Rant!?!?!?!

Actually, I agree and if I get a call and they mispronounce my name I tell them they don't live here and hang up. My name is easy to pronounce. But as you say if they can't speak english why call? I'm not going to understand them. I'm not against ppl having jobs but give the job to someone who can do it.
To sales calls, I always just say, "No thank you" and hang up. The accent thing, I try very hard to understand what they say. They may speak English but with a strong accent. My husband has a couple of Russian employees and speaks Spanish so he has a lot of Hispanics come in. They really are trying hard to speak clearly, you just have to slow yourself down and listen carefully. Now maybe they shouldn't be making phone calls if they're accent is thick, but maybe in India people think they have a great English/American accent.
Heads up guys... this is a sensitive topic, so please be mindful of the words and tone you use!Thank you!
First of all, I just want to say that I did not post this with the intent to be ugly. I am sure that if I called someone up North ( I live in GA) they would think I have a very strong Southern accent. That being said, this person that called me spoke with such a heavy accent that he was literally unintelligable. THAT is my issue. If you are going to hire someone to do a job, please train them to do so properly.
And as to keeping things to myself . . .in no way, shape or form was I derogatory or ugly. I would not DREAM of going to a non-English speaking country and apply for a job without first learning their language THOROUGHLY nor would I make calls to said country.
I think its possible that we may not see what is derogatory or ugly to someone else when we're not walking in their shoes, true? Your *intent* is to rant, not to offend, and I have no problem with that here at all.
Just be very careful please. :-)
Megan, I understand that you are ranting & hopefully do not mean to offend but it IS kind of offensive. As Carolyn F. stated, I think that for the most part these Indians you refer to are trying their best to speak clearly. Yes, a lot of them have strong accents but having a strong accent & not being able to "speak properly" is not the same thing. Nor does it effect how they do their jobs for the most part.If you feel so strongly about this, than your issue is with the EMPLOYERS who hire Indians with strong accents or not very good english, not the Indians themselves. They needs jobs just as much as anyone else & who the hell are we to tell them "No! You can't work here because in my mind, you don't speak properly"?
I find your post both offense & extremely ignorant. My father is Tahitian & his family is from Tahiti. Does that mean they shouldn't apply for jobs in the US because they have strong accents? I'm sorry if you don't like it but frankly, you might want to get used to & tolerant of it. The United States is a melting pot & MANY people from different countries & of many different ethnicities immigrate here. Instead of being pissed off & ranting about something you can't change & the person can't help, maybe you should practice empathy in the future.
As to my earlier post of you "keeping it to yourself", I believe you should. I admit, sometimes I get pissed at my local Chinese restuarant. They charge for EVERYTHING-even paper plates-& it annoys me. But am I going to hop on GR & create a thread about it? No, because I realize that the world does not revolve around me & people may be very offended by what to me might be a harmless rant. There is a time & a place for everything & in a public group where many ethnicities are members is not the place IMO.
I'm done. I've put in my two cents. If after this, you still do not realize the situation taking place, I can't help you.
Ok, so...here is what I find interesting about this discussion. I think what has been expressed is common complaints/rants/issues for everyone in America these days (on all sides). I also believe that we can and should have these discussions. Again, please be kind and respectful! But what is so interesting to me today, in our little lovely WLLK group here is that this discussion is happening today of all days.
I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal."
I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia, the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slave owners will be able to sit down together at the table of brotherhood.
I have a dream that one day even the state of Mississippi, a state sweltering with the heat of injustice, sweltering with the heat of oppression, will be transformed into an oasis of freedom and justice.
I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.
I have a dream today!
We are all still and always growing, and we can all help one another in this journey.
lethal, I am sorry that my post offended you. My complaint is with those companies, not the man who is trying to support his family.
Thank you. I apologize as well. I'm sorry if it seemed like I was attacking you. That was not my intent. This subject hits very close to home for me because of the things my extended family have had to deal with in regards to prejudice & people thinking they are not intelligent because they have accents and/or don't speak English very well. I just wanted to bring to your attention that a harmless rant to you may not be so harmless to others.
On a lighter note, I love when telemarketers call me and have such a stong accent(of some such counrty, be it India or whatever) and try to tell me there name is ADAM SMITH? I'm like "are you sure thats your name?"...I get a huge kick out of it!My best friends parents are from India and have lived in the US for many many years(both respected doctors in out community) and they both carry super strong accents to this day!
I love talking to telemarketers from India. I make them laugh and they have always been light hearted. Besides I LOVE Bollywood movies..... ever since I was 15 when I saw my first.
my cousin just married an Indian girl from England, her accent is beautiful and also let me just say..that wedding was the best wedding I've ever been to!!! So much fun!
Have watched any Indian movies????? They are FUN! And almost all have HEA endings!
A few, not many though. I love all the dancing, and to see it up close at the wedding was sooo cool. Plus there were some really really hot guys there! :-)Just sayin...it helps!
LOLOL .... I agree completely Bekah...

Seriously???
Just got a call from some guy in India (judging by his accent only) and he couldn't even speak properly?
Okay, end rant.
*edited to add* I know everyone needs jobs and all that and I'm not downing anyone, just saying that they need to educate them a bit before turning them lose!
