Great idea NU!
Okay I added 3 books. Let me know if I did it right before I add any more. My understanding is that we add books that we know of into the shelves listed so that others can find books to read sorted by type right?
I've done a few more. Here's a question though. What shelf would you put a book on that deals with a guy and a gal who run around on space ships from planet to planet but it is not grand enough in scope to be a true space opera but is certainly has more of a sci fi feel than a futuristic? I am dithering here on Sweet Starfire by Jayne Ann Krentz. I'm assuming that a 'meandering around on a spaceship' shelf would not be what we're looking for. :-)
Okay, call me slow. Where are the "group bookshelves"? I keep looking in topics, I guess, so I'm not finding more than Space Opera.LOL. Maybe I just need more coffee.
If you go to the top of this page, on the right is a list that says group home, bookshelf, discussions etc. Click on bookshelf.

LOL! You are too funny Anna C. I was just going to say the same thing that Jacqueline said.
Jacqueline wrote: "I've done a few more. Here's a question though. From my understanding, that one be classified as a space opera. But, a "meandering around on a spaceship" shelf isn't a bad idea =)
Yep, Michelle is right. I would class that as space opera, and the bookshelf link is in the upper right corner, under the group name. Thanks so much to everybody helping! You guys are great!
Okay, I'll go with Space Opera because it's the closet fit. I do realize that everyone will not agree on classifications though. I guess people can make their own determinations after they read a book. They'll just have to say "Well, Jacqueline was totally wrong when she put that book on the 'we love aliens' shelf or whatever. What an idiot!" :-)
LOL. Yeah, some books will be hard to classify, but we're just trying to give folks a vague idea of the contents. Thanks, I appreciate it, Jacqueline!
Thank you both! So, are we to add the SFRs we read to it somehow? I just noticed I have 500-odd books read. LOL.
Anna C wrote: "Thank you both! So, are we to add the SFRs we read to it somehow? I just noticed I have 500-odd books read. LOL."Quick question. I see you added The Lost Fleet books. They are space opera, but do they have any romance in them? They've been on my radar but I haven't read them because I usually go for at least "romantic".
I would not consider them SFR. They do however have a romance in them. Just as in real life people have relationships. It is not a hugh part of the story but it does grow over time. It more just that eventually the man finds someone. That being said, the books are great and I loved them. Heavy on the military and battle tactics.
Do we need an erotica shelf? I think it might be important for people looking to stay away from that or for those searching specifically for that. Books could always be put in more than one category. What about shelves for 'near future earth' 'steampunk'
'cyberpunk or nanotech sci fi' 'hard scifi' 'military sci fi' 'alternate history' 'speculative'
What does eveyone think about any or all of the above being desirable or necessary shelves?
I agree with Jacqueline. There was a bit of Romance but not much. Most of it didn't culminate until the last book, but you can't just read the last book because it won't make sense. To me the Lost Fleet "series" reads like one long book that someone told the author had to be broken into separate books. The only annoying thing, viewing them this way, is that he had to recap what had gone before in every book. Without that they'd be a third shorter.
I can remove them if you all think they don't count. I didn't see a Romantic SF shelf or I'd have put them there.
About more shelves... I think many books fall under more than one type and that having a lot of shelves might make it more confusing to find them. I do think having an erotica shelf and a Romantic SF (or more SF than R) shelf would be good, though.
Thanks Jacqueline and Anna CThat's good to know. I like reading SF that has only hints of relationships, too. I like knowing about these because it's more likely that my husband and I might like the same SF books. It's kinda funny that we both read SF but don't overlap very much. I don't like to read SF with sad endings or killed off relationships, even if they're realistic.
It's kind of a category itself, "SF that Romance readers will like" sort of thing. Not that I'm suggesting that! I like the suggestion of a "Romantic SF" shelf.
You all are absolutely right! We definitely needed an "erotica" shelf. I've also added "military," "steampunk," and "romantic sf" to cover people's broader interests.
Can we have a biopunk shelf? Not sure if there are many out there, but it might make the few that are easier to find.

It's okay to add books to multiple shelves right?

Yeah its okay. I can't wait to see what you add to the biopunk shelves! I'm not familiar with it, and now I'm curious. You see, I've been trying not to buy books, but now I have to have some biopunk- whatever it is, LOL!

Feel free to help out and move some of these books into their respective categories. ;)
Also, if you have any ideas for shelves, you can list them here!
