Hi, GR addict here. I can't believe how much I love this site, nor that I've been here less than a year and a half. I read just about anything from non-fiction to picture-books to sci-fi but I do like my books to make me think a bit, rather than pure escape. My youngest is a teen so I have more time to read now, thank goodness (since I get so many recommendations from y'all for more books!). He is on goodreads but he doesn't read, or review, as much as I'd like to see him do. Still, he reads a lot more than most of his friends do, so ok. :)
I grew up in rural Middle America but I'm starting to appreciate the more frequently sunny days of northern Nevada. I'm also into geocaching, family & party games like Scrabble, Cranium, and Apples to Apples, and I have an OBCZ for bookcrossing.com.
Oh, and here on GR I run the group Fans of Maps. I'd love for you to join us if you're looking for another group about maps, travel, armchair travel, geocaching, etc....
Thanks Cheryl. It's great that your son is on Goodreads. I'll be encouraging my 12 year old grandson to sign up soon. The other evening, he phoned me up looking for recommendations on novels dealing with Greek mythology. The next day when he came over, we searched out the novels that he would enjoy.
Just a heads-up - because of laws meant to protect the privacy and safety of children, GR doesn't let kids have their own accounts until age (I think) 14.Thinking... Probably the best workaround is that you set up an account that he can only access when you type in the password, and you use the username "Janice&Jared" or something like that. Then when he's old enough, the account & profile details can be changed to be his very own.
After all, there are a lot of naughty profile pictures, and swear words in reviews, etc, that you might not want him to access unsupervised! :)
Thanks for the information, Cheryl. "Soon" for me would be a couple of years down the road anyway. I don't think he's old enough right now.
My daughter just set up an account on GR--she's 18 and about to head off to college. I was thinking yesterday it may end up being another fun way to stay connected with her while she's gone. "Whatcha reading now?"
I hope it works out for you Sandy! My college son 'doesn't have time' (he says). Girls are probably different. So, we know you have a daughter ready for college. Anything else you want to say to introduce yourself? :)
Hi Judy - I've put a couple of those 'simple life' books on my shelves but haven't read any good ones yet. I'll be looking at your shelves, maybe I'll start following you.

Huh. Thought I'd already introduced myself but I will admit to losing track of which thread I'm in when!
I've got two kids--my son is going into his third year in college, daughter (as mentioned before) going into her first. My two dogs will love all the undivided attention they'll get when we're temporarily empty-nesting! I work full time and travel a fair amount for work so I love having my Kindle loaded with a ton of books--different books for different moods. I'm a quiltmaker and a quilty-podcaster (link in my profile). One of my listeners turned me onto GoodReads and I am SO GLAD she did! I was in a bit of a reading wasteland for awhile--difficulty finding new authors I liked. Now I've got a ton of books on my GR to-read shelf and all the books I've read based on everyone's reviews here, I've really enjoyed! So, thanks!
Hi everyone. I'm Carrie. I love all kinds of books and am loving GR. I'm a mom of two (10 & 8) who aren't the biggest readers and I hope one day to change that.
Welcome Tabi and Carrie. I hope that you enjoy the group. Our monthly reads are a cross section of all genres. Our challenges are geared towards encouraging all types of reading.
Hi, I'm Julia. I read all kinds of books. I have inherited a lot of Reader' Digest condensed books from my aunt and mother which I have thoroughly enjoyed reading, especially since it usually cuts out the cuss words and offensive sexual scenes. I hate it when I'm reading a book with a great storyline (especially a mystery) and it has a cuss word every time the character speaks. I loved Centennial, but that was one reason I haven't picked it back up.
Hi Julia! Welcome to our group. We're a pretty tame lot here and you won't have to worry about inappropiate language here. :)
Hello! my name is Jiwoon Choi and I'm a Korean student (senior in an International Academy) preparing to study abroad in the US. I've lived in Indiana for 2 years in kindergarten and for 4 more years from 4th to 7th grade, so I guess I'm fluent enough in English. I've also taken the AP tests for AP Language and English Literature this May, waiting for the results now :)My parents always encouraged me to read a lot of books- every birthday present, Christmas present, basically every present for the holidays were books... which is probably why I love spending time in the library.
I don't have a lot of free time to read, but I try to grab a book every chance I get.
I hope I can learn a lot from this book club!! :)
Welcome Jiwoon. I hope you enjoy the group. There are varied tastes in books here that you can enjoy.
Hi everyone, my name is Karin, 30yo, from the Netherlands. I read mostly in English, I like fantasy, chick lit and general fiction, recent Kindle owner and loving it, it got me back into reading. I've just updated my profile for more on me & reading, so have a peek there if you like.

