The Book Thief

I cried so damn much at the end. I'm not telling you why. You'll have to read it to find out. :p It's on my top 10 books list, I highly recommend it to anyone and everyone.

message 4: by Jeshu (new)

Jeshu (jeshusauria) I don't know why I cried with Tehanu. I swear that I cried every ten pages, and I couldn't read.

I also cried with The Shadow of the Wind, which is a beautiful story, with very, very sad moments.

message 5: by Char (new)

Char (CharmaineElaine) I cry at a lot of books

The first book I cried at was Vicky Angel by Wilson Jacqueline (view spoiler)

I also cried at Before I Die by Jenny Downham
(view spoiler) Awesome book. Any other year and it would have been my best of the year but I read Between Shades of Gray by Ruta Sepetys and that one just blew my mind.

Awesome topic BTW Tara =D

message 12: by Jeshu (new)

Jeshu (jeshusauria) I'm the kind of person that doesn't cry easily. I think that the first book that made me cry was Primavera en Natales (Spring in Natales, a book by a local author that probably isn't even translated to english xD) in sixth grade, and then I cried again with Dumbledore's death...like five years later!
I don't know why I've been so sensitive lately. Even Coraline made drop a few tears when I finished (!).

message 13: by Char (new)

Char (CharmaineElaine) I didn't cry at Harry Potter. I liked the series but I never really got the hype that surrounded it.

Oooh yeah I cried at Dumbledore's death. I cried in Black Beauty as well when Ginger's being taken to be turned into glue.

I hated Harry Potter at first. I only started loving it with The prisoner of Azkaban, which is my favourite book of the series.

All the Georgia Nicolson books make me cry... but they are tears of laughter and not tears of sorrow. Still, a book hilarious enough to make my laugh so much I cry? That's rare!

(Starts with Angus, Thongs and Full-Frontal Snogging written by Louise Rennison.)

Also, Jeshu, you're almost certain to cry at the end of Shadow Kiss then! Even I almost cried there!

message 23: by Maria (new)

Maria Skywalker | 3 comments Oh man, first book that made me cry (that I remember) was The Last Wolf of Ireland. So sad!

More recently it was Inkspell and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

Out of the Ashes by Michael Morpurgo . It's about the foot and mouth epidemic in England. I was about 12 at the time so I'm old enough to remember all the images from TV and this brought back all the memories. (view spoiler)

message 27: by [deleted user] (new)

The first book that made me cry when I was a kid was The Fox Cub Bold (Farthing Wood, #4) by Colin Dann . I was really heartbroken - a book had never affected me that way before - my mum was a little bit concerned.

Now it's very rare that I cry at books but Finding Sky by Joss Stirling recently got me very close at one point.

It is DEFINITELY worth reading. It's a very intense book. It's almost as if you know you don't like what you're about to "see" but you can't just look away from it.
The book is really gripping.
I recommend it, but be warned: You will cry your eyes out.

I second this. I gave The Book Thief to my mum a few years ago and she hasn't read it yet. I'm constantly hounding her to read it. It's a very emotional story and it's so well written that you get pulled into it all before you know what's happening.

I will add it to my 'to-read' list and make sure I have a big box of tissues at the ready when I get to it. :)

Thankfully, these were all happy cries :)

I still remember the first book that made me cry. It was Privilege by Leona Blair I bawled like a baby when my favorite character died!

I heard a lot of readers cried at The Time Traveler's Wife. I read her other book, Her Fearful Symmetry by Audrey Niffenegger , though and hated it so I doubt I'll ever read anything else by her.

Nicholas Sparks always makes me cry. Can't wait for his new one to come out. He's just finished the manuscript.

message 43: by Adva (last edited Aug 08, 2011 06:50PM) (new)

Adva (advak) These are the two that made me cry The Notebook by Nicholas Sparks A Walk to Remember by Nicholas Sparks . I don't cry so much from books. Washington Square by Henry James came pretty close, too.

I do get misty eyed quite a bit, to a ridiculous extent. Happens in movies, too. I'm probably the only ditz in the world that gets misty eyed over action movies because it's so emotional when they finally kiss *sniff, sniff* (I kid you not).

message 45: by Lara Ruark (new)

Lara Ruark okay, i'm going to have to read the book thief now!!

i rarely cry at books but these got me:

The Five People You Meet in Heaven by Mitch Albom The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini Wringer (Summer Reading Edition) by Jerry Spinelli Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (Harry Potter #7) by J.K. Rowling

and the librarian read this to my class and i started crying...
Two Bobbies A True Story of Hurricane Katrina, Friendship, and Survival by Kirby Larson it's a kids book, but this dog & cat are found after surviving hurricane katrina & they realize that the dog ended up saving the cat and they couldn't be separated. true story....(i'm not giving away the reason they found out about the dog....)

I read The Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger and loved it. There was one bit at the end that got me choked up. Then I read Her Fearful Symmetry by Audrey Niffenegger and didn't like it much at all - it's nothing like The Time Traveler's Wife.

A lot of Nicholas Sparks novels being mentioned here as weepies. I've only read one - Safe Haven by Nicholas Sparks - but I didn't really enjoyed it, which has put me off reading any others. The film of The Notebook made me cry though!

I shall consider giving it a go then. :) But I'm not sure whether I've heard too much bad about it (such as the relationship being presented as boarderline paeophilic as he's grooming Claire to be his wife as of a very young age) to really enjoy it. At least I know that Her Fearful Symmetry was just bad.

message 48: by [deleted user] (new)

Rea wrote: "(such as the relationship being presented as boarderline paeophilic as he's grooming Claire to be his wife as of a very young age)"

Yikes, I've never heard that idea of it before. I can see how some might view it that way but because of the style of the story, flitting back and forth through time, I didn't feel that way and it never seemed creepy (unlike Her Fearful Symmetry).

Whenever a book gets really hyped up the reviews end up covering such a broad range of opinion I sometimes find it impossible to decide whether to read it or not, or, like you say, I get worried my enjoyment of it will be tainted, like I will be looking out for flaws other people have mentioned. I usually end up just doing it out of morbid curiosity, as I did with Fallen (Fallen, #1) by Lauren Kate , to see what all the fuss is about. (There's a few hours of my life I'll never get back!)

I definitely won't be and that is actually really rare for me. I usually want to see something through to the end just to get closure but I can't bring myself to do it with the Fallen series. I can't remember another character I've ever disliked as much as Luce.
