Pia (piaveleno) | 11 comments Hi Queereaders!

I'm looking for fiction with a main character that is FtM or a memoir style book with the same. I recently read She's Not There, a memoir of a MtF and would like the perspective of the other side.

Recommendations?

S.B. (Beauty in Ruins) (beautyinruins) | 37 comments I'm unabashedly obsessed with the MtF experience in literature, Pia, but a few FtM books I'm aware of that seem to be highly regarded are:

Becoming a Visible Man by Jamison Green
Both Sides Now by Dhillon Khosla
Stone Butch Blues by Leslie Feinberg
The First Man-Made Man by Pagan Kennedy

Hope that helps

Pia (piaveleno) | 11 comments Thanks Sally!

What are your favorite MtF stories? I've ready the one I mentioned, but I'd love something written in more of a fictional voice if you have a recommendation?

S.B. (Beauty in Ruins) (beautyinruins) | 37 comments Two that I've read are Mission Child by Maureen McHugh (sci-fi story that is initially about disguise, but then gets into interesting questions about identity and surgical transformation) and Sacred Country by Rose Tremain (realistic depiction of a transformation that began at age 6). Ellen Wittlinger's Parrotfish has been on my to-read list for a while as well (story of a teenage girl who decides to live as a boy).

While not specifically MtF, Mary Gentle's two Ilario novels and Gary Jennings' Raptor are fascinating reads. Both deal with true hermaphrodite characters who alternate their lives between male and female, having to disguise or alter aspects of themselves to be either gender.

Let me give it some thought and I'm sure I can come up with more . . . drawing a blank at the moment.

Pia (piaveleno) | 11 comments Oh thank you! The gender fluid ones sound right up my alley.

Fiona (fvgray) Sally, your recommendations seem brilliant. I am really pleased that Pia initiated this discussion. Thanks!
