Melanin Sun is a 13 yrs. old black male who is very, very dark skinned and has grown up in a household with a brown-skinned mother. It has been he and his mother since he can remember. He is a good kid who lives on the streets of a Brooklyn black community. His passion is collecting information about species which have or may go extinct -- and he has even gotten his "home boys" to understand where he is coming from.

All is well until his mother explains that she is not only gay, but in love with a white woman.

This author handles this in an amazing way. I wish this book could be on the reading lists for a number of schools. It is so perfectly suited for the YA audience.

I highly, HIGHLY recommend reading this book.
