First off, the phrase "male prostitute" was overused, secondly, I don't agree with the church's main opinion on contraceptives. But I'm glad they're starting to loosen up :P

true but it was still discouraging, catholics have been asking the church to change their stance on birth control ever since man found out he could control birth
On the contrary, it means that the floodgates have been unlocked. I don't expect this pope to change the official position, but the next one or maybe the one after very well could.

I'm pretty sure that there's a verse somewhere in the Bible about not witholding sex within a marriage, but I could be completely wrong. *google searches* Found it!Yeah, it's from 1 Corithians 7:3-5 "The husband should fulfill his marital duty to his wife, and likewise the wife to her husband. 4 The wife does not have authority over her own body but yields it to her husband. In the same way, the husband does not have authority over his own body but yields it to his wife. 5 Do not deprive each other except perhaps by mutual consent and for a time, so that you may devote yourselves to prayer. Then come together again so that Satan will not tempt you because of your lack of self-control." (Emphasis added, of course, as they didn't have bold type back in the Bible days)
Anyways, the Church's argument is that it is immoral to use anything that man-made that can prevent pregnancy, including condoms. There is a lot of argument over whether this teaching means it is immoral for a couple to use a condom within marriage if one of the spouses has HIV.
There is also quite a bit of controversy if it is immoral to use birth control within a marriage. The Church says "no". Plenty of others, including some Catholics, say "yes". Ah, the controversy.

Because it was written in a time where sex was ..."
Again sorry for not being totally clear I was in fact agreeing, the bible totally supports sex during marriage I was trying to agree that the bible states outherwise to abstinence during marrige

Go Rachel! ^-^

I can't say I'm his biggest fan. If I recall correctly, he's the one who wrote the most commonly used passages about men having authority over women. Then again, he did write some good stuff, like that "Love is patient...." verse used at weddings so often. Oh, I have mixed feelings on him.
Ahhhh, that makes sense. Ha ha.And, I'm not sure if anyone here is against them. Except me, of course! *sarcasm...I think we all know I've no problem with contraceptives*
Because that is what I believe in. ;D But yeah, I don't think the church people would like that very much.
The pope is an ignorant shite, who is unable to think a single thought that does not involve God, Jesus or the Holy Ghost. Of course, this is just my opinion.
I wouldn't go that far. I'm no fan of the Pope, but his ideas of God are just as valid as anyone else's. Just as open to bias and just as capable of finding some truth. My main problem with him is: what makes him so special?
My main problem with him is basically the same as yours Rachel. What does he do? Preach about wrong and right? Great, 'cause we don't have enough of those already.
I don't mind what he does. If he wants to share his opinions with the world, that's fine. But why do his opinions mean more within the religion than the opinions of the rest of the members in the Church (clergy and laity)?
Yes, that's what I'm trying to say. Sorry if I'm being unclear, it's late here, and I really should be sleeping.Anyway, I agree with you. I don't get why his opinions means more than everybody else ideas. He's just another person.
Rachel (aka. Kaiserin Sisi) wrote: " My main problem with him is: what makes him so special? "well he is the elected leader of the Roman Catholic church but other then that not much.
I don't think a lot of catholics actually listen to the pope's advice on contraceptives, many of my catholic aunts and uncles have small families because they use family planning
Ah. That's probably it. I'm not catholic. Oh snap.Okay, sorry for the last two words there. Don't know where they came from ;)
And anyway; Goodnight.

Hey, how does he get elected?
The Cardinals all take a vote (I think theres 13 of them not sure though) of someone within their ranks.
umm I just looked it up and there are 108 cardinals eligible to vote currently and there can be no more then 120 (I was way off >.<)
