I like Denny's character a lot, I think mainly because he sort of finds his one way out even though he's quiet and most of the time, seems like a loser. Lol! I think he is closest to Ida Mancini's search for simplicity.
But why did he start building a stone castle?

"To build a world out of rocks and chaos" Due to the metaphysical twist in the book, I see Denny as an Apostle of the crackpots :) He physically builds an alternate house/world according to his vision…and when the divine origin of Victor disappears, the house falls down!

Funny thing is I just found this interview of Palahniuk and...
