What do you use for a bookmark?

I used to just use whatever scrap of paper was convenient, an old receipt, a piece of homework I no longer needed or whatever. About a year ago I started using paperclips. They are wonderful! They almost never fall out, don't get bent up or lost and are reusable. The only stipulation I have is they have to be the plastic coated color ones otherwise they my rip a page.

I use a magnetic bookmark that clips over the pages I love it cause it never falls out and works well as a marker for the next chapter as i tend to read in chapters.
Bookmarks my kids have made in school, the library receipts, a thing from the bank with the pin number on it, junk mail, LOL, whatever is around & handy at the time!
I hope this isn't going to turn into another discussion of that ancient relic of bookmarks printed with the author's name, etc. All they do is waste an author's money and line the pockets of printers. Almost anything including a piece of string will work as a bookmark.
I actually have tons of bookmarks that I keep in a high school mug of mine. I love having different types so I have like the typical paper ones, the plastic ones, fancy ones and one that looks like a cat. But I also use receipts from my bedside table if I'm too lazy to go scrounge for the perfect bookmark. I've used post it notes as well, but I have to be careful with those because every now and then you find a stubborn one that insists on leaving the stickiness behind.
Haha that's a good question! Anything that's handy - pieces of paper, my cellphone, my comb, my finger lol!

I travel quite a bit with my books and it's annoying when the bookmark falls out. I have some fancy ones with beads and stuff hanging off and these tend to get stuck in my bag making me lose my place. The metal ones stay on nicely.
I'm glad to hear that everyone is using some kind of bookmark! It drives me absolutely crazy if someone folds down the corner of the page to mark his or her place. *eye roll* It shows a lack of respect for those most precious tomes, in my opinion.Recently, I've been using a very pretty plastic bookmark given to me by a neighbour for my birthday. I have also used paper bookmarks, tissues or scraps of paper.
Right now, I have an actual bookmark. A little kid gave it me as promotion for their theatre club. :)Before, my "bookmarks" were used up metro cards, those free song cards from Starbucks, or a calling card.
I keep all my author bookmarks because some of them are really pretty. And I use them. But I have to honestly admit, I don't believe I've ever read an author because of a bookmark.

Folded corners are the worst! There are several people I will not lend books to because they abused my books by folding pages.
Jackie wrote: "I HATE folded down corners, especially in library books. This is a major pet peeve with me. I recently had such a book from the library and I was totally frustrated.
Omgoodness, it's something about folding the pages on books, drives me nuts!! lol, and I get so upset if I put something on top of my book in my bag and it crushes all the pages......let me stop, because I'm just going to get annoyed.
I used to use whatever is handy
and then I brought a really nice metal bookmark that says something about dreams and I love it!!
...until that piece of crap falls out of the book, so essentially, it's kind of useless. Very nice though.
Then I drew on an index card and use that
and since I'm reading more than one book at the moment, lol, I've been using these origami double windmills to keep as a book mark. Is there anyway to post pictures here? I can't really explain it. It looks like a windmill with eight peaks, and then it can slide open into a hexagon. Fun to make XD
My favourite bookmark is one made in Hardanger embroidery by my ex-daughter-in-law/friend. It is in the same colours as my sofa ;-) I also like the one that says "Keep Calm and Carry on" to remind me not to panic about things. I tend to have a lot of bookmarks because people know I read a lot and therefore give them to me as gifts. Even so , I have been known to use a convenient scrap of paper.
I actually buy bookmarks from the bookstore, hahaha. I have quite a collection of them and use those all the time. I only use pieces of paper/anything else when I have to.
I used to have a lot of bookmarks but I've moved so much I think they are lost somewhere in a box. But lately, since I've been studying so much for school, I've been using notecards as bookmarks.
I'm a bit like Michelle, I have a ton of bookmarks many of which were bought for me. Mostly leather from Heritage Houses. Some are plastic with cute pictures etc. But then I tend to grab clothes tags, bus passes etc. What are author book marks?
I have two that I'm using right now. Unfortunately, they both have those silly tassels that I end up catching on things and pulling the bookmark out of the book. They have sentimental value so I can't bring myself to remove the tassels but that's the price you pay for being sentimental. ;)
I have a few with tassels myself, but they don't last very long. One was eaten by the dog, another is in the process of unraveling, the last one is expensive so I try not to use it in excess.
When I see dog-eared books from the library, I wonder who the heck does this?! I own a few pretty bookmarks, one has a tassel that's a bit annoying. Usually, I have more than one book going on now so I end up grabbing whatever piece of paper that's handy, sometimes even a slim coaster.