Hi Karin. So impressed that you can read fiction in another language. I'm always bowled over by the language skills of people from the Netherlands whenever I visit there. Needless to say my Dutch is non-existent.
Thank you Janice, for your welcome!Hey Allison, thanks for your comments. There's plenty of dutchies that are pretty good in several languages, I guess because Dutch is a rather uncommon language, but my skills do not go beyond English. My family went on holiday to the UK every year since I was 2 so I spent quite a lot of time there, and I started reading in English on those holidays. That combined with English/American TV and so on is how I got to be so fluent I guess, I find I can express myself better in English and it makes no difference to me which of the two languages I read in. Which makes a whole lot more literature available to me which is great :)
Hi all My name is Mervyn and I'm from Northern Ireland , my favourite books are - the book thief , a prayer for owen meany , Beloved , cloud atlas , freedom , to kill a mockingbird , the great gatsby , cloudstreet , a shirt history of nearly everything , a fraction of the whole , the road - if anyone in the group could recommend a book I would like judging from my favourites I would be most grateful !!
Hi All, My name is Marteen from London, England. I am new to goodreads and have no friends on here (someone be my friend) so I decided to make a start by joining a few groups. I havent the widest variety of books and have only just got back in the swing of reading again. My favourite book is Breaking Dawn (I am a sucker for all things Twilight) and have mainly SATC-ish books so am looking forward to the clubs monthly recommendations to break me out of my comfort genre. Any recommendations from you guys would be grateful as I am off on hols soon!!
Hi Mervyn. Welcome to our group. I have A Prayer for Owen Meany and To Kill a Mockingbird on my favorites list too. Have you tried any other of John Irving's books? There's A Son of the Circus, The Cider House Rules, amongst others of his that were really good.
Hi Marteen. Welcome to our group. Try our challenges to get you reading something outside of your usual choices. You might surprise yourself. Mervyn, you may enjoy the challenges as well.

Yes JaniceI've read both of those and 'Garp ' and the hotel new Hampshire and a widow for one year - enjoyed them all !
Hi, I have looked at the July Challenge as fun as it is the book I am currently reading doesn't grant me any points! Either that or I'm completely stupid and cant read instructions properly. Either way the challenges sound like a great way to get me started! Thank You!
Judy wrote: "@ Mervyn Have you looked through listopia, here on Goodreads? There are lists for everything imaginable as well as the most read fiction, etc."I was just hoping to get a more personal recommendation. I have quite a few 5 star books and was hoping that more committed readers might be able to personally recommend a book !!
Mervyn, I'm thinking that you may get a better response if you start a new thread asking for recommendations and put it in the "Recommendations" folder.

That's an excellent story. I've seen both the movie and read the book years ago. I don't think it would fit in with the Jun/Jul challenge, but could you use it for one of the months in the Year Long Challenge?

Hi Agnes and Jeremy! Welcome to our group. Currently, we are discussing The Hunger Games. We also have a monthly challenge ending July 31, and we just started a year long challenge. Enjoy!
Hi all. Just joined GR 2 or 3 days ago and my husband is already jealous of it;) haha. Needless to say, I love it already. I am a mom of two kids 6 yrs and 6mos. I read like crazy for the entire pregnancy and now am stuck in a reading rut. Anyone wanna cast a vote on which book will pull me out of it? I have 3 on my 2-read shelf. They are Water for Elephants, The Hunger Games, and A Visit from the Goon Squad. Please help! All input is welcome. Thanks Betsy
Hi Tori and BetsyJoJo. Welcome to our group! Since you are both new to Goodreads, you may find some helpful tips in our Goodreads 101 thread. We have some challenges that may interest you as well as our monthyly read which Judy has already mentioned. :)
Hi All..My name is Brittany. I am a SAHM to 2 little girls and have just re-found my love of reading. Looking on some great recommendations to read :-)
Hi Brittany! Welcome to our group. You'll find lots of choices here. If there is anything specific you are looking for, start a thread in the Recommendations section. :)
Hi everyone! My name is Victoria, I'm 20 & from Ilinois. :) I just signed up recently on GR and I am already ADDICTED! I love, love, love books, always have! I've been so busy with work and college that I've had a hard time finding time to read. However, that is changing because I can't stand to be away from books! Such a "nerd!" This past week i've already read the first 2 Sookie Stackhouse novels and I'm on to the 3rd today. Hope to talk to many of you soon! -Vee
