Hi all. What are your thoughts on evolution?

message 2: by Nathan (new)

Nathan It is undeniable that evolution took place and takes place. All the evidence is there from the fossil record to DNA.

message 3: by [deleted user] (new)

Yep, I agree. Have you ever read Darwin's On the Origin of Species? It's on my to-read list. Actually, it's sitting on my bookshelf right now, mocking me for reading another YA novel instead of it...but its time will come :).

message 4: by Nathan (new)

Nathan I haven't. I guess my problem with reading it is that I would rather read the most up-to-date information on evolution. Most of Darwin's ideas are infants compared to what we know now, so if I am going to read through a lungthy book on evolution, it will be a contemporary one. I liked Your Inner Fish.

message 5: by [deleted user] (new)

Hm...I can see where that would make sense; reading the most up-to-date information. I haven't heard of Your Inner Fish. I may have to check that one out.

message 6: by Kylee (new)

Kylee (kyleeraereader) I completely agree with Nathan. And I don't really understand how people can disagree with evolution when there is so much proof...

message 7: by [deleted user] (new)

Exactly. It's like someone holding up a spoon and saying, "See, this is a spoon." And having someone reply with, "Prove it." It's already been proven; you're holding the spoon. It's right there; they can touch it; they can see it. But some people still refuse to believe.

message 8: by Lauren (new)

Lauren I have a friend that doesnt believe in evolution. We actualy had an argument about it lol because i think its so stupid to think its not true, its not even something you should 'believe' in, it just is fact.

message 9: by [deleted user] (new)

*nods*
When there's that much evidence, you do have to question someone's belief system if they choose to ignore the facts.

message 10: by Kylee (last edited Oct 20, 2010 04:50PM) (new)

Kylee (kyleeraereader) Yeah I once asked my friend why she didn't believe in it and she said, "Just because... I know." It was very enlightening ;)

message 11: by [deleted user] (new)

Haha. I'm always thrown by that logic. "I just know." *shakes head* It's such a closed-minded way of looking at things. And, in a way, kind of a cop-out if you ask me.

message 12: by David (new)

David jones | 135 comments i dont believe in evolution i believe that God created everything.

message 13: by Lauren (new)

Lauren My friend said she just didnt think it was true =|. I competley did not, and still dont understand this lol.

message 14: by [deleted user] (new)

And that's totally your right to believe that. I'm just curious, though, what is it about the evidence that doesn't appeal to you?

message 15: by Kylee (new)

Kylee (kyleeraereader) David, I'm curious, if you believe God created everything, how do you explain all of the proof of evolution? I realize that sounds rude by I don't mean it in a rude way :)

message 16: by David (new)

David jones | 135 comments U know what i rlly have no clue i jus dont believe in evolution i guess

message 17: by [deleted user] (new)

Oh, okay. Well, that's your right :).

message 18: by Lauren (new)

Lauren so do you think that the evidence is just..myth?

message 19: by Kylee (new)

Kylee (kyleeraereader) Definitely :) So really, you just believe in your faith so much you don't question it? not saying you should, I'm just wondering.

message 20: by Kylee (new)

Kylee (kyleeraereader) I feel like I have to constantly explain that I'm not trying to be rude , since people are kinda tense about stuff on here haha :)

message 21: by Lauren (new)

Lauren haha i feel the same way, but i dont think you have cam across as rude :)

message 22: by [deleted user] (new)

I know, right? It's hard over the internet because you can't see someone's face or hear the inflection in their tone. That's why I try to add smileys, but even those sometimes seem like they might be taken as sarcastic when I don't mean for them to.

message 23: by Lauren (new)

Lauren i know, i think you just have to know coming into this group that everyone means well, and that your opinion is respected, because i think all of us do respect each other, minus a few arguments between a couple of people :S but if you dont take things the wrong way everything should be fine lol :)

message 24: by Kylee (new)

Kylee (kyleeraereader) I think sometimes people just get offended too easily and need to lighten up a little. But, that's the way the world works :)

message 25: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Yeh i agree. People need to chill out haha.

message 26: by [deleted user] (new)

There is nothing in evolution that states that God didn't create everything. If God created anything, he created it through evolution.

message 27: by Jerry (new)

Jerry | 850 comments well, what about creating adam and eve? they werent monkeys as far as i know.

message 28: by Jerry (new)

Jerry | 850 comments OMG I LOVE SCIENCE!!!!!! I WANNA BE A BIOLOGIST!!!!

message 29: by [deleted user] (new)

Science is pretty freakin' awesome.

message 30: by [deleted user] (new)

Well, Adam and Eve weren't real...as far as I know. But evolution doesn't state that humans evolved from monkeys.

message 31: by Jerry (new)

Jerry | 850 comments well, they probably did. actually (this is reverting to Jewish lore) in Hebrew "adam" means something like "mankind." adam could be a metaphor for all men, and eve could be a metaphor for all women. that would explain where lot's wife came from when there were supposedly no other women besides his mother eve. sorry, i just felt an urge to reveal that shocking bit of information that you probably don't even care about.

message 32: by Kylee (new)

Kylee (kyleeraereader) I'm sorry but religion confuses me haha :)

message 33: by Jerry (new)

Jerry | 850 comments well, evolution and religion are connected in a really unconnected way.

message 34: by [deleted user] (new)

I'm always interested to learn something new, Donatello :). But, I guess what I mean is, you said Adam and Eve could be metaphors, so they weren't real. They just supposedly represented real men and women.

message 35: by Kylee (new)

Kylee (kyleeraereader) I like that... since I don't believe they were real, it makes more sense to me.

