You can add to this thread or create a new one if this one gets crowded.

I'm Kristen, one of the bloggers at The Book Monsters and love goodreads and thought the best way to create more discussions about books and whatnot was to create this group. Kate was on board and here we are.

I'm an elementary school librarian who blogs mostly about middle grade and YA books. :) I've been married for almost 2 years now and am starting my Masters degree in Library Science this fall. My favorite genres of fiction are Fantasy and Historical fiction.

message 2: by Zoraida (new)

Zoraida Hi! I'm a writer. My novel THE VICIOUS DEEP is slated for a March 2012 pub. from Sourcebooks Fire. It's about the return of the Sea Court to Coney Island, Brooklyn.

I live in NYC.

My favorite series is The Gemma Doyle Trilogy by Libba Bray. Then the Holly Black urban fairy tales.

Currently behind reading and working on Book 2.

message 3: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl Landmark (clandmark) Thanks so much for the invite, Kristen! Sounds like this will be a good group for book discussions.

My name is Cheryl Landmark and I'm a hopeless bookaholic. I'm also the author of a young adult fantasy called Wind and Fire and have another book scheduled to be released in September 2011 called "Pool of Souls".

I have a young heart in a mature body because I love reading and writing YA fantasy! :)

My favourite genres are fantasy (adult and YA), mystery, suspense, thriller, urban fantasy, and paranormal. I also like some science fiction, such as Anne McCaffrey's Dragonriders of Pern, and I don't mind some romance in my fantasy reads, but I'm not a big fan of historical, western or modern romance.

Sounds great Zoraida! I can't wait to read it. I love the trend of mermaids in YA literature. I love both Libba and Holly's books as well. Thanks for joining us!

message 5: by Jessica (new)

Jessica (roses7184) Hello! I'm Jessica, a book blogger and all around bookish person! I blog about a very eclectic set of books, including children's, manga, and historical fiction. My favorite genre without a doubt though is Fantasy/Science Fiction.

Give me a High Fantasy with sweeping worlds, unforgettable characters, and epic action and I'm lost to the world.

Welcome Cheryl and Jessica! Thanks for joining us on the group. Looks like you're both wide readers and I can't wait to see some of the books you guys are reading. Please vote on our first group read in the polls section. Next month we'll have nominations for book titles as well. :)

message 7: by Paige (new)

Paige Kinnaird (paige928) My name is Paige Kinnaird and I am a high school English teacher. This year, following advice from many education experts and reading books on the topic, I instituted 15 minutes of daily reading time in each of my classes. I am proud to say my high school students read over 600 books. I have challenged myself to read 100 books this year (2011) and have focused much of my reading on YA books that I can book talk with my students.

message 8: by Kristen (new)

Kristen Harvey | 160 comments Mod
Wow Paige! What an accomplishment! I'm a big reader, but I did feel like in high school it lapsed for a while, so it's a great way to get students reading to incorporate it in such a way. I love how you've challenged yourself to read more of what they are reading as well and what a fantastic role model you must be to your students. I can't wait to see what you've been reading and enjoying! Thanks for joining us!

Kevin McGill | 1 comments Thanks for the invite! This looks like my kind of group. Frankly, the banner on the blog totally sells it.
And yes, now for the shameless plug. But hey, you gotta tell people what you love:
I'm an adventure fantasy author publishing my first book through Aero Studios this Fall. You see, I believe the Moon is more than a dead, lunar satellite. In fact, I believe it used to be the cradle of a magical civilization. Hence: Nikolas and Company: A Creature Most Foul. Stephanie | 4 comments Hi-I'm Stephanie at Bookworm1858 I've been blogging for almost two years and mostly about YA books although I do read other genres. I'm a huge fan of goodreads and I'm really excited about this opportunity to discuss books. I'm not sure what my favorite genre is but I love books with an element of romance, whether or not it's the main focus.

Kimberly (kimberlybuggie) Hi everyone!
I'm Kimberly and I'm a book blogger. When I'm not reading, knitting, writing or dreaming about any of those things, I work in the music industry.
I love YA, fiction, romance. I have a lot of cookbooks but don't really cook ;)

Jan von Harz (jan_eatingyabooks) | 9 comments Salutations,

Thanks Kristen for the invite and a huge wave to everyone. My name is Jan and I am a book blogger, (Eating YA Books)and an eighth grade communication arts teacher.

While I love most genres I am specifically fond of YA and rarely read any other genre these days.

Looking forward to being a part of the Book Monsters.

Welcome Jan! It is great to have you here.

message 22: by Eden (new)

Eden Silverfox (tsalagi_writer) I'm Eden and I'm a writer of Cherokee descent. When I'm not writing my book trilogy, or reading, I like to play video games, watch TV and travel. I also like to blog, spend time on message boards, and of course spend time on Goodreads.

