The Mystery, Crime, and Thriller Group discussion

I discovered "Sherlock" streaming on Netflix and flat out loved it. I've watched and re-watched all episodes.

This is a purely selfish thread. I've got three more weeks of summer break (high school English teacher here) and I want to watch some more good mysteries that are currently streaming on Netflix. Please post your favorites here and accept my thanks in advance.

If you want a truly good mystery series from the UK and you don't mind that it's a bit older, I highly recommend A Touch of Frost. It was so well done I watched every single season within a couple of weeks. My husband, who doesn't like British TV, was as engrossed as I was. Not as good as Frost but still interesting is the George Gently series, also from the UK. I'm sure there are more, but do give the Frost a go.

Staying with the British shows I'd recommend Luther with Idris Elba and the Life on Mars series (only the BBC version as the US version had an absolutely awful ending) as well as Waking the Dead and MI-5 (called Spooks in the UK).

I agree wholeheartedly with Luther and the BBC version of Life on Mars. Another good older series is Wire in the Blood.

I'm not sure if these are available streaming on Netflix but.....

If you are looking for classic British series I would suggest Morse and then the new carry on of the series Inspector Lewis.

If you like courtroom drama there is Cavanaugh QC and the charming old classic Rumpole.

I saw a few episodes of a more recent courtroom drama, Judge Deed, and that was very good too.

I also have no idea if this series is on netflix or not, but I just finished watching "Jekyll". It's very good though it's not strictly mystery-it has mystery undertones. :)

You're welcome. Beyond the core mysteries and crimes in each episode, the characters run the show and they do it well. I really think you'll enjoy the series.

It isn't a mystery series, but nevertheless I highly recommend Downton Abbey, which is available right now for streaming on Netflix.

I've been watching the Midsommer Murders series on Netflix by disk but I now see they are available by streaming. Good series set in rural England.

The Midsomer Murder series is one of my all-time favorites. I'll have to see what's available for streaming -- I think I may have watched all of the DVDs though.

Watched a spoof programme about how to survive in the village of Midsummer, it was hosted by the doctor who appears in the series and poked fun at itself as a show.

Don't know if you can get it but Case Histories based on the Kate Atkinson books are brilliant. There's also Scott and Bailey.
Remember Robson Green when he played a hospital porter in Casualty years ago.

If "The Night Listener" is available on streaming, definitely get it. Toni Collette is, as always, brilliant and it's one of the best things Robin Williams has ever done. Not to mention its suspenseful and damn creepy, too.

Been watching The Killing, the danish version on BBC4 and it's brilliant. Missed two episodes but I managed to catch up on iplayer.

I love this series! I went through all the episodes Netflix currently streams and managed to find two I hadn't seen before. Now I'm watching some of the older ones. Even as repeats, they're fun to watch.

Also good is the George Gently series, and Netflix is streaming one season of the Inspector Lewis series.

Wallander, both the UK and the Swedish series are excellent. Also Vera is a good UK series. I wish I had more like these to watch.

I've heard the French series, Spiral, is pretty good.

I've been watching Borgia: Faith and Fear on Netflix streaming and really digging it. It's "the other Borgia" tv show. But this one has lots of sex and violence, which in spirit is probably the most accurate of the Borgia era of Italian politics. Admittedly, I felt John Doman's heavy American accent stood out a little with all the european accents...but then realized something...nobody has a uniform accent in this show. Everybody in the cast have unique accents, some Italian, some British, German, Polish, American, etc. etc. I think this show would probably be watched by non-English speakers and so either be dubbed or sub-titled and so that audience wouldn't necessarily be so focused on the accents like me. And that's when I gave myself over to the story and really enjoyed it.

sorry for the ramble, but I thought I would prepare a potential viewer for the accent thing because to me it was the one thing that stood out. But's a pretty darn good show.

I'm just back from my first experience with Netflix - really enjoyed the Netflix series House of Cards (remake I guess of the British series some years ago shown on PBS). This one was with Kevin Spacey. I really enjoyed those first 13 episodes. I will probably be signing up for Netflix shortly - after I figure out how to hook up Comcast's new modem and my new Blu-Ray set.

