June 15 starts our read for Midnight Tides, where we travel to the realm of the Tiste Edur. This book starts a new plot thread that was hinted at by Trull Sengar-the shorn and thoughtful Edur who befriended Onrack.

We travel to a new continent-Lether, where the Edur, including Trull and his brothers, rule the North and the Capitalist humans of Lether habitate the South. How will the Crippled God affect the Edur views of their neighbors?

This is the book where we meet Tehol and Bugg..easily the most loved friendship of this entire series...

June 15-22 Prologue and Book 1 Frozen Blood Chapters 1-5

June 22-31 Book 2 Prows of the Day Chapters 6-11

July 1-7 Book 3 All That Lies Unseen Chapters 12-19

July 7-15 Book 4 Midnight Tides Ch 20-Epilogue

Amelia (narknon) | 523 comments Oooh, time to start the next Malazan book. Now I just need to finish the book I'm reading and then on to this. Should be ready by tomorrow (I hope anyway). I'm looking forward to getting back to these. I'm trying to get my brother to read Gardens of the Moon. He's borrowed the book, but I don't think he's started reading it yet. (He just got married a month ago, so he might have other things on his mind.)

I love the way SE moves us from House of Chains to Midnight Tides, at the end of HoC we have Trull starting to tell his story of how he ended up chained to the wall in the Nascent. So MT is going to take us back in time, to only bring us forward yet again! :)

Congrats to you brother Amelia, hopefully he gets a chance to read GotM soon!

Amelia (narknon) | 523 comments I'll keep encouraging him for sure. I think he'd really like them. He usually will take recs from me. Lately he's been reading stuff his wife recommended: Fablehaven and now he's thinking of reading Percy Jackson. Fluffy stuff compared to Malazan.

message 6: by Shelley (new)

Shelley (shelley69) | 597 comments Yes indeed very fluffy stuff compaired to SE, shoot for me now most books seem like chrildrens coloring books!! :)

message 7: by Amelia (new)

Amelia (narknon) | 523 comments Yes, but I certainly wouldn't give them to children for that purpose. Any book. I cringe to think what children, crayons and books would turn out like.

Shelley (shelley69) | 597 comments LOLLLLLLLLLL.....true scary thought!!!! :)

Sandra (sleo) | 1059 comments Hi, all, just peeking in to see how you're doing. Apologies for veering off topic, but Shelley, didn't you say you are or have been in the military? Just curious to ask if you've seen Restrepo? I watched it last night. Thought it was pretty gritty and gripping. And the photographer, Sebastian Junger was killed recently, I think in Libya. Very sad.

message 10: by Shelley (new)

Shelley (shelley69) | 597 comments Hey Sandra!! Yes I was in the U.S. Army and served as a MP, Sargeant type! I have not seen Restrepo, but will check it out on your recommendation!

Oh good. Let me know what you think. It's available from Netflix if you have that. I watched it in streaming video.

Lee (kiwifirst) Unless I can find a Warren of my own, I cannot imagine catching y'all up, being that I am 3/4 way thru book 2.

lol Lee-that is okay-I think everyone is behind at this point-especially with the holiday coming up. Join in on the posts you read!

Lee (kiwifirst) I am starting to think that Erikson's way with characters, makes RR Martin look like Enid Blyton.

lol-I love it!

message 16: by Lee (new)

Lee (kiwifirst) Time to introduce a new character? No, let's have a whole new race.
"Mappo lifted his head. 'Forkul Assail'
'the least known of the elder races, then. Not even hinted of in any Seven cities legend I've heard'.
....and that was that.

So I know somewhere in the next book I'll meet the Forkul Assail and I'll think I remember hearing about them, but won't remember where.

Welcome, love the comments Lee and just keep reading!!! :)

OT: GRRM is a fav of mine, his darkness and depth of character snagged me like many current fantasy authors, but how long it takes him to write a book....aaaaaahhhhh Gods torture!

message 19: by Lee (new)

Lee (kiwifirst) @ Shelley, I hear you. With so many books read in between Martins releases, I often feel like I am missing out on so much as I forget all the little detail.
Considering I can't write a 5 line rhyming verse, I can't really complain at how long it takes him. He probably spends a month trying to remember all his characters and who to kill next.

Hey Lee, I wish that was the case but GRRM has released several installments in his other series and comic books, so I feel no mercy on this subject!!! :( BUT I am grateful to the HBO series, it maybe the thing that motivated him to finish A Song of Fire and Ice!!

To swing this back to SE, I believe that SE was influenced by GRRM's aSoFaI and its epic scale! :D

Ben (bstanley52) | 39 comments Just finished House of Chains and I had a quick question about Shelley's comment in #4 up there.

Does Midnight Tides start before we see Trull in HoC?

I was looking at the Dramatic Personae and didn't see Onrack. Just trying to get my bearings before I start because I often get lost even when I know where I am in SE's books!

Thanks!

message 23: by Traci (new)

Traci Yes, the book starts before the moment we first met Trull.
One of my favorite characters. :)

Hey Ben!

In short, yes!

The longer answer is we meet Trull and Onrack in House of Chains, but Midnight Tides covers how Trull got chained to that wall for Onrack to find him in the first place. So MT goes backwards and then forwards!

MT is still on of my all time favorite SE book! It never fails to make me laugh, but I also liked how SE ends HoC with Trull telling his story to Onrack and MT then starts!

Shells:)
