Happy New Year everyone. I first read this book a copy years ago when it was first available in paperback. I really liked it. In many ways its a standard fantasy world but the characters are so well drawn and interesting that I was immediately sucked into it.

I read it last February and continued with the next two about a month or so apart, but stalled there. I have the fourth in the queue and maybe this discussion will nudge me to start it.

Donna (donnahr) I got an early start on the book and read it over Christmas vacation. I definitely liked it and gave it 4 stars, but I don't feel compelled to read the rest of the series like I did with The Blade Itself series.

Sandra (sleo) I read this last year and enjoyed it. I have the second one, but haven't felt any compulsion to read it.

Carey Bostwick (carebear11) | 40 comments I just finished the book and it was good. The ending makes me want to read the next book. the book is similar to A Game of Thrones by George R. R. Martin but with more magic and fantasy aspects.

I'm about 20% into this book and having a hard time getting into it. Possibly because I haven't had a lot of time to read and each time I go back to it I'm struggling to recall what the current part is about. The beginning seems to jump around a lot.

I usually don't mind a book jumping around, but with my limited time since starting this I'm struggling. I might just put this one aside and find something lighter to read until I have more time.

Liz | 19 comments I read this when Amazon had it as a freebie. I don't even remember how long ago that was. I enjoyed it, and do want to read the next book but not enough that it leaps to the top of my to be read pile - or even to purchase list. But I'll get there someday.

Joseph Finley (josephfinley) | 6 comments The novel really picks up in the second half of the book. I agree that the ending was good and makes you want to keep reading the series. I ended up reading the next book, The Charnel Prince, but I've not read the third book in the series. In my view, The Briar King was the best of the two.