Also saw a couple of episodes of an old series - The Guardian. I never even heard of the series. But really liked the three episodes in the middle of the series that I saw.

The British series is still the best. "You might say that, but I couldn't possibly comment." Don't miss it!

Currently watching a Danish show, The Protectors. This one moves right along and gives you another perspective on the world. Just finished the first season and am ready to start then next one tonight!

I watched the first episode and liked it. Kevin Spacey and Robin Wright were quite excellent. But for me...it still pales in comparison to the original UK series with Ian Richardson. He was just so "arch" and diabolical, and dangerously ironic and clever. Brilliant series, that one.

I think as we were watching the 6th or 7th episode, I suddenly remembered the British series, which I had thoroughly enjoyed. We wound up watching the 13 episodes in 2-3 days - when we started watching it there were only about 3-4 days before I had to come home. We were marathon watching.

I, too, thoroughly enjoyed the British series.

And after I hook up the blu-ray I probably will sign up for Netflix, etc.

Foyle's War with Michael Kitchen is my fave. It's a detective/crime show that takes place during WWII in Hastings, England. Kitchen plays Detective Chief Superintendent Foyle, and he's brilliant. Great setting, cast, and writing.

I agree. Foyle's War is a great show.

I agree the very beginning was a little offputting. I remember thinking that there wasn't one likeable character. But I just got sucked into the story.

I think it's good that there aren't likeable characters. I think they could have gone in another direction in the beginning. Maybe they were concerned with competing with HBO & Showtime. I'll continue to watch this series.

Anyone checking out the series on HuluPlus. I've started watching Athena: Goddess of War and A Man called God. Great martial arts scenes, especially in Athenia: Goddess of War. There is another series called Killing Time that I'm going to check out today. Already saw the first episode of Ripper Street. Really enjoyed it.

I will definitely be connecting sooner or later (sooner than later now) because of this series.

I can't stream Netflix over my connection :/ However, I do get it via DVD, and I've lately been going through the "Dexter" TV series, which I'm enjoying somewhat uncomfortably.

Do you have Roku? This can be hooked up to your TV. One time charge of $50.

If you can't stream the Netflix connection, it may be because you don't have a strong enough router. Cisco Valet is good. I replaced my old one for that reason.

There's something called HULU. We watched a missed episode of Elementary. My husband hasn't mentioned any costs associated with it.

I had netflix but gave it up because it used up too much of my megabytes.

There are a ton of streaming movies on Netflix. I love it.
Terriers was good. MI5 was very good. Protectors was great.

It's my connection. We just got high-speed internet here last year, and it's the slowest high-speed rate. Plus, the connection is overloaded because they didn't put in enough for the number of people who want it. I live outside a town of 250 (not thousand - 250 period) and we're pretty low on the totem pole when it comes to utilities. I must say, this high-speed stuff is way better than dial-up!

Another vote here for Midsomer Murders. The first 13 seasons are on Netflix. I love the rural setting and the characters. Right now I've just started watching Wire in the Blood Took me 1/2 way through the first episode to get into it, but now, really good. A bit more gritty then Midsomer. My next will be Wallander.

House of Cards was great
Hemlock Grove was purposely bad fun
Orange is the New Black wasn't very good at all
Wallander the Swedish version was really good, the British version wasn't
Luther was great!
The Fall was twisted but really good!
The Man From Nowhere was a great foreign film
I saw the Devil will give you nightmares, it was intensely good, but extremely gory
The Thieves was a great caper movie

Good job, Rick!! I will look for some of these. I think some are on BBC and we may not get them all in America. Has anyone seen them all here I America???

I really liked the British version of Wallander - it's bleak, though - and I liked the British version of House of Cards better than the new one.

If Six Feet Inder is on there, I'd recommend highly..thought it was a great show

Lots of good stuff here! I second Terriers. Also State of Play, preferably the original six part British series, though the movie wasn't awful

I recently watched The Awakening on Netflix streaming. Great movie, perfect for October :) Side Effects was also good.
Also enjoyed Orange is the New Black, and the last couple seasons of Boardwalk Empire (had to catch up before the new one started).

I saw awakenings and I'm not sure I liked it as much as I could have if the ending wasn't just a little better. But I do think Boardwalk Empire has been really good over the last few years.