I usually read YA and fantasy, but I'm pretty open to any genre and will read whatever book sounds interesting to me.

message 23: by Coranne (new)

Coranne | 9 comments Hi there! I am Coranne and I am also a teacher (I see a reoccurring theme in this thread. I taught Elem. and Pre-K, but now I am a stay at home mom and tutor from my house. I blog about books and read a huge mix of genres (except for zombies... I. hate. zombies.)
I love any retelling of Fairy Tales- Wildwood Dancing is one of my favorites! I love the Mortal Instruments and love YA fiction. I read in an article online somewhere that YA fiction tends to not have the graphic elements that adult books have- so the plot has to be better to make up for it... I agree! I love YA for that very reason!

It is nice to meet all of you!

message 24: by Kristen (new)

Kristen Harvey | 160 comments Mod
I love video games too Eden, though not as much as my lovable husband. Welcome to the group!

Amanda, it's so great to see so many teachers joining us! But no zombies? I guess they aren't for everyone. :) I love fairy tales as well. Thanks for joining us!

message 25: by [deleted user] (new)

message 27: by Jacalyn (new)

Jacalyn | 73 comments I'm Lady Ozma just about everywhere except FB which is stupid and says that's not a real name. And possibly G+ which hasn't decided yet. I'm an avid reader, and I'm working on several novels that would be closer to being done if I could get over my "I hate to edit" hangups.

Mostly I read. Anything and everything. Even ingredient labels. But after that I really like all things remotely speculative in nature (old school would call it scifi/fantasy), mysteries (especially cozy's), and I suppose the YA should go without out saying. :)

When I'm not reading or writing, I'm praying for a freelance photography/journalism job or filling my eyes with tv/movies while playing loads of video games. I'm often trying to fight the urge to flip between my social games, book, tv, and WoW. To further aid in my "less not multitask as much" I keep my gameboy in another room.

Happy Monday everyone! I gotta get back to work on these photos from the weekend!

message 28: by Kristen (new)

Welcome Lady Ozma! Sounds like you have a lot going on! :) Glad to see another reader/gamer on here. :)

message 29: by Kathy (new)

Kathy (readr4ever) | 1 comments Thanks for the invite to this group, Kristen. Looks like a great group (love the group banner)!

I read all levels and genres, from children's through adult. I especially love mysteries and historical fiction. I'm a former English teacher and have my Masters in Library Science (library media, to be exact). I am planning on reopening a blog I started a couple of years ago, but I wasn't pleased with it and need to tweak it. I will provide the link after my tweaking. Anyway, happy to be here in Book Monsters!

message 30: by Jacalyn (new)

Jacalyn | 73 comments Kristen, there's always a lot going on. :) Such is life! Go gamer gurls!

message 31: by Anne (new)

Anne Tibbets The Beast Call

Hi! I'm YA fantasy author Anne Tibbets. Any bloggers who want a complimentary e-copy of my books, email me at annetibbetsauthor@gmail.com - I'd be happy to do it!
This group is such a good idea, and I feel privileged to have been invited.

message 32: by Kristen (new)

Thank you Cathy and Anne for joining us! :)

And Lady Ozma - totally go Gamer Girls! Although I play a ton less than my husband. And mainly RPGs. I was waiting for summer for Dungeon Siege III to come out and it was awful on PC *sigh* made me sad. Wish I had bought it on the Xbox 360, but such is life.

message 33: by Jacalyn (new)

Jacalyn | 73 comments What games do you play? I'll admit that I only use my XBox these days for dance games. And while I just got the latest WoW expansion, I haven't loaded it and played yet. Been busy for the last month!

I'm really basic, I've played Neverwinter Nights, Spellforce 2, Fate, Torchlight, Dungeon Siege, Black & White, and Civilization on computer. Then on Xbox I play mostly the Lego games. I'm not very good on console and my hubby won't play with me as much, so that's pretty minimal. I used to play Dungeon Runners online which was a fun, free MMO. But I can't keep my attention long enough on MMOs.

message 35: by Jacalyn (new)

Jacalyn | 73 comments OK I love those lego games. I like consoles OK but I'd rather game while watching tv. :) Though I suppose I could game while listening to audiobooks. Hmmm, something to think about to help me with my reading list! HEHE But I can't keep my attention on the games anyway. I do much better with MMOs because of the community. I must just be too chatty or social or something. :)

Though I'm kind of thinking about this whole audiobook thing. I have like 100 audiobooks that I never get to listen to... WHy am I not listening now????

message 36: by Kristen (new)

Kristen Harvey | 160 comments Mod
Lol. Lego games rock. :) I've never been a big tv person, we actually now just dvr our few shows and watch them when we're in the mood now. THank god for DVR.

