..

@Joeera..welcome (even though weve been yaking already) did you read Barbara Taylor Bradfords "woman of Subtance series? or her new one?

message 7: by Joeera (last edited Sep 28, 2010 01:51PM) (new)

Sandi *~The Pirate Wench~* (thepiratewench) | 551 comments Mod

Rima Jean (thefictionchick) | 7 comments Wow. I am speechless with joy. :) I was invited to join this group by Sandi, and what a wonderful surprise! I am an amateur "pirate historian," and know WAAAAAAAY too much about pirates of the Golden Age. I decided to write a novel based on what I knew - a novel that was as historically accurate as possible. I wrote The Noble Pirates as an online serial, and was surprised to find that people loved it.

The Noble Pirates by R.L. Jean

I would LOVE to hear good pirate novel recommendations from you, as I have not read very many good ones! I look forward to getting to know you all!!

Sandi *~The Pirate Wench~* (thepiratewench) | 551 comments Mod
Welcome R.L.!! I knew you were the person to invite to this group! And anybody here who Loves pirates check out R.L.'s online book!

Sandi *~The Pirate Wench~* (thepiratewench) | 551 comments Mod
I was just reading some of the chapters on your blog...oh please come out in book form!! otherwise I just might have to get a kindle...are you working on book 2?

message 12: by Rima (new)

Rima Jean (thefictionchick) | 7 comments Sandi - yes, I am working on Book 2 and simultaneously trying to get Book 1 published in print. *Crossing fingers*

Sandi *~The Pirate Wench~* (thepiratewench) | 551 comments Mod
*fingers & toes* you deserve it! Ive loved what Ive read so far..you have a great sense of humor! :)

Jana at ThatArtsyReaderGirl.com (miss_jana) | 89 comments Mod
Welcome, R.L.! I'm so glad you joined! Your book looks interesting! I have a hard time reading books on the computer because of my eyes (I spend a lot of time on the computer designing things, so I deal with a lot of eye strain.) Hopefully it'll be published in print! I'd love to read it!

message 15: by Rima (new)

Rima Jean (thefictionchick) | 7 comments Jana - Yeah, I don't like reading on the computer either. :( When I first started posting TNP as a serial online, I was certain no one would read it, because I assumed everyone was like me -- they preferred reading a real book.

Hopefully it will be in print soon...

Sandi *~The Pirate Wench~* (thepiratewench) | 551 comments Mod
Let us all know here R.L. can hardly wait! :)

Verity | 55 comments I've been looking for The windflower for ages & nevah found it.

I bought Silver Devil for $ 13 & felt gypped 'cuz it's awful so I donated it to an Amazon poster. Hated the cweepy hero & the writing was so dry, it's like applying Pro-active solution, my skin almost peeled =^2

Sandi *~The Pirate Wench~* (thepiratewench) | 551 comments Mod
The Silver Devil by Teresa Denys is this the book you mean? its on my wish list..maybe I should pass?

Sandi *~The Pirate Wench~* (thepiratewench) | 551 comments Mod
Oh and welcome aboard Verity! ( excuse the pun) :D

Jana at ThatArtsyReaderGirl.com (miss_jana) | 89 comments Mod
Verity, I just bought a used copy of The Windflower a few months ago from an Amazon merchant for $20. I have not been able to read it, but used is the only way to go. I've never seen it cheaper than $20. Good luck finding it!

message 21: by Verity (last edited Feb 18, 2011 11:33PM) (new)

Verity | 55 comments Thanx for the welcome, Sandi. Yeah that's it ! I usually luv reading shipwrecks in all genres & gamma heroes are my cuppa but SD hero is just plain cweepy. I posted a long spoilerish rant on Ami thread & offered the book as freebie. Someone took the bait w/in minutes LOL... Methiniks U should read it just to see what the fuzz is all 'bout. I'm a big believer of "someone else's trash is my treasure". There's no accounting for taste. Lotsa peeps luv SD to pieces so who knows, it may turn out to be a DIK for you haha

Jana,
Thanx for the tips. Nowadays I don't buy if it costs over $ 15 hehe... The priciest book I've evah bought was Mary Balogh = $ 25 + S/H on ebay. Some Judith Ivory / Judy Cuevas also cost more but they're worth every penny. I'm still crossing my toes & fingers someday The Windflower might end up in local library =^P

There's a book that became famous from word-of-mouth (Stormfire) & I only had to pay shipping cost thanx to a verra kind Ami poster who loans it out for free.

message 22: by SmittenKitten (new)

SmittenKitten | 129 comments @Verity - I agree that The Silver Devil was dry. It took me MONTHS to finish it! However, after I let the story marinate, I ended up appreciating it in hindsight.

