message 1: by Pamela (new)

Pamela (waterspout) Here are is a list of my book rules although I've been disregarding some of them recently:

1. First come, first serve. I read my books in order of purchase. (Disregarded because of The Fallen and City of Ashes.)

2. Buy all books in the same edition. (Disregarded in the past, being careful now.)

Well, I can't remember my other rules. :)) I would like to know what your book rules are. :)

message 2: by brittany (new)

That's exactly what I have going on. lol When my husband first passed away in November, anytime I would get depressed or sad or whatever, I would go buy some books. So I have TONS that I haven't gotten around to reading. Right now, I'm trying not to buy any though. The only ones I've bought in the past three months are Halfway to the Grave and City of Fallen Angels. So I've done pretty good. :)

message 13: by Bianca (new)

Bianca | 233 comments I always have a stack of books.. I buy soo many, then sometimes through the holidays I just stay home most of the time so I get through them pretty quickly. :)

Sorry about your husband Catherine, I know that doesnt change anything or make you feel any better, plus I normally hate it when people say that sort of thing especially to me, but I don't feel right ignoring your sentence and acting as if it wasnt there. :)

message 14: by brittany (new)

brittany (cirilla) Well said Bianca

Catherine (cattymccat) | 754 comments Oh, thank you guys. I wasn't trying to make everyone feel sorry for me... Now I feel kind of stupid. Thank you so much though. Really. It means a lot to me. <333

 Artemis | 4504 comments Mod
must remove book jacket while reading any hardcover

♥ Ashleigh ♥ Contrary to popular belief I'm not actually mad! (cheshire_red) 1 - read in order, if its a series
2 - dont dog ear page
3 - dont write on book
4 - if a series dont buy half hard copies and half paperback
5 - dont wet book
6 - have clean hands

message 20: by Patricia (new)

Patricia (PatchOrtz) | 13 comments Don't put lines in the book spine

message 21: by Patricia (new)

Patricia (PatchOrtz) | 13 comments Never use a thick book mark it will ruin the paper of your book

message 22: by Sasha (new)

Sasha 3) Don't write on books

4) Keep them in safe places, not out in the open or on the floor where they can get dirty and stepped on.

5) Buy paperbacks, they're cheaper and easier to carry around

Bianca | 233 comments Patricia wrote: "Don't put lines in the book spine"

I HATE that.. I especially hate it when you can't avoid doing it. You know how some are made a certain way and its hard not to put lines in it?? Frustrating...

message 24: by J. (new)

J. Bralick (jleighbralick) | 10 comments Wow, these are great. Glad to know I'm not the only one with book rules! ^_^ Many of mine have already been mentioned.

1) Don't mix and match hardcover and paperbacks in a series! (Someone once gifted me a paperback volume in a series I'd been buying hardcovers for...that still makes me sad and uncomfortable to look at!)
2) No dog-earing pages!!! EVER! *snarl*
3) Never skim ahead. Especially not to the end!
4) Never lend books that are hard to come by. They have a way of disappearing, causing much grief and lamentation.
5) Write every day. (Read, too, but for me writing every day is even more important!)

Catherine (cattymccat) | 754 comments Artemis wrote: "must remove book jacket while reading any hardcover"

I'm totally with you on this Artemis!

Yes I know those books! I barely open them and I can barely read but I try my best not to fold the spine!

message 27: by Bianca (new)

Bianca | 233 comments Hahaha it annoys me so much.. It really bothers me. :D Yes I try not to but sometimes it's just impossible!

message 28: by Emilija (new)

Emilija (coffeechatter) 1. If it's a series read in order.
2. If it's a series all covers have to match.
3. Prefer hardbacks instead of paperbacks because when I have them in my bag the edges always get bent and stuff. :D
4. If it's a paperback I always put a crease in the middle. I don't know why I just do.
5. Before buying the book I always read the first sentence and the last.
6. No dog-earing pages. Like ever. I keep my books in top condition. At least I try, because let's face it, my dog apparently likes to read and then tear out the pages afterwards.
7. Always have clean hands when reading. :)

message 29: by Candy (new)

Candy | 387 comments The only two rules I have for reading are to
1- ALWAYS read a series in order
2- never buy a book until I've read it and loved it enough that I'll read it again

I also agree with Artemis about removing the jacket.

message 30: by Caitlin (last edited Jun 09, 2011 08:59AM) (new)

Caitlin (catsbooksandcritters) | 10 comments 1. If possible read the series in order (I have picked up books only to later find they are later parts of a series)

2. Be nice to the books, avoid excessive tossing (unless you hate it), don't bend pages, and NO writing in the books (my copy of Brave New World I bought used and has writing everywhere!).

3. You can read in the bathtub, just don't let water get on it and don't drop it (I did this to one of my copies of Esperanza Rising)

4. Don't squeeze books on to shelves, if needed stack them in front of others.

5. If you can afford to pay for hardback books do so, they are harder to kill. ( I have a paperback copy of Harry Potter #6 that literately has one page connecting one half to the other.)

6.Do not lose the red ribbon while reading! (I usually lose book marks, but this one I'll of had for 2 years this coming Christmas)

7. Use sticky notes, folded up Kleenex, or little scraps of paper to mark quotes.

message 31: by Jacquel (new)

Jacquel (clairevioletthorpe) Another rule from me: "if a book does not capture your attention after the first three pages, put the book down and walk away; it's not worth reading."

message 32: by Pamela (new)

Pamela (waterspout) I have the perfect example:

Fallen

SORRY! It's just so SLOW!

message 33: by CαthεεBooks (last edited Aug 04, 2011 08:57AM) (new)

CαthεεBooks (catheehales) My rules:

1 - Try to get books at the library for free as much as you can.

2 - Save for the books you can't get at the library.

3 - Do NOT, under any circumstances, dog-ear a book!

4 - Don't take thick bookmarks, handkerchiefs will do.

5 - Try to get the book intact. ( I have a copy in hardcover of The Host and the cover (not book jacket) has lots of scratches, and it drives me insane every time I read it again!)

6 - Try rereading books I bought.

7 - If it's a series, read in order.

message 34: by Iola (last edited May 30, 2012 04:18PM) (new)

Iola (iolam) my rules

1. read at least 1 good and 1 bad review before buying.

2. dont lend out more than 1 book at a time too a friend. my friend still has 5 of mine.

3. NEVER DOG EAR

4. keep in a bookshelf and alphabetize (slight OCD)

5. try not to skim through to see if the characters name thats in a life threatening situation comes up again to make sure they are still alive :) (bad habbit)

message 35: by Brigitta (new)

Brigitta (gittakaiser22) 1. NEVER dog ear, ALWAYS use bookmark
2. keep on a bookshelf and categorize by favorite series and keep with its series
3. resist the urge to skip to the end to see what happens (really bad habit)
4. don't throw the book around, scrape it up, or rip it
5. if I lend them to friends, they have to respect my rules and the book

message 36: by Mel (new)

Mel (Daily Prophecy) (thedailyprophecy) 1. ALWAYS use a bookmark.
2. Never open my book to far; I don't like cracks in the spine.
3. Read a series in the right order.
4. Buy them in paperback unless there is no other option.
5. Keep them in their right place on my shelves.
6. Make a wish list with books I really, really, really want to own. Make other lists with books I will buy after those :p
