It is definitely very different from the ones you listed. From the narration, to the writing, to the style of book. Which may be why it wasn't something you liked.
For me, it did grab me and I read it fairly quickly. I would have to agree with Miz Lizzie's descriptions of the book. That was how it felt to me too.

1952202 I really expected to like it (and feel guilty about not being more enthusiastic). As you said, it was quite different than the books that have really captivated me this year. As always I'm most interested in how the kids react and respond to a book. I love their perspective!


I know people are comparing it to Snicket, but that is not how I saw it. To me, it was its own thing, a mystery with quirk but without the smarminess of Snicket. I actually liked these kids and wanted them to be happy. Can't really say that for Snicket's protagonists...


I can't believe I never wrote about this book. So sorry if this is a bit late. I don't know how Ellen Potter does it but she always writes something so new and different. While I thought the beginning of the book dragged a little I was delighted with the ending. It was a charming story that kids will enjoy.