Candace, why aren't you religious, if you don't mind me asking? Is it by your own choice, or is your family not religious?

message 36: by [deleted user] (new)

I don't mind you asking. My parents are religious, but they don't support organized religion (they don't go to church). I just have a hard time believing in something so fantastical as God. There is no evidence to support the idea of God; at least not any that would convince me. As I said in another thread, sometimes faith is enough evidence for some people; but it just isn't for me. *shrugs*

It's my own choice. My parents know and support me. It isn't something I talk about with people around here because I'm in the metaphorical buckle of the southern bible belt.

message 37: by Kylee (new)

Kylee (kyleeraereader) I think it's really great that you chose to follow your own opinions and ideas, despite the fact that you were technically raised around religion :)

message 38: by [deleted user] (new)

Well, my parents are very open-minded, so it wasn't really like I had to go against the grain, so to speak. My twin is a conditional christian; she says she only believes 'in case not believing will send her to hell'. My other sister is 'spiritual'. She says, "Religion is for those who don't want to go to hell. Spirituality is for those who have already been there." That's what she believes, anyway.

message 39: by Amina (new)

Amina (journalistam) May I ask what kind of 'evidence' u have abt evolustion?!

message 40: by Nathan (new)

Nathan May I ask what kind of 'evidence' u have abt evolustion?!

Fossil record, DNA, biology, laboratory observation...

message 41: by Amina (new)

Amina (journalistam) I kwn dat; I mean specific proof. How can someone say that monkeys DNA went thru muattion to eventually become humans? Sorry but that not only sounds pathetic, but just shows how people like u, who dnt blv in relelgion are cuming up with dumb excuses for stuff that only God can do.

I'm sorry, but my ancestors were not konkeys. maybe urs were, but not mine

message 42: by Nathan (new)

Nathan How can someone say that monkeys DNA went thru muattion to eventually become humans?

No one says that. The only people who say that are the people who know nothing about evolution's claims.

Sorry but that not only sounds pathetic, but just shows how people like u, who dnt blv in relelgion are cuming up with dumb excuses for stuff that only God can do.

Talk about pathetic. Not knowing anything about science is pathetic.

I'm sorry, but my ancestors were not konkeys. maybe urs were, but not mine

Learn about evolution before you dismiss it. You only make yourself look like a fool.

Gatorman Candace (Amare Infinitum) wrote: "There is nothing in evolution that states that God didn't create everything. If God created anything, he created it through evolution."

That is very true. This is the best way to explain how evolution and creationism can co-exist in any fashion. It is what I would subscribe to.

Lauren Rj Amina wrote: "I kwn dat; I mean specific proof. How can someone say that monkeys DNA went thru muattion to eventually become humans? Sorry but that not only sounds pathetic, but just shows how people like u, who..."

Actualy none of our ancestors were monkeys. They were Hominids, which evolved into homo sapiens. There is scientific proof of this. How do you think children gro into adults, babies to todlers, tadpoles to frogs. Its all apart of evolution, you can say its pathetic but you are experiecing evoloution eah day you live. However there is no proof that 'God' created everything, God is a faith that people believe in but no one can justify. Evoloution is fact.

message 45: by Nathan (new)

Nathan That is very true. This is the best way to explain how evolution and creationism can co-exist in any fashion. It is what I would subscribe to.

Evolution is one of the reasons I don't believe in God. It would take a very strange engineer to design things in such a way as to where they evolved into the end product when the engineer could simply have made the end product. God would have had to use evolution in order to make himself appear unnecessary. This seems like an odd route for him to take if belief in him is essential to human happiness as the religious claim.

message 46: by [deleted user] (new)

Evolution is one of the reasons I don't believe in God, too.

but before hominids, there was Australopithecus, and that literally meant "southern ape". before that species were pure monkeys, i believe.

message 48: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Well from what i learned in psychology thats not true. It says that, Gibbons were first and then there was a whole chain of evolutionary animals that lead to hominids then homo sapiens. And my lecturer made a point of saying that we were definitely not decendent from monkeys. I could be wrong but thats what i have learned.

message 49: by [deleted user] (new)

Evolution doesn't say humans are descended from monkeys. You aren't wrong :).

message 50: by Lauren (new)

Lauren woo lol :P
