I have never liked monster books all that much, but one monster book I adored and still love (even though I have never considered it as such, even when I was a child) is Where the Wild Things Are.
For kids who are afraid of "monsters" there's a cute one called Go Away, Big Green Monster!. It's sort of like a pop up book and as you read the story part of the monster starts to disappear showing kids that you don't need to be afraid of them because they aren't real.
is another favorite. I checked it out yesterday to get summer reading points since we own it. Every person who saw it said it was a favorite in their house as well.
Scarlet Monster Lives HereGo to Bed, Monster!
Monsters Are Afraid of the Moon
The Very Worst Monster
Mostly Monsterly
Leonardo, the Terrible Monster
Just a few. ;-)
I have a post on my blog listing and reviewing quite a few "field guides" to monsters. Most of these would be for kids older than 2.5, but if you're interested you can see the post at my blog Black and White (Words and Pictures.)
A book I just read today, The Monster Bed, by Jeanne Willis, puts a cute reverse spin on the fear. I'm not sure it would be effective for a child who is sure there's a monster under his bed, but it's cute. I like the stuffed monsters in the illustrations, including one from Where the Wild Things Are.
And I recall that There's a Nightmare in My Closet by Mercer Mayer was good & probably helpful.

is really fun. I'm going to have a "Friendly Monster" Halloween party this year at the library, so I'm using my son's love of monsters to find books for the program. I forgot about
. The real story isn't all cutesy like the Disney version.

Frankenstein Makes a Sandwich has some creepy black and white illustrations like the movies with characters like Wolfman, Dracula, The Phantom of the Opera. It has some really funny read aloud poems that children really would like.

We watch this on my library's TumbleBook collection. This is really a different topic, but these e-books are the only thing that really keeps his attention. That is a good thing for me, but I don't know about the "media" aspect of the books.
