Around the World in 80 Books discussion

Read a book from each of the fifty U.S. states (Washington DC optional) in one calendar year. The 2024 challenge will begin January 1, 2024 and end December 31, 2024. Anyone can join in at any time. No need to read state books in geographical order (unless you want to!).

Reporting: Please start a new topic with your name. You will make all updates under your own thread. Important: You must make a new post with each new addition, bringing your thread to the top of the list. I am unable to tell when a post is edited, and you may subsequently not receive credit for all the books you have read.

Starting in the 2013 challenge - Washington DC will be counted as a state (reading it is optional)

I will be doing this challenge again, for my third year. I really like this one, and it keeps me reading a lot of different things. I was happy that I was able to complete it in 2011, and at present am only two books away from completing it in 2012.

I'm planning to continue my USA roadtrip from last year as I didn't get the whole way around (and maybe add some set in the different provinces of Canada to broaden my knowledge while my son is over there on a university exchange).

I am doing the Road Trip USA challenge, along with being a circumnavigator.
I have already done about 50% of the states, and recorded them within the Goodreads Allsorts Group, on my own. I will be transferring my books over here, now that I have found this group.

I have a question -- what do you do about books that are set in several different cities/states?

Can I start now for the 2014 challenge? And if I make a list with TBR books, do I have to stick to those or can I change them anytime I like?

There are two main challenge tracks:

The yearly challenge that started on 1/1/13 and finishes on 12/31/14. You can start this at any time after the year has started. You can count any books you have already read during this year. Your book count will reset at the beginning of 2014. You can count any of these books in the ongoing challenge (circumnavigator).

The ongoing challenge. You can start at any time and have no time limits. Your books can be carried over into next years count. It would probably be best for you to go into this track to count the books you are reading now for 2014.

You don't need to stick with your TBR list. You can change it as often as you like. That's part of the fun. I know what I end up reading usually looks quite different from my initial TBR!

BCs Rockies are gorgeous, with stunning bear and mosquito picture taking opportunities. High on my list of places to revisit, and I'd like to drive to Prince Edward Island again.

My fantasy voyage would be along the BC coast about 16,000 years ago and then again 8000 years later to see the remarkable changes. More realistically, were I 50 years younger, I like to take the trip Doig describes in Sea Runners.

I looked at this list, thank you for posting the link. I'm not sure I agree with their definition of "famous." I've lived in Delaware since 1982, and I've never heard of The Saint of Lost Things by Christopher Castellani. I'll most likely read Jack Rowe's Brandywine, one of those sweeping family sagas published in the 1980's. In this case, the series of novels is about the duPont family. I've volunteered at the Hagley Museum & Library for a number of years, so I plan to take pictures of the site to go with my posts about the novel.

How do I find books about different states? Like individual states?

That is up to you. However much you personally feel is enough to count.

I love a good reading challenge to encourage me to broaden my reading topics. I look forward to seeing how many states I can tick off this year!

Also, can a book count towards more than one state if location moves throughout?

Good morning! I am trying for a 50 book summer - reading one book from each state.

I am mostly going to be doing this project on Booklikes and on my blog, but I thought I would start a thread here as well.

The blog page where I will be indexing posts/information is here for anyone who is interested.

My goal is to go from May 1 to August 31. That's 12 books a month, which is pretty aggressive. I figure, though, I can bring in some YA/kids books if I start falling behind.

I'm going to start with a trip down Route 66 and knock out California, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Missouri, & Illinois first.
