Dang! Okay...
Cat 2: Journey to the Centre of the Earth by Jules Verne. In addition to wanting to re-read it, it's short and free.
Catie wrote: "I would like to nominate Doomsday Book by Connie Willis for Cat 2. It was published in 1992, though...classic enough?"Some define a classic as 25 years after it was first published. If that is the case then it would not qualify. Lori what say you.
Susanna wrote: "Category 2: The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress, by Robert Heinlein"I had forgotten about that one . Good choice .
For Cat 2, I'd like to nominate Downbelow Station (Company Wars, #3) by C.J. CherryhAn awesome, very tense book about the pressures and impact of a political conflict that goes ballistic, with an outlying space station caught fielding refugees at an unprecedented rate, and warships rebelling against a distant, established earth government trying to hold on to its outlying stations, with situations happening and snowballing faster than communication can formulate a response.
Even though this is marked #3 in a series, it actually stands alone.
Hugo winner for Best Novel in 1982, so fits the 'classic' catagory stated (pre 1990)
Susanna wrote: "How recent is Snow Crash?"It was published in 1992.

I would like to nominate Tomorrow, When the War Began by John Marsden for Cat 2. I'm not sure if it's Sci-Fi enough, but it's post-apocalyptic and was published in 1994.Edit: Changing my nomination to Cat 1 instead then!
Eek. We are going to run into some issues with the definition of "Classic" sci-fi. Let's put some parameters around it....
I would classify anything pre-1990 as classic. (and this is killing me because I was in high school in the 90's and that certainly does not make me feel good calling that time "classic"!)
If you like, you can just edit the existing rec's and change the cat's to #1 instead of #2.
Is everyone ok with this?

Category 2: The Demolished Man by Alfred Bester (originally published 1951)"In the year 2301, the wealthiest man in the universe is determined to commit murder in a world in which telepaths are used to detect possible crimes before they can happen."
I really hope we don't end up with 2 sci-fis next month. We have sci-fi this month too with Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep. Please have mercy on those of us that really no not like sci-fi. Space them out a bit.
Petra wrote: "Cat 1: The Girl Who Stopped Swimming by Joshilyn Jackson"This sounds good! It gets my vote (and added to my "to read" shelf!

Eep. Thanks for the nomination for Lily of the Nile. If it's chosen, I'll be happy to stop by and do a Q&A ;) Good luck picking from all these great books though!
SOrry guys, as you can see from the title of the thread, and post #40, we already have our winners for the month. Noms and votes have closed.
I just ordered a copy of The Kitchen House on my Nook! I can't wait to read it and join in on the discussion!
Ahh! My Nook died today! And I can't read The Kitchen House! But...I'm getting it fixed tomorrow and can start reading it then. Yay!
Where is the side discussion for The Kitchen House? I can't seem to find it. I can't wait to start it, I'm waiting on my copy to arrive from the giveaway you did and I'm hoping it arrives soon! :)
Its under the group discussion folder, where the usual group reads are ..... it won't be more active until the middle of the month, but feel free to get started and commenting as soon as it arrives! Should be any day now.

We will have two catagories this month:
Cat1- Regular Fiction/Non-Fiction
Cat2- Classic Sci-Fi Theme
Only ONE nomination per person.
If you nominate a book for catagory 1, you CANNOT nominate a book for catagory 2, and visa versa.
Please be sure to post the title, author, and the catagory it belongs to.
If your post does not have those three things, it will not be counted.
Are you ready?
I will accept nominations through Saturday afternoon. If we get tons of nominations, I may pull the plug on it a little early, so get them in as soon as you can!
Once I close nominations I will create the polls and let you know when it is time to vote!
Hit us with your best noms!
