Coraline rested in the shade of a tree in the courtyard. Her eyes were closed, and she was desperately hoping that none of the guards would disturb her.
Zereth sat somewhat near Coraline, dozing off lightly. The sun was high in the sky, making the heat nice and warm as calming breezes brushed through the clearing. As if this place isn't hell on earth. He thought ironically, blinking in annoyance as a fly buzzed near his ear.
Renee sat in her regular tree, singing a soft melody that swelled in the wind.
"How doth the little Crocodile
Improve his shining tail,
And pour the water of the Nile
Upon every golden scale!
How cheerfully he seems to grin,
How neatly spread his claws,
As he welcomes little fishes in
With gently smiling jaws!"

Branwen was humming to herself just a little too loud to be ignored. She was under the same tree as Coraline, but didn't seem to notice her. This was probably for the best; even when she had been sane, she hadn't been very nice. "Ring around the rosy, pocket full of posy, ashes, ashes, we all fall down."
June hummed along with Renee, turning a page in her battered copy of Pride in Prejudice.
'In vain have I struggled. It will not do. My feelings will not be repressed. You must allow me to tell you how ardently I admire and love you.'

Crowe yawned, randomly sketching things in his book. His hand drifted to his opposite wrist, making sure the wrist warmer was in place, hiding the cuts and scars. He winced slightly as he touched a burn, his pencil digging into the page, ruining a drawing of a bird.
Coraline opened her eyes, smiling at Renee's song. She noticed Zereth and Branwen nearby, but didn't say anything so as not to disturb them. She watched Renee up in her tree, smiling more.
Warren growled at a guard before walking over to Coraline. "I hate them." He plopped down next to her.
"Aye." Zereth added sleepily, his head rolling a bit as he attempted to get comfortable.
Ever so softly, Renee started another song, deciding to make it lyric-less. A melody she had thought of only yesterday rose from her throat as she closed her eyes, smiling at (mostly) everyone's content with her song.

"Mhm..." Bendik said softly, staring at the ant crawling around on the ground. He held out a tiny finger, letting the ant crawl onto his finger. Oh how good it looked...and it would be awhile until they ate too... He slowly lifted it to his mouth.
Jace watched the gaurds carefully as he listened to Coraline talk and Renee sing. He sat in his normal cornner. No one ever bothred him there, and that's how he liked it. Renee reminded Jace of his little sister. That's why he would always keep his distance from her, he didn't want to kill another little girl.
Bendik put the ant in his mouth, sitting there. He smiled, digging through the mud. Was mud tasty? He chewed on his lollipop, staring at a worm. That looked tasty. Like a noodle. He liked noodles. They tasted good...
Coraline stopped, glancing at Bendik with concern on her face, then turned back to Warren. Hopefully Bendik won't get sick from eating things he shouldn't...
Coraline nodded in approval at Warren. "Yeah, um, Ben? If you keep eating like that, you might get sick." she said gently, not wanting to upset him by saying the wrong thing.
Bendik pouted. "But...but we aren't going to be eating for a while, a-and this lollipop was really clean when I found it. It was like, half in the wrapper too..." He whispered.
"Well, Ben, I think it's fine if you found it in the wrapper. Just try not to eat the ants and the worms, kay?" Cora asked, smiling.
Branwen seemed to gather enough lucidity to loll her head in the direction of Bendik and Coraline. "Let him eat the worms. Otherwise, they'll get in our heads." She sounded as if she were a mother explaining to children why they needed to eat their vegetables.
Zereth only let out an exasperated sigh, brushing his bangs aside from his eyes for just a brief moment. He sleepily glanced around the clearing before focusing on Bendik, giving a disapproving raise of an eyebrow; as if saying, You really think that's safe?
Renee, on the other hand, stopped singing as soon as she saw Ben digging through the dirt. Ben was possibly Renee's closest friend (besides June), but she felt it was her responsibility to make sure he didn't get food poisoning, or something of the likes. "Aaaaaaahhhh~" She called out. "Ben-Ben, stop it! Your nails are gonna be all dirty now!" She said, jumping off of the tree branch before dashing towards him at high-speed.

Bendik frowned, sucking on his lollipop. "But...I really want to know what they taste like..." He mumbled. "In my new story I'm writing, the main character feels conflicted to prove to this girl how much he loves her, but she says she doesn't like skinny guys. So he decides to eat a lot, but he doesn't have much money, so he eats what he can find. But in the end, he gets really sick because he eats rat poison and just as he is laying on his death bed, his crush reveals she loved him all along." He said as if it totally made sense. "I just want to know how it would feel for him, cause in one part, he eats worms. I can't describe it if I don't know the taste."
June glanced over at the two with a small smile. "Typical." She muttered, amused.
Warren nodded in agreement along with Cora.

