Audiobooks discussion

I didn't much care for Norah Ephron's I Feel Bad About My Neck: And Other Thoughts on Being a Woman - she came off as feeling rather ... entitled to me. But, since my library had I Remember Nothing: and Other Reflections, her follow up book of essays, I decided to give her another chance. I'm about 2/3 finished (it's only three hours long), but my impression hasn't improved much. There are some interesting, even clever on occasion, observations, but for the most part she's either very self-impressed (oh, look at me among the literati) or so wrapped up in her celebrity-filled life that she forgets how far out of the mainstream she exists.

Yesterday, I finished listening to Cormac McCarthy's The Road, listened to the the whole of a BBC dramatisation of Murder in Mesopotamia (about 2 hours, but does that count as an audibook), AND started Six Suspects by Vikas Swarup.

The Road is superb, and the Agatha Christie adaptation was very well done.

I'm also really enjoying Six Suspects.

I enjoyed The Road too, very good. I couldn't stop listening and didn't! I think I went all the way through with barely a stop and still remember tears while mashing potatoes for dinner. Fortunately I have an understanding family :)

I've started my summer reading with Forty Words for Sorrow by Giles Blunt. The narration by James Daniels is very good, I'm liking it very much but wish the story would pick up a bit. Hopefully it will, soon.

I'm about to start Outlander, after all the rave reviews, I'm a bit excited!

did you find 4 & 5 unabridged? I've been looking and I can only find the Abridged editions.

I'm currently listening toDoes the Noise in My Head Bother You? (by Steven Tyler and David Dalton; narrated by Jeremy Davidson.) It is the memoir of Steven Tyler, lead vocalist for Aerosmith. The free-associative scat of Steven Tyler is tempered somewhat by David Dalton's writing and Jeremy Davidson's narration; but for those who have their wings, the spirit of Steven Tyler and A-Smith come through. This is a very much a memoir for fans only, the references to drugs, alcohol and sex heavy, and sometimes explicit and off-putting for the uninitiated.

I'm a couple of hours into Blind Allegiance to Sarah Palin: A Memoir of Our Tumultuous Years - good narration, and background of Alaska politics. Sarah and Todd's relationship seems much more dysfunctional than I'd understood.

I finished 10th Anniversary by James Patterson. This was another excellent book in this awesome series.

I am now starting The Deep Blue Sea for Beginners by Luanne Rice

I'm in the UK so we may not the same access, but number 4, Drums of Autumn is on audible unabridged, but I couldn't see number 5 at all

I never finished City of Bones. It was over-hyped IMO.

I'm struggling with how to write the review it wasn't bad but it wasn't that great either and it was just to formulamatic (I don't know if thats a word but it describes it best) and it didn't make me want to run out and get the next book.

A lot of people who had issues with the book mentioned the formula thing (she borrowed from Star Wars, Buffy, and Harry Potter). I thought it needed some serious editing and was not as well written as a lot of my favorite YA books.

Started Iodine: A Novel by Haven Kimmel.

It had me from the first paragraph. Another book I wouldn't have chosen had it not been part of a "lot" I bought from ebay.

I listened to that a while back and found it hard to get into, but once in I enjoyed it. I was delighted there was a part read by Tom Waits!
If you haven't, get yourself to a book store cause there's photos in the paper versions... I'm told. I haven't had a chance to look yet myself.

Aprilla are you talking about MI or the Keith Richards book?? We were referring to Mortal Instruments but as Tom Waits is a musician I am assuming you thought we were talking about the K Richards book?

I'm listening to Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemptionand really enjoying it. Hillenbrand also wrote Seabiscuit and she adds a great deal of detail to this WWII story that makes it so interesting.

I am starting Ender's Game.

DON'T get the Abridged as it's literally one tenth the length, how can you cut 90% of a book? Plus, it's not Davina Porter I think. I loved Outlander and many of the others, the ONLY thing that got me thru the last book was Davina Porter reading it.

Deadline: The Newsflesh Trilogy: Book 2 Very excited. Feed was wonderful and I'm not a big zombie fan.

I've started The Mapping of Love and Death,a Maisie Dobbs mystery set in 1930's London -- the narrator's choice of American accents don't seem to fit the characters well at all.

J T Ellison I'm listening to the Taylor Jackson series by J. T. Ellison. I didn't enjoy the first two much at all (All The Pretty Girls and 14). I nearly didn't read 14 but reviews here urged me on... so almost didn't continue with the series, but with the third (Judas Kiss) it picked up for me and I'm now enjoying the 4th (The Cold Room).

Last week I finished Only Time Will Tell, Jeffery Archer's latest (part 1 of a trilogy) loved it .
Then went onto A Clubbable Woman which was a big disapointment, found it rather boring.

I've had Feed on my Ipod for a while , and now after seeing several others here recomending it decided to give it a go, must admit- enjoying it so far

I need a cozy for a change.

They have A Breath of Snow and Ashes, but not The Fiery Cross yet...maybe next month?!? I'm so excited about A Breath of Snow and Ashes! Next month's book to buy. Looks like I will have to read the book of The Fiery Cross...bummer. I hate abridged books!

On that note, there is an abridged version of A People's History of the United States: 1492 to Present...how do you abridge history??? sheesh.

Life: Keith RichardsI am loving this book it’s like sitting down with Keith Richards as he tells you stories! The part about Phil Spector is a little freaky considering what’s happened with him in the last few years

I love Johnny Depps’ narration and wish he would have narrated the entire book.
I read he does come back at the end and am looking forward to that!

Listening to Julie and Julia: 365 Days, 524 Recipes, 1 Tiny Apartment Kitchen by Julie Powell.

I couldn't get into that book. She seemed too self absorbed to me.

I liked it, but it helped that I lived in her neighborhood for several years.

I think she was an entitled child. I also think her husband must have a few sisters which means he can encourage and tune out at the same time. A very rewarding husband trait. Mine was very good at it and only had one sister.

Yes my library system had the unabriged version on cd and playaway....the 4th book playaway was 45 hr 45 mins!!!!

I noticed Feed is up at audible as $5.98 regular price and if you are a member summer sale price is $3.35. I can only assume that the $5.98 is a misprint and should be $15.98 but if you haven't gotten it. It's a great listen and for $3.35 it's unbelievable.

I started listening to One Vacant Chair last night, and am hooked. It's $2.95 for 10 hours!

I'm so glad to hear this, John! I also really enjoyed reading this book and narrating it. This was my first paying job as a narrator. I've been volunteering for LibriVox for over 4 years. I hope I've done justice to Joe Coomer's book.

If Iambik can get the rights to more of Joe Coomer's books, there are plenty of us who would love to narrate them. We have a narrator's 'wish list' of books we would like to record that we all contribute to but we'll be up against companies like Audible. They control over 80% of the audiobook industry. Although Audible carries our (Iambik) books, they still want first crack at whatever is out there.
