For the next 2 days, the administrator of "Share Term Papers" is attempting to encourage authors to voluntarily negotiate away some of their copyright in exchange for promotion and a Donate button on his file-sharing site.

The discussion is heated.

Yes, I did. Facebook appears to tolerate the publication of their solicitations to infringe copyright on the group's Facebook page, also.

Part of the problem copyright owners face today is the widespread tolerance of copyright infringement by OSPs such as Facebook, Google, Yahoo, Social Go, and other hosting sites.

The Safe Harbor provisions of the DMCA go way too far, in my opinion.

L.J. DeLeon (LJDeLeon) | 27 comments Wonder if we can't use the FBI cyber crimes & ICE by claiming these big OSPs function as fences thus facililating a criminal enterprise.

Linda,

The FBI doesn't make laws. If there is a bad law, or a law with a loophole, they cannot rectify it.

A judge might interpret the law in a landmark case, but someone with bags of money would have to launch a test case.

Larry Moniz (larrymoniz) | 57 comments That's a scary site, both from an intellectual rights piracy standpoint and the comments by Atish, which I interpret as thinly veiled threats. English is not his native language and something about it makes me think Soviet Bloc speech patterns. When the Soviet Union broke up, many former KGB types with cyber skills reportedly formed a Russian mob to exploit cyber crime and espionage for fun and profit--mostly profit.
Suggest treading carefully when even visiting that site.

Google is one of the biggest copyright infringers based on six-year-old lawsuit by the AAP and the Authors Guild.

Larry, I agree with you. Atish said that he is Iranian. He is also 15 years old.

I'm not aware of much discussion about the effect of piracy on minors, but it is certainly likely that children are able to view movies online (free) while they would never be able to attend owing to X, R, and PG ratings, even in the most liberal countries.

Children can probably access erotica, porn, horror, and other matter which is considered too controversial even for Amazon to sell without any parental guidance.

Ones concern is not solely about money.

Rowena, there's no way to know if he's really a 15-year-old or even Iranian. That could be a smokescreen. There are several locations in Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union where Internet crime, including scams, is the biggest industry in the community. Some are even organized mob operations.

Best,
