Maybe we could talk about Best friends in YA? The lack of them in some books, the terrible flat characterizations in others and the really good ones where they have a nice relationship? For example, I really thought the lack of any friends in Angel Burn was a huge minus point; on the other hand, a large part of what makes Saving Francesca so special was the amazing bonds of friendship those kids shared. What do you guys think?
Also, from her suggestion, I'm thinking she's not really looking for a very technical post, like the one on writing techniques. maybe we should save that for the Lantern.

I was thinking about writing something on the way gay best friends are being used as plot devices(shippers on deck) in YA. I like your idea.
Okay, so maybe we should do like a good, bad ugly thing? So I can talk about the good friend characterizations, and Jill can talk about the bad ones, and you can talk about the ugly stereotypes, and if Ceilidh/Katya/Mel also come on board, we can work out the remaining bits together?

Hah, that's one of my favorite movies. I can write my bit sometime tomorrow.
I forwarded the email to Ceilidh, Katya, and Mel. Mel hasn't gotten back to me yet, but Ceilidh and Katya have. They're both interested. Two of us can tackle each topic then I guess.

Okay, so here's how I figure we can do it: 5 modules, and we can split them between the five of us:
a) Good friendships in YA
b) Friends as accessories (what Jillian was saying abt flat 1-d friends who only boost the MC)
c) Mean girls-turned-best friend
d) Best friend-turned-backstabber
e) the stereotypical gay best friend
So, who wants to take what? Also, Cory, did you clear the idea with her? And ask her when she wants the piece?

I'm pretty much open for anything. My idea is that we could write about writing style, bad prose, good prose, or something along those lines.
