Kayla (soursequence) Nothing has gone on here since last month, hopefully everyone is still around and has some interest.
I thought of this as another Jezzie Book Group but nothing really worked out that way. What do you guys want out of this?

Also, what books should be up for discussion in January?

Emily | 11 comments I'm a big fan of science fiction.

Me too. I would love to do a steampunk book. Although I just started reading William Gibson, so I'd be up for that too.

Easy enough to combine both -- what about 'The Diamond Age: A Young Lady's Illustrated Primer' by Neal Stephenson?

message 5: by Emily (new)

Emily | 11 comments The Diamond Age: A Young Lady's Illustrated Primer by Neal Stephenson WAS AMAZING!

I've already read it, but I wouldn't mind reading it again.

I agree. I've read it, but I'd love to read it again. It's a great novel.

message 7: by Emily (new)

Emily | 11 comments Hmm... If we've both read it before, maybe we should read something different.

Lets poll for some other steam punk novels.

I09 posted a bunch of relatively new ones.

message 8: by Emily (new)

Emily | 11 comments Maybe A Dream of Perpetual Motion by Dexter Clarence or The Bluntline Special by Mike Resnik?

message 9: by Arlene (new)

Arlene | 6 comments The New Amsterdam series looks interesting (of course I will assume everyone has read it and I'm behind as usual). The Bluntline Special looks like it has potential, but the Cowboys (or scientists as it were) vs. Indians theme makes me a little nervous (yes, I'm an overly sensitive PC liberal, I'll admit it).

Emily | 11 comments Or if we want female centric, we can go Parasol Protectorate (Soulless, Changeless, Blameless by Gail Carriger).

message 11: by Arlene (new)

Arlene | 6 comments I've been wanting to read Soulless, so I'm going to vote the Parasol Protectorate series for January.

message 12: by Emily (new)

Emily | 11 comments I haven't read the New Amsterdam Series, but I've liked Elizabeth Bear's other works (particularly Dust).

I have read Soulless and it was quite fun.

message 13: by Desiree (new)

Desiree (wickedlittlehigh) | 20 comments I would read Soulless, I just got it on my Nook and was planning on reading it soon anyways.

I freaking love the whole of the Parasol Protectorate series. I have a huge crush on Madame Lefoux. I firmly recommend the whole damn series to anyone who likes sci fi, steampunk, or strong lead females.

I have already read the whole series. What about 'The Windup Girl'? I meant to read it when IO9 did the book group on it, but I never got around to it.

message 16: by Kayla (new)

Kayla (soursequence) Parasol Protectorate series, the way to kick off 2011?

Let the reading/discussing begin!

message 17: by Emily (new)

Emily | 11 comments Slay, I tried the Windup Girl and couldn't get through it.

How about a re-read of Soulless and you and I also read "The Bluntline Special"?

message 18: by Emily (new)

Emily | 11 comments Hurr. Buntline Special.

message 19: by Slay (new)

Slay Belle (slaybelle) Dorilys wrote: "Hurr. Buntline Special."
I'm keen for that plan. Bluntline and Soulless it is.

message 20: by Arlene (new)

Arlene | 6 comments Should we add Soulless to the book shelf?

message 21: by Emily (new)

Emily | 11 comments I think Soulless and Buntline Special for anyone not interested in Soulless!

Slay Belle (slaybelle) Dorilys wrote: "I think Soulless and Buntline Special for anyone not interested in Soulless!"

I added them. I think anyone who has access to the group can.

message 23: by Emily (new)

Emily | 11 comments Oooo! Nice! I just got Buntline Special from the library and as soon as I finish the book on my Nook, I'm starting it!

message 24: by Emily (new)

Emily | 11 comments I was a little disappointed by The Buntline Special.

Slay Belle (slaybelle) Dorilys wrote: "I was a little disappointed by The Buntline Special."

You and me both. I gave up on reading it, actually. I found the pacing off and the 'then he said, then she said' aspect of it irritating. On the other hand, I also read the 3rd Parasol Protectorate book, Blameless, and liked it quite a bit.
