SUMMARY: Elinor has an intense conversation with Willoughby in which he admits he did love Marianne and intended to propose to her until he was cut off by his relative Mrs. Smith after she learned of his scandal with Col. Brandon's ward Eliza. He apologizes and wishes to know he has Marianne's forgiveness and that she is recovering from her illness. Elinor assures him of this and he leaves. Colonel Brandon then arrives with Mrs. Dashwood, who are both overjoyed that Marianne is out of danger. The group returns to Barton Cottage. Marianne's illness has made her resolve to be as studious as she used to be passionate and to be kinder toward Colonel Brandon. The Dashwoods soon hear that Lucy is married and then Edward himself appears. When they ask after his new wife, he clears up the confusion: Lucy has transferred her affections to younger brother (and now heir) Robert. Now free, Edward proposes to Elinor. Colonel Brandon and Marianne also eventually marry.
