I have read the book and remember enjoying it at the time. That said, it was definitely not a memorable read as some of her other books have been, since I had to re-read the synopsis to recollect what the plot was. Was a slow start for me too, although I was intrigued enough to keep reading.
Definately. I plodded along on this book for some time, way more than my usual 3 day pace for a really good book. This took me a couple months because I kept putting it down. But finally toward the second half it was coming together and at the end it definately wrapped up the developing mystery and relationships.

This book is very good. It picks up towrd the end. It the first one I read by her and feel in love with it. Just give it time and it will be worth it.
this was probably my least favorite picoult, but I still didn't feel it was a total waste of my time...
It isn't the best of her 'coz it is hard to get what she try to tell but not all bad. I still enjoy reading her book.
I liked it, but I was also confused by the plot and various characters. To me, this is one of the more mysterious Jodi Picoult books (House Rules being the most). I like mystery and don't mind confusion as long as things start making sense, which they do.
I've read all of Picoult's books. While this wasn't one of my favorites, it rates pretty high on my list. Stick with it, it's good!

I remember being very confused b/c of all the characters that were introduced at the beginning. It was slow at first, but honestly, once I got past the beginnig of the book, I couldn't put it down. It ended up being awesome!
This was my first ever Jodi Picoult book and she is now one of my favorite authors, so I would suggest you stick with it! It is quite different from her other novels. I know I loved it at the time but it's a few years ago now so my memory of character names etc. is foggy. I always suggest sticking with a book even if you aren't enjoying it. You never know when something will catch your attention plus you will feel a sense of achievement when you finish.http://divaliciouzbookreviews.blogspo...
Well, the present-day narrative and the flashback narrative shift interchangeably, so I suggest writing down two lists: one with characters from the historical period, and one with characters from the current tense. Keep referring to it when you don't remember who some one is, and after a while, everyone's voices will become familiar to you. It's interesting how each character brings a different point of view to the table. Also, Jodi Picoult unearthed a bit of American history that everyone would like to forget. I myself didn't realize we had people who actually influenced some...um...negative historical figures on the other side of the Atlantic. Let's just leave it at that. You will leave the book knowing something existed here in America once upon a time, that most people today don't know about at all.
It's one of those books (like Game of Thrones) where the beginning is really confusing, but gradually you get used to the characters and plot line. I was really confused too, the first hundred pages or so, but then it untangled and became amazing- stick with it!
I had a hard time getting in to this book, too. I think it's just because it's a sad topic and mostly she had sad characters. But, I stuck with it and I am so happy I did. If you were able to get through the unpleasant parts I'm sure you will end up loving this book.