I use audiobooks a lot to do menial tasks like dishes, scrubbing the bathroom, etc. I also have been updating a bunch of mindless stuff on my blog so I use audiobooks for that too. :) They're great.

message 37: by Jacalyn (new)

Jacalyn | 73 comments I only DVR. I can't stand commercials. I used to read during them. Now i can skip them and read before or after the show. Kind of nice to not get to a point in a book where you really don't want to stop but need to so you can know what happens next on the show! :)

I think the DVR was the greatest add-on invention for the TV. :)

I love audiobooks but have found it hard to listen to them due to the proximity of kids. All. The. Time. I swear that as soon as I start to listen to one it's interruption after interruption. I can sit here and read the news or a book quietly for two hours straight but if I start an audiobook forget it. It's frustrating. I really do have somewhere around 100 audiobooks that I've never listened to because of that.

message 38: by Kristen (new)

Kristen Harvey | 160 comments Mod
DVR is the greatest. :)

And yeah, kids would be a problem. It's only me and the hubby, and he only interrupts every once in a while. :)

message 39: by Jacalyn (new)

Jacalyn | 73 comments Yeah, that will be me in a few short years. I'm not sure what I'll do with myself. LOL Maybe read 3 books a day like my mother. (Which is why I have so many books. They are 90% hers. And then she's like "What do you mean you haven't read that yet? I gave it to you two years ago? I've read 600 books since then." LOL Must be nice, right?) Seriously, it took me 6 months to get through an audiobook once. I did just finish one last week in the same week I started it, but I also drove 800 miles in said week. :)

message 40: by Sarah (new)

Sarah Maddaford (smadddaford) | 1 comments Hi, I'm Sarah a public librarian in a small town in Texas. I don't have an official book blog, but I do review almost everything I read and I try to keep up with what's popular for YA since that is my section at the library. I only started a year ago, but I just finished my first summer reading program and I am still loving it.
I'll try just about any genre, series, author and format at least once. I love audio books and almost constantly have on in my car. I mostly read YA books, but I try to make time for my biggest love which is any kind of Sci-Fi or Fantasy.

message 41: by Kristen (new)

Kristen Harvey | 160 comments Mod
Welcome Sarah! Yay for summer reading! :)I'm a big fan of Sci Fi and Fantasy as well, but it's hard to find time to read adult when there's such good YA coming out. I'm behind on a lot of my adult series.

Ozma - man I wish I could read 3 books a day. I will be one of those old ladies when I grow up I hope. :)

message 42: by Jacalyn (new)

Jacalyn | 73 comments Welcome Sarah! I look forward to seeing what you bring to us!

Kristen - yeah I hear ya. Only way I can read 3 books a day is if I go graphic novels. But I do have like 11 volumes of Vampire Knight here. Maybe I should see how many I can read tomorrow. HAHA

message 43: by Kristen (new)

Kristen Harvey | 160 comments Mod
True true. Graphic novels are quick. Finished two already today. :)

Dee (goodreadscomdeetopa) Hello!

My name is Dee, and I am a book-a-holic!! I will graduate in August with my Master's in Library Science, and I am currently (feverishly) searching for a library position.

I love to read mostly YA, with a random historical fiction thrown in!

Kristen, where will you be completing your master's at?

message 45: by Kristen (new)

Kristen Harvey | 160 comments Mod
Congrats Dee!

I will completing it through Olivet-Nazarette University, which has a cohort near me. :) It's through their education department, so it's more focused on Library Media Specialists. :)

message 46: by Jacalyn (new)

Jacalyn | 73 comments @Kristen - Wow great! I'm reading one now. I've got the final one in the series set to read after I'm done with this one. But I waited till I finished my Pepper Martin book before starting the graphics. I haven't bought Cowboys and Aliens yet, but I'm thinking about it. Surely I can read these two plus that today. :)

@Dee - I'm a book-a-holic too! :)

message 47: by Dee (new)

Dee (goodreadscomdeetopa) @Kristen, that is awesome! I could not recommend a better masters (and yes I am saying that even though I am unable to find a position right now) :0)

I'm on my third year as a Library Media Specialist and loving it. Starting to get excited about this upcoming year, as we finally will have a tech teacher, so I can concentrate more on library skills. Yipeee!

message 49: by Emily (new)

Emily (yabookgrl1981) Hi my name is Emily and I love reading. I'm a medical biller for a large company. I'm also a wife to an amazing husband, and a mommy to the cutest little boy in the world (at least in my opinion...lol). My little boy is six months old so I don't have nearly as much time as before to read but still try to sneak in a few pages every day.

I read mainly young adult - all types - but find myself mainly drawn to the vampire/werewolve stuff. I've been trying my hand at a few dystopian and fantasy and finding I really enjoy them also!

I originally found The Book Monsters thru a weekly meme they particpate in and fell in love with their header. I was super excited to see a goodreads group! Thanks so much for having me!!

message 50: by Jacalyn (new)

Jacalyn | 73 comments I like your reading prefs, Emily! :)

And I found the Book Monsters because I was invited to this group! :)