@Jana - are you going to join us in the Buddy Read for The Windflower in march? :)

I own multiple copies of The Windflower... I paid the big bucks for my first copy (hardcover) and then a few months later, ended up finding the hardcover in a thrift store for $2 and the paperback online for $5. I wish I had just been patient!!

Jana at ThatArtsyReaderGirl.com (miss_jana) | 89 comments Mod
Such a die-hard, Verity! Here's to hoping you and The Windflower cross paths soon!

SmittenKitten, I'm totally joining in on the March group read! It kills me to hear the great deals you got on it! I should have been patient too, I guess, but I figured it would just get more and more expensive as time went on. Drat! :P

message 24: by SmittenKitten (new)

SmittenKitten | 129 comments @Jana - Well, I still ended up having to pay a lot for my first copy of it, but at least now I have an extra copy to lend to my dad. We read & discuss a few books together each year, but since I've been on a romance kick, I've had nothing to read with him... I'm thinking that The Windflower will be less smutty, so maybe he can handle it. LOL.

Jana at ThatArtsyReaderGirl.com (miss_jana) | 89 comments Mod
lol. I'm hoping it's less smutty! I have a hard time with the really risque ones!

message 26: by Angela (new)

Angela Claire | 5 comments Hi - I'm Agela Claire. I have always loved pirate romances. Somehow the idea of being swept away by a handsome swashbuckling pirate has always appealed to me. Since that's not a very practical dream for a 40ish/lawyer/mother-of-two, I did the next best thing and wrote my fantasy adventure in To Catch a Pirate. You can read an excerpt and see what you think at:

Thanks!

Marsha Canham | 1 comments Just wanted to pop in and say hello. Anything to do with pirates, I'm there *s*. My absolute hero when I was growing up was Errol Flynn and he was the model for some of the heroes in my swashbucklers. Now if I could just find a real life Errol Flynn *sigh*

Kary Rader (karyrader) | 3 comments Hi all. I joined the group a few weeks ago and have been reading through posts and trying out some of your suggestions on my new Nook. How did I live without it? Just finished The Wind and The Sea at your suggestion. I loved it! For $2.99 it was not just a steal but a pilage and plunder. I just got Across A Moonlit Sea and will read that soon.

Thanks for having me.

I guess with these new "gizmos" out you are able to get more books ..than if you had to buy the "dead-tree" ones?

message 45: by Kary (new)

Kary Rader (karyrader) | 3 comments I love the gizmos, Sandi. Verity -- I wouldn't mind having the MC collection. Have you read the Free MC ebook -- Bound By The Heart? I downloaded it and China Rose last night. I am fairly single-minded when I really like something. My husband calls it "obsession". :)

I know the day will come that III have no choice but to own one ( due to space,I live in a condo)but I love my "dead-tree" books as they are much easier to "use"..open..close..and a beautiful cover to look at :)

message 47: by Verity (new)

Verity | 55 comments Kary, I have read all of em in PBs but would luv to reread in ebooks. That's why I wanna buy ebook version too. Anytime U guyz wanna do buddy reads just holler.

message 48: by Verity (new)

Verity | 55 comments Sandi, yeah having all these in ebook version is more convenient cuz my books are scattered in over mutiple shelves and cabinets plus 40-somefink boxes. Having em in my ereaders saves lotsa time cuz I just click away to find em. Hope you will buy ereader someday. One thing I luv bout GR is looking at all the gorgeous covers spread out in all their colorful glory. With shelves, all i see is the creased spines LOL

message 49: by Kary (new)

Kary Rader (karyrader) | 3 comments Sandi - You can download the Kindle or Nook reader to your PC for free and get all those great Free ebooks and tons of the classics for just a few bucks.

I never thought I would want an ereader either but I love my new one. I checked out The Outlander from the library to read but the book was so squatty and thick with the smallest micro letters I have ever seen (or not seen). I spent a few bucks to put it on my Nook and now the font is as big as I need it to be - which sadly, is pretty big. UGH!

I cant sit here for more than an hour..my back bothers me,and Id rather curl up in bed with a book or one of these readers, its just shopping around to find one that is easy for me to understand (not good with the "gizmo" stuff, and also whats advailable here in Canada. We dont have kindle we have "kobo" which is suppose to be like kindle? Or sony..but the stores here never have them in stock.I dont think Nook is here either, and if I buy a US brand, Canada dosent get the downloads for free.