Although I'm a professional writer, my favorite bookmark is the dog-ear. Guess I don't have the proper respect for pieces of paper just because they convey thoughts. Oh, wait, the most promising one that likely will outlast all the others is the electronic one that comes with an EBook reader. ;-)
Ah-ha! Thank you Larry for satisfying my curiosity :) That's what I love about my e-reader, the ability to dog-ear without leaving lasting marks, and they can be removed if needed, and added back, etc. Plus, they're so cute. I love the bookmarking, the highlighting and note-taking capabilities also. My stack of little post-its can sit and collect dust for a bit (I use them a LOT while reading traditional paper).
Well, usually I read on my Nook and use that bookmark. Otherwise, I used to have a magnetic bookmark that I loved. Scraps of paper are good when I have nothing else...
I used to use ones with fringe, and I once bought a book by diedre knight cause of her free bookmark, but I ended up not really liking her writing style, now I just use the free ones from the library.
used to go the occasional piece of paper route, but lately I've stumbled upon a stack of bookmarks in one of my books. It's the store promotion ones, that they occasionally stick in the book when you buy it. I guess one of those time they stuck a few more than necessary (I have like five from the same purchase...of a single book). So I use them now.I find that the thin ones - either improvised from a stray paper or is the bought heavy paper ones - if they are stuffed well into the book, they tend to stay there. It also depends on the binding.
Paper clips work great. But usually I am so lazy I just look at the page number, and set the book down open.
It's changed a few times over the years. For a long time I'd just not bother with anything and would memorize the page number. Seeing as how I would read several books at once, this usually wasn't the greatest. Then I used clothing tags and receipts, but they were always falling out. Finally I started collecting bookmarks (people would give them to me, they'd come with books, or I'd grab the ones at the library, especially the one I volunteered at for a while) and now mainly use those. That is, when I'm not reading my kindle, which saves it for me!
i use business cards. the never fall & since i have tons of them, they can be replaced without a fuss.
I use playing cards or little folded up bits of paper. My younger brothers draw pictures for me and then fold them up so I can use them as a bookmark.
Anna wrote: "I use a magnetic bookmark that clips over the pages"I use this style also. I have all kinds of different ones, including coffee! HelloKitty, Ladybugs, flowers, and some older cardboard ones (the whole surface is not a magnet), one with a wolf and one with a coyote.
I have one of the shepherd's crook type, which is beautiful, but ALWAYS falls out of the book, so mostly it sits in my pencil cup.
I don't like regular paperclips because they crinkle the page. And I don't like crinkly pages.
I have a bookmark from the bookstore that has a string attached with a bead at the end of it. The picture is tied into the book
.
I make a lot of my own bookmarks. They're nice small projects to stitch when I'm on the go and I always seem to need more because I'm forever losing them. I'm sure the library must have a lovely collection of them by now.
I get a handful of bookmarks from the library. My job has given us some bookmarks. If I don't have a bookmark around, I will use a piece of paper, coupon, or fold the page, which I haven't done that in a long time.
Cheryl...do you cross-stitch your bookmarks? Do you have to buy special bound pieces of linen or Aida or do you just cut them yourself from scraps? If the latter, how do you bind them to stop them from fraying? I'd like to make some but haven't figured this part out.

Yeah. I can Completely identify w/ruining pages in books but to be honest; if the book was cheap, cheap, cheap.. it no longer bothers me.. It's the 1's I spend 40 or more on, I would totally freak about
one of those perfume strips...i spray one with perfume at the store..then use it asa book mark....so i now have books smelling of Acqua di Parma, Chloe and Chanel no 19.....

I like that idea! Then whenever you open your book... it smells pretty! lol

The idea sounds fine, but here's a caveat. People with asthma or Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease who get within 10 feet of that book in a public place could easily have a respiratory attack. As someone with 50 lung capacity, please keep those bookmarks confined to private areas like home rather than buses, trains or waiting rooms. PLEASE!
Larry wrote: "J.D. wrote: "Adrienne wrote: "one of those perfume strips...i spray one with perfume at the store..then use it asa book mark....so i now have books smelling of Acqua di Parma, Chloe and Chanel no 1..."I agree with Larry. If I get a magazine with a perfume page I have to tear it out and put it right into the recycling outside the house. Getting into an elevator with someone who has just sprayed liberally with perfume is really hard.
