I am a Danny Wallace fan too....his books are fantastic I especially liked Yes Man, Join Me and Friends Like These - only one I wasn't keen on was 'Awkward Situations for Men' which I found disappointing.

now taking nominations for august's theme holidays/travel writing closing date for nominations 11th july
how about 'The Psychic Tourist' by William Little? As yet there are no ratings for it on goodreads and it sounds interesting! Realise I can't nominate 3 books though so......draw sticks for it!!!
finally put the poll up for august's read, sorry a few days late but house is being rewired so all a bit of a mess at moment but wanted poll up asap :)
oooh, rewires a messy job - had mine done too but luckily my brother is an electrician so at least I saved some money if not mess! Hope it all turns out well and thanks for the poll
luckily not too much mess though , next stage is the windows a week on monday :) all my books are all boxed up in 10 boxes lol
well,if they fit in 10 boxes that seems to be an ok amount...guy came into my library today and told me he had counted his books (he is one of my best borrowers and book mad)....and he has almost 1000! I thought I was bad with 100 or so!

I reduced mine by getting rid of alot to school book sale - I love my books but the sight of my TBR pile was stressing me out - and I figure as I work in a library and can't pass a 2nd hand shop without popping in to browse the 3 for £1 books I can soon lay my hands on several more hundred, I reckon I am around the 100 mark again...once a bookie always a bookie!
Yeah, but I suspect that if I got rid of them, or some of them, all I would do is replace them, so I might as well stick with the unread books I've already got. They're not stressing me out, so I'll just try to reduce them slowly unless they start bothering me. If that happens, I'll have to take more drastic action. But having a book buying spree and splurging on 7 at the weekend didn't exactly help.
Changing the subject, but it looks like we're going for Round Ireland with a Fridge for our August read, unless I've read the poll wrongly.
I actually had that book in my hand in a charity shop other week but put it back on account of thinking if it wasn't chosen it would be another book languishing in my TBR pile...was only 30p too!! Ah well, I suppose given my job I should probably borrow anyway and I have got access to several library branches so should be able to get a copy!
Last time I looked I had around 650...sigh!
I think I've got around 650 waiting to be read too. I've set myself a challenge. I have to read 6 books and then I can buy one new book. I chose 6 because I think I might have a chance of doing that. So far, it's one down and 5 to go. Wish me luck!
Six books read before you buy a new one. Now that's a challenge! I know I should join you in that, but I'm not sure I have the will-power. I'm more read one, buy six at the moment - MUST TRY HARDER!
I'm trying to avoid bookshops at the moment. Not as easy as you might think when you work at a university, but I've managed not to actually buy anything yet. That a whole 2 and a bit days. Nearly a record for me.
well went a bit mad last week and bought 15 books , 3 in hay-on-wye , 3 from a charity shop, 6 form the works and 3 from waterstones and already read one of them already and onto another as all my other books are still boxed up as doing the decorating
Well I hope you enjoy them all! I am still staying strong, but the weekend is coming fast - that's going to be my real test. At least I can get Round Ireland With a Fridge from the library so that won't tempt me.
nearly read 2 of them already lol and swapped 4 books this week lol BTW lastest alexander seaton book 3 out soon

just started the August read - looks like it will be fun! Found myself laughing out loud on page 1 which is a good start - was imagining a very bad version of a Danny Wallace book but so far (page 19!) so good - a bit of humour, just what I need after reading 'A Kind of Intimacy'...creepy, very creepy
I'm going to have to check out "A kind of intimacy" now. I'm still waiting to see if the library is going produce a copy of "Round Ireland with a fridge" for me. I reserved it, and the last time I checked my library account said it was in transit. Now it's saying there's no copies available and it can't be reserved. I wonder what's going on?

maybe the book got around ireland instead lol

Well it's definitely gone somewhere. Leicestershire libraries are currently trying to locate it. It was in transit, but it didn't arrive at my local branch and now no one can find it. Any amateur sleuths out there? You can have a starring role in the case of the missing library book. But it's not looking like I will be able to join in the group read, unlessit turns up soon.
for it to be in transit, someone has marked it as such so looks likes its got lost on way (prob fell out in van) or it has not been marked as received at your branch. If anything like my library they only paperclip a piece of paper in saying where it is to go so if that fell out it could be at any branch in your authority (assuming its come from another library in your area) I saw this book for 30p in local charity shop - I will try and pop into town early on next week and see if its still there - if so I could get it for you X

Good luck! I just ordered some more books from the library. I can do it online.

Our library system also does not have Round Ireland with a Fridge. It sounds so funny but I will probably have to go interlibrary loan which can take awhile.

it maybe because it is about 8/9 years old - depending on shelf space some libraries don't keep older books - not general fiction anyway...usually end up in the reserve stock up in the eaves and then stays there unless someone can be bothered to go look for it...find that happens alot in bigger libraries anyway. I copy I got was well issued and musty - still enjoyed it and was left thinking thats the beauty of this group - get 'monthly' read that I may never otherwise have picked up that I have a go at and thoroughly enjoy so thanks for choosing this one! Have come away not only having had a good laugh but realising there is more than 1 Danny Wallace!
Alice - you may strike lucky with interlibrary loan - as its not a recent book if someone does have it its probably not on loan so you could get it within a week or so.....

You are probably right but they do have a few very old Norah Lofts books which are hard to get now. I guess it depends on demand.

yes, doesn't apply to all books, books by popular authors can still be on the shelves years later - but suppose this one was a little 'obscure' and a a fair few years old....depends on each authorities policies - I am just relating what tends to happen in the council libraries where I work.
My library takes donations based on some arcane equation based on what people at our branch read, if they have a copy already/how tatty their copy is vs how tatty mine is, if it's something unusual that people might read if it was available and probably several other factors. Balancing up shortage of space and providing a decent selection of books must be really difficult.I'm still hoping "my" copy of Round Ireland With a Fridge will turn up soon. One of the librarians at my branch is on the case.
