Kimber (goodreadscomkimberr) | 3 comments Hello fellow Nook friends! I was hoping you avid readers could suggest some clean novels. I have had my Nook for months, bought several books, and finished none of them because of disturbing content. I know I probably sound like a prude; however, because of past experiences I simply cannot read novels that contain sexual abuse, adultery, and consistent explicit profanity without having emotional breakdowns. I can handle references to these topics, but nothing in depth. Examples are "The Glass Castle" and "Water for Elephants". Both are phenomenal stories, but I simply could not handle the content. I absolutely loved "The Help"!

PLEASE send me some recommendations! I am aching for a fantastic novel that I can buy and finish!

Dorie (dorieann) The first thing that came into my head was Major Pettigrew's Last Stand. Sweet romance between older protagonists but clean. Also I always recommend Tony Earley's books Jim the Boy: A Novel and the follow-up book The Blue Star: A Novel. Both are excellent. Not sure if they are all available in ebook form though.

Britney (tarheels) | 80 comments One of my favorite authors is Mary Higgins Clark. All of her novels are clean. I think you would enjoy reading her.

Hmmmm...I don't recall there being anything disturbing along those lines in Juliet by Ann Fortier, and I found that one quite enjoyable. Also, if you like historical novels, I'd highly recommend Michelle Moran. Cleopatra's Daughter does contain violence, but it's mostly to do with the death of Cleopatra and Anthony (at the very beginning), some scenes at the Coliseum (gladiator stuff), and then (spoiler!) Selene does get attacked - but she's ok. I haven't finished Madame Tussaud: A Novel of the French Revolution (also Michelle Moran) yet, but there hasn't been any sexual violence - just the violence (disturbing, but not in the same way) of the French Revolution.

If you also enjoy stories that take place on alternate Earths, Jasper Fforde wrote a great series that starts with The Eyre Affair, where someone is messing with classic novels, and Thursday Next has to stop it.

J I just finished Alan Bradley's "The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie." An absolutely "sweet" mystery set in the 1950s. You'll love the main character, 11 year-old Flavia, and her unique voice.

message 7: by Clare (new)

Clare (clarereads) Romance:
The Secret of Joy by Melissa Senate,
A Countess Below Stairs by Eva Ibbotson,
Tasha Alexander is good too.

Replay by Ken Grimwood is a good fantasy novel, and under the fantasy fiction label, I like Sharon Shinn and Elizabeth Bunce.

Mystery/Crime:
There's a little vulgarity in the Tess Monaghan books by Laura Lippman, but are good mysteries.

I love The View from Mount Joy by Lorna Landvik.

If I know more your style or books you've enjoyed, I can recommend others.

Chris I like Sheila Connolly and Jennie Bentley/Jenna Bennett. They write 'cozy' mysteries. There's nothing graphic and little to no sex or language. There's also Victoria Thompsonif you like historical fiction.

Kimber (goodreadscomkimberr) | 3 comments Fantastic! Thank you all so much!

Stewie's Mom (stewiesmom) | 10 comments Also in the 'cozy' vein, try Susan Albert Wittig's Beatrix Potter series. All are clean, each have animals who talk to each other but not to the humans. Very nice mystery books.