He looked at his fingers. "Maybe the main character should get into a huge fight with his crushes crush, and at one point he is told to eat dirt, and that is how he starts realizing there is food all around him. That would be good..." He mumbled.
Jace started laughing at Bendik. "What idiot would eat dirt if he was told to?" he asked him cruely. He stood up and walked over to the other orphans.
Bendik pouted, looking down. "Oh..." He mumbled. "Yeah, I guess that is a stupid idea." He said softly.
((Awwwww I feel so mean now!))Jace snorted. "Stupid? That idea was beyond stupid." He picked up one of the worms from Bendik's digging and threw it against the wall. He then proceded to march towards the gate. Why not try to walk out when it didn't seem like the guards were paying any attenintion?
((Lol XD))
Bendik yelped in horror. "My worms!" He began to cry. He wiped at his tears, but dirt smeared on his face.

June rushed over to Bendik, softly moving his hands away from his face. "You'll make it worse Ben." She whispered, pulling a tissue from her pocket and wiping his face clean.
"But...but..." He sniffled, the sound of snot very loud. He whimpered, curling up, bringing his knees to his chest.
"Jace!" Coraline cried out, seeing a guard starting to notice him. Her eyes widened, and she looked back at everyone else, before trying to get him to come back. "Jace! Come back!"
Bendik glanced over at Zereth. "Do you want to finish off my lollipop?" He took it out of his mouth, holding it out to him cutely. "I was going to take some extra food from the supper table today. I heard today we are having beans. I like beans."
Zereth gave a subtle shake of his head while his eyes flickered to Jace's position. Concern tightened his throat, but the guard didn't seem to feel threatened... yet. One of them started moving towards the gate; a slow yet confident air in his canter.
Renee's neck hair bristled when she saw the guard in motion. Despite Ben having curled up into a ball, she forced his knees from his chest and sat in his lap, using him as some sort of shelter from the guard; her shoulders shivering in fear.

Bendik frowned. "Oh...they are coming..." He held Renee close with one hand, the other digging through a mudpie. He found a chip bag, and his favourite kind too. Miss Vickies, Salt and Vinigar. He began to salvate, shaking the dirt out of the bag and looking for any left over chips.
Crowe rolled over on his back, staring up at the sun. He closed his burning eyes after a minute, biting his lip. His hand gradually drifted to his pocket, closing around the small lighter.
"Unnnn! Don't eat that!" Renee moaned, snatching the bag out of Ben's hand and throwing it away. "Stop it! Before you know it, you'll eat rat poison; not just your character in a story!"
"But if I wash the chip off, it'll be fine..." He said softly. "Anyway, I'm really hungry. They have to feed us soon, right?" He tilted his head. His stomach felt like a knot he was so hungry. "I just wish I'd graduate from this place."
"Eat the poison, feed your darkness," Branwen said in a sing-song voice. She pointed at Bendik and said, "Keep youself bright for when you leave."
"erm...what?" Bendik glanced at Branwen. He always thought she was a little weird...though everyone here was weird, but she just made no sense...
"My family was dark, and look where I ended up. So stay bright." Branwen paused for a moment, collecting her thoughts. "And don't eat things you find on the ground."
"Exactly." She nodded in approval at Branwen. "Ben-Ben, she's telling you to stop being stupid and be smart for a change." Renee pouted, poking Bendik's chest. "Meal time should be in about ten minutes... But I don't know how you can look forward to this place's stuff..." She mumbled, her own stomach growling on complaint as she wrapped her arms around Ben's neck and hid her face.
((MY LIFE IS OVER!!!!!!!!!!!!))
Ben frowned. "Oh...but the food tastes really good. And sometimes I can sneak extra food when people aren't paying attention." He smiled happily.

((I went to the store and they DIDN'T HAVE MISS VICKIES ;A; This is worse then the day they gave me Miss Vickies Salt and Vinigear and it was really dill pickle :( ))
"Ben-ben is not!" He whined, curling up. "I'm just hungry! I'm growing, unlike you!"
"Ben-ben is not!" He whined, curling up. "I'm just hungry! I'm growing, unlike you!"
"I am!" Renee retorted, huffing a bit. "I'm gonna have a growth spurt, just you wait!" She said, thumping him on the shoulder for good measure; though she still clung to him desperately.
Ben glanced at the guards. "I just wish they were nicer..." He said softly, taking another lollipop out of his pocket and chewing on it.
"Don't we all..." She replied, before giving a wary glare at the lollipop. "....Did that have a wrapper on it when you found it?"
