College Students! discussion

After getting to meet Laurie Halse Anderson this past week, I decided that I should probably start a thread about her! Speak is one of my favorite books and she's slowly becoming one of my favorite authors!

I'm reading Chains right now. It's a middle grade novel but it is so incredibly engrossing and I keep forgetting that it is for younger kids. I had to read it because I devoured books about slaves when I was younger and I'm a history buff that loves anything to do with the Revolutionary period in America. It's really quite an amazing story and she did her research for sure!

I also own Fever 1793 and Forge (the next book in the planned trilogy with Chains..although I don't think you need to read Chains to read Forge..at least that is what Laurie said at her signing)

So, do you enjoy Laurie Halse Anderson? What books have you read by her?

I remember really liking Speak when I was in middle school. And I hate that so many people are still trying to ban it. I think it can be such an important book for middle/high schoolers. I haven't read anything other than Speak yet, but I plan to eventually.

Also, I'm definitely jealous that you got to meet her. :)

It really was ridiculous that they were trying to ban it! Likening that book to softcore porn?? I'm not really sure what book they read but it wasn't Speak!

I've read Speak and Wintergirls. I loved Speak and I wish I would have read it in high school or even in my earlier college years. Wintergirls was also really good but I think the format of the book annoyed me a little so I didn't like it as much.

I haven't read anything by her yet but I'm dying to read Speak, especially after seeing the movie on TV.

I work at an elementary school for their before and after school program and today, the smartest 5th grader was reading Fever 1793. She actually finished it while she was with me and said she loved it. :)

That's awesome Jenna! I would imagine it would be nice to work with kids that love to read!

Although I really did enjoy reading Speak at the time I did find her story telling to lack a little dimension. On a similar style I really enjoyed Stone's This is what I want to tell you. I feel the plot and characters are a little more developed.
