The history of the Huns and Magyars had always fascinated me. They were my ancestors. Our history is full of holes, mysteries and speculations. There are only a few written facts about us, besides our legends, which survived. Most historical facts were distorted or erased on higher command in the past two centuries. I chose to introduce some known facts from my rich heritage incorporated into a fantasy-romance novel.

The legend of the great stag. If you would like to read it in Hun carved writing, visit my website http://www.erikaszabolibrary.com
Unfortunately, this post does not allow pictures.
Wondrous headed doe, with horns of a thousand branches and knobs.
Thousand branches and knobs and of a thousand bright candles
Among its horns, it carries the light of the blessed sun.
On its forehead, there is a star, on its chest the moon.
And it starts along the banks of the shining heavenly Danube.
That it may be the messenger of heaven and bringer of news.
About our creator and caring god.

Hi Will
Today the legend of the Wondrous Stag is relatively short, although I remember Granny telling a longer version when I was a kid. Unfortunately, as many youngster, I didn't pay much attention back then. I used the carved writing in my diary as a kid, partly because Mom was not familiar with it, therefore couldn't read my diary. And partly because even back then, I was proud of being a descendant of a great culture. The Wondrous Stag is one of the oldest legends of the nation. It is so old that it is found in various forms among those nations who were the distant relatives or neighbors of the Hungarians, long before their settlement in Hungary. The meaning and the wording of the legends may have changed slightly but they all have much in common. However the Hungarian legend despite it's brevity includes in it many important points some of which can be found in most of the related legends found in other cultures. The symbol of the cosmos and the mother of the sun was symbolized as a large horned female doe. The great horned doe often was shown carrying the sun in her horns, in some cases the sun itself was symbolized as a stag the son of the doe of the legend.
