Do you want to nominate a book to read in April? Nominating ends on Friday (like all the other groups).

message 13: by [deleted user] (new)

Hi, it's me!
I haven't read a lot of Charles Dickens, but I started Oliver Twist a long time ago, but I didn't get to finish it. I've read a lot of excerpts from a lot of his books, and I can't name all of them, so there.

Connor Kinkade (connork) | 226 comments Mod
I am about at the same page as you. I've read A Tale of Two Cities and started Oliver Twist. I created this group to read more of Dickens's works.

message 15: by [deleted user] (new)

I started A Tale of Two Cities, but I couldn't get past page 11.

message 16: by Brenda (new)

Brenda Hi. When I was younger, I read "A Christmas Carol" and loved it. That love led me to "Oliver Twist" which I've read twice, and then to "Great Expectations". I tried "A Tale of Two Cities" and couldn't get into it, but that may have just been my faulty mindset due to life's circumstances. I'm also a fan of John Irving whose literary hero is Dickens. There's a fantastic essay he wrote entitled "The King Of The Novel" (published in "Trying to Save Piggy Sneed")which made me love Dickens AND Irving even more. If you like Dickens, it's worth a read!

message 17: by [deleted user] (new)

The only Dickens book I've started was A Tale of Two Cities. Welcome!

Great! Glad that you like some of Dickens' works because most of us just haven't read them yet. All I've read are A Tale of Two Cities (one of my favorite books of all time) and A Christmas Carol. I've read a few other short stories as well like Mugby Junction, Mrs. Lirriper's Lodgings, and The Seven Poor Travelers.

message 19: by Brenda (new)

Brenda Thanks for telling me about those short stories, Connor. I'll have to look them up and give them a read!

message 20: by Connor (new)

Connor Kinkade (connork) | 226 comments Mod
Your Welcome! Mugby Junction is better than the others. The Seven Poor Travelers is the most famous of the three I think.

message 21: by [deleted user] (new)

Welcome new victim, er, member.

O_O

message 23: by Brenda (new)

Brenda My thoughts exactly... o_O ...what did I get myself into? Some strange Dickenson-esque plot where I get cyber pickpocketed?

message 24: by Connor (new)

Connor Kinkade (connork) | 226 comments Mod
It depends on which members you talk to I guess...

message 25: by Brenda (new)

Brenda Eh, it's okay... all they'll get is 3 pennies, a rumpled reciept, and some pocket lint.

message 26: by Connor (new)

Connor Kinkade (connork) | 226 comments Mod
:) if they pickpocket me, they'll have almost 100 dollars, 50 cents in pennies, chap stick, and a pedometer.

message 27: by Brenda (new)

Brenda Be careful, that Chapstick makes you a target, especially if it's cherry! ;)

message 28: by Connor (new)

Connor Kinkade (connork) | 226 comments Mod
:) it's flavorless. (:

message 29: by [deleted user] (new)

GROSS!!!

message 30: by Brenda (new)

Brenda lol... Emily, you can relax. I was just sayin' Chapstick's a valuable item! In other words, forget the $100, the Chapstick's what's worth stealing!

message 31: by [deleted user] (new)

:) If you pick pocketed me, you'd get NOTHING!!!

message 32: by Connor (new)

Connor Kinkade (connork) | 226 comments Mod
I sure hope so! As long as I have chapstick, I don't have to worry about getting mugged. :)

message 33: by [deleted user] (new)

Brenda makes this group say dumb things. :)
Omigod, you're amazing!!!

message 34: by Brenda (new)

Brenda Thanks, Val...can I call you Val? Stay tuned for further antics! I'll try to keep things entertaining for you.

message 35: by Camilla (new)

Camilla Guimaraes (millaguimaraes) Hi, I'm Camilla and I read A Christmas Carol and am reading Great Expectations.

Hi Camilla! I read (and loved) A Christmas Carol but haven't read Great Expectations yet. Have fun in this group. We like it when active members join the group.

message 37: by Camilla (new)

Camilla Guimaraes (millaguimaraes) Thanks Connor, I loved A Christmas Carol too but Great Expectations is a little hard to read.

Connor Kinkade (connork) | 226 comments Mod
I heard it's his hardest and most serious work.

message 39: by Camilla (last edited Apr 04, 2011 01:56PM) (new)

Camilla Guimaraes (millaguimaraes) I don't know if it is but I can tell you that I'm having a hard time reading it.Hard and wonderful at the same time.

message 40: by Connor (new)

Connor Kinkade (connork) | 226 comments Mod
Good about the wonderful. I do like hard books, but not too hard.

message 41: by Camilla (new)

Camilla Guimaraes (millaguimaraes) I like it for the challenge but I've been reading it for several months because I reread each chapter several times. And sometimes I give up for a while and come back later.

message 43: by Kathy (new)

Kathy (cal506) Thank you for leting me join your group. I'm reading tale of Two Cities and it seems, Bleak House (?)

Since I've been able to download free ebooks, I have gonea little crazy reading classics as well as some rather obscure public domain books. Am having a wonderful time. Managed to get through War and Peace and even enjoyed it as well as Vanity Fair and The Moonstone.

Look forward to Dickens.

Kathy

Welcome Kathy! A Tale of Two Cities is my favorite book besides The Lord of the Rings. You will enjoy it. The last few pages are worth it (you'll see me post that a lot). Have fun and we hope you participate in the Bleak House discussion.

message 45: by [deleted user] (new)

GAH! WE START READING IT ALREADY?!

message 46: by Connor (new)

Connor Kinkade (connork) | 226 comments Mod

Oh! i panicked for a second. :P sorry

message 48: by Connor (new)

Connor Kinkade (connork) | 226 comments Mod

That's a long time.

message 50: by [deleted user] (new)
