I'm on page 27 and bored to death. I'm gonna have a hard time keeping up with you ladies as I keep falling asleep. It's very slow moving and I am having much difficulty figuring out what they are saying. The prose... Early days yet so hoping it gets better.
Wondering if anyone else finds themselves reading the same line over and over to interpret it? Perhaps I'm just dumb.

No, that's happened to me as well. I'm at work so I won't get near this for a few more hours. Lol, I just logged into librarything and it appears I've won a copy.

I didn't win a thing this month. I have to head to work in a few hours so won't get very far w this tonight.
I'm now on chapter three and I hate to say it, I am still falling asleep. There are way too many characters for one thing. I feel as though I should write them all down cause just when I feel I got everyone situated in my mind and I know who is who, ANOTHER character is introduced.. another man, the aunt... Whoa! LOLAlso.. (spoiler if you haven't made it to ch. 3)*******Does anyone else think that the same Fitz whatever woman that attempted to blackmail Kitty is the same as the whore that shows up volunteering her services to Harris? (I'm forgetting names already. Sorry) I am thinking they are the same woman for some reason.. ? Does anyone else think that? The name is the same, but that was a common name back then.. the Fitz whatever. ******************
I am intrigued the most by Kitty. What is everyone else's thoughts so far?
There was an odd moment there in which James was feeling resentment towards Harriet as well.. threw me off a bit for a moment.. He was imagining her as he last saw her and then got angry.. it was rather odd. How do you do this spoiler thing?? I'm sorry, I can't figure it out. I can find no "insert spoiler" option.
I only made it about 40 pages before nodding off to sleep. I do like the writing, but still getting a handle on the characters. Thanks for the note about the list in the back, I hate it when they put it there and don't tell you.
I think you did fine on the spoiler tag. You can also see on the upper right hand side of the comment box where is says (some html is ok). Click that and find the spoiler tag code. Copy, paste and click in the center of those two commands and put your comments in there.
It looks like the other books Tillyard has written are NF and this is her first novel.

Thanks, gals. I will know now how to do that spoiler thing. I'm afraid my goal was to get to page 100 yesterday, but I didn't make it. I'm having a hard time with this one. Jill, LOVE your character assessment. I think I would like to off the General though, Kitty's husband. LOL
And p.s. The character list should be in the beginning. I agree. Though I wonder if it's in the back for a reason... If I was browsing the book store and came across a book and flipped through it and found it had 500 characters, I wouldn't buy it or want to read it. LOL
I'm on page 73, will read a bit further but I am very tired. He does look handsome in that uniform, but very arrogant at the same time.
I agree. BTW, I just stumbled across a long, but interesting video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uwNbnR...
I'm afraid I am way behind. Been busy doing chores today and now family is visiting. I will try to get back into it tomorrow but I am dangerously close to dnf'ing it. I am simply not enjoying it as much as you ladies. Too many male characters and not enough females.
I still can't say whether I'm enjoying it or not. The writing is lovely, but I've not yet been drawn into the story iself. Weekends are better for *busy* novels than the work week.
Another point is that we Yanks aren't as up to snuff on this bit of history as the Brits are, and I'm assuming you folks in OZ get some background in history class. British history doesn't get much attention in US public schools, at least it didn't in the 70's. I'd probably be very lost if I hadn't read the Marianne books and picked up more background on Napoleon.
I'm sticking with it, no worries. I should make some real progress later today once I walk away from the PC, get to the gym and settle down with the book.
Can I just skip the rest of part one and start part two and still know what is going on? LOL. I'm already lost so what different does it make? Regarding British history.. I didn't get any of it in my school years and that was the 80s and 90s. Nothing except the American Revolution.
I just finished part one and still have no idea what is going on. Moving forward...
I can't get a handle on Harriet at all, nor her husband. I was nodding off last night, but did I read correctly that (view spoiler)

Well I'm glad it wasn't James who did that. As mentioned in the previous thread I'm not doing well with it either.
