you need to have a desire to be unique, not follow the crowd, and not give a SHIT what ppl think of you.......
just....BE YOURSELF!! as someone once said "Dance like no one's looking"....

At this point the goth subculture is so mainstream that being goth and unique are no longer synonymous terms.
I also disagree with the not following the crowd or not caring what others think. Don't most goths care what the scene is into? Don't most goths take their peer's opinions into account?

Absolutely, there are trends and fads that go on within the Goth scene. I think maybe those who are younger and still in high school probably don't have much access to the community as a whole, but yeah, stuff definitely gets tossed around in the community about what's acceptable or not.
Heck, when the Pastel Goth fad hit Tumblr, the whole scene was in a tizzy about whether it could really be called Goth or not. The consensus was mixed, naturally.
(You can read one of my short stories here if you'd like.)
But I wear rather plain clothes.
So I'm wondering--would any of you consider a person to be goth, if their lifestyle and world view is goth-esque but their outward appearance doesn't reflect that?
