Divergent

Summary: In Beatrice Prior's dystopian Chicago, society is divided into five factions, each dedicated to the cultivation of a particular virtue—Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the intelligent). On an appointed day of every year, all sixteen-year-olds must select the faction to which they will devote the rest of their lives. For Beatrice, the decision is between staying with her family and being who she really is—she can't have both. So she makes a choice that surprises everyone, including herself.

During the highly competitive initiation that follows, Beatrice renames herself Tris and struggles to determine who her friends really are—and where, exactly, a romance with a sometimes fascinating, sometimes infuriating boy fits into the life she's chosen. But Tris also has a secret, one she's kept hidden from everyone because she's been warned it can mean death. And as she discovers a growing conflict that threatens to unravel her seemingly perfect society, she also learns that her secret might help her save those she loves . . . or it might destroy her.

Debut author Veronica Roth bursts onto the literary scene with the first book in the Divergent series—dystopian thrillers filled with electrifying decisions, heartbreaking betrayals, stunning consequences, and unexpected romance.

message 5: by Courtnay (new)

Courtnay Boateng (courtnay_boate) This book was absolutely fantastic. I read it in one day, just devoured it. It wasn't too sappy and the characters weren't perfect at everything - it was just more real than a lot of the other young adult books.

Imperio Anderson | 2 comments i know rite!!! thats why i loved it too because u can actually relate to these characters because there so reall!!

message 7: by Alyssia (new)

Alyssia (aly418) | 14 comments I just finished Divergent 10 minutes ago. It was fantastic. It was well written, the characterisation was excellent and Tris's growth throughout the book was believable and gradual. This is a must-read for all YA fans.

Cath Murphy | 2 comments *SPOILERS*

---------------

I really enjoyed the basic premise of this book - very cool idea about the Factions and having to choose which to join at age 16. Once Tris was in the Dauntless Faction, I lost interest because it turned into a fairly predictable romance and the stuff about the initiation into the faction was also not too surprising. The plot twist about Tris's family was good, but begged more questions than it answered.

And the big fail for me was this: if the Erudite were smart enough to make the Dauntless into mindless robots, how come they weren't smart enough to figure out a way to spot the divergents?

message 9: by Lauren (new)

Lauren @Cath

(At the end) Good point. Yeah it was kind of obvious who were divergent because the tests were wack or "data wasn't provided". Who knows. :)

κίρστεν (Kirsten) (kirsten_j) | 31 comments I requested this from a couple of libraries now. ^^ I'll see if it shows up on time.

message 11: by Knarik (new)

Knarik I finished this yesterday. It was good, and I would certainly read the next installment, but it did not have the excitment or the depth Hunger Games had.

message 12: by Melannie :) (new)

Melannie :) (melannie_reads) | 11 comments Urgh, I couldn't finished this one on time ):
though I'm really not sad about it, I wasn't liking this as much as I thought I would :/

Joan{missing the vampire bunny slippers!} (joan3000) | 195 comments I read this book about and I couldn't put it down until I had turned the last page!
There were some slow parts towards the end but as a whole divergent was one of the best books ive read this year.:)
I can't wait for the next installment in the series!

I don't usually buy int'l editions and that's the only edition available in my country.

message 16: by Joy (new)

Joy i've been trying to get my hands on this book.

no luck here. :(

message 17: by Reena (new)

Reena Jacobs (reenajacobs) | 42 comments I finished this one late last month and quite enjoyed it. My faction would likely be Candor. I've only understood for the last few years that people prefer omission to the cold honest truth. :)

message 18: by Chi (new)

Chi Oh I still love this book so much! I took that Facebook quiz and got Candor which does kind of fit since I'm notorious for my criticism. I truly thought it was a great read. :)

message 19: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer (panda62897) | 22 comments I just finished this book a couple weeks ago and already I want to read it again. Great plot, great characters. I can't wait to read the next installment :)

message 20: by Pip (new)

Pip (pippitybop) | 13 comments I absolutely LOVED this book - it exceeded my expectations as I definitely wasn't expecting much, many people recommended it and I felt I should read it. But OH MY GOD, I absolutely can't explain how much I loved it. The romance, oh gosh the romance. Too good. Can't wait for the next one!

message 21: by Ellie (new)

Ellie I loved this book! The romance was all right, just got a bit all-consuming at the end....and I don't like it when it's told in present tense, but aside from those, loved it.

message 22: by Ellie (new)

Ellie :) Well, that's great.

nightlyreadingheather (heatherhy01) I really like the book, but not as much as some people I guess? I did not think it was amazing or outrageous, I am not sure why?

Ellie XD Annoying.

message 34: by Ila (new)

Ila I absolutely loved this book. It was very reminiscent of Hunger Game. This book is very well thought out and detail oriented. I found the factions to be a little confusing at first, but the plot completely came together. I really loved the entire world and the dramatic change the main character went through. I can't wait to read the next in the series!

Ellie WHO CAN?????

message 37: by £mily (new)

£mily (3mily991) | 257 comments I liked this book, it was an ok read. Not as amazing as the Hunger Games (but what is). It was fast paced and you couldn't put it down for a moment. Tris was a nice protagonist, a breath of fresh air from all the whiny Mary Sues (*cough Bella Swan, Luce Price cough*) in YA literature. The romance wasn't great (I didnt like Four much *waits for gasps of shock to follow*). I probably will read Insurgent, but I won't be queuing up and the book store to get it.

message 38: by Mya (new)

Mya Maliyevsky (mmaliyevsky) | 105 comments Who is Mary Sues?

message 39: by £mily (new)

£mily (3mily991) | 257 comments 'A Mary Sue (sometimes just Sue), in literary criticism and particularly in fanfiction, is a fictional character with overly idealized and hackneyed mannerisms, lacking noteworthy flaws, and primarily functioning as a wish-fulfilment fantasy for the author or reader. It is generally accepted as a character whose positive aspects overwhelm their other traits until they become one-dimensional'

Luce Price was the WORST....of course, I haven't read Twilight or Hush, Hush. But still...if she wasn't such a wimp, she could have killed me with her wimp-ness....if that makes any sense...

Lol start the countdown! Yeah, I'm really hoping the movie turns out really good and gets even more fans for the series :)

message 44: by Ronald (new)

Ronald | 16 comments To be honest, I felt as if the first Divergent was better than Catching Fire and Mockingjay combined.

With that said,

*SPOILERS*

who else found it sad how cold Tris acted towards Al? Yes, he tried to kill her, but one must realize that all those haunting simulations can cause even the most sane man to go off the deep-end. I don't respect him for being weak, and killing himself. Tris had every right to be pissed, but the way she told him to basically go **** himself was just unnecessary.

message 45: by Beatrice (new)

Beatrice (beatricemasalunga) I love this novel because it was thrilling.
This will be a good match for Hunger Games. I hope the conclusion will be good.
