1. Explain Lennie and George's relationship. Use quoted text and embedded quotations to support your answer. Lennie and George are two almost completely opposite guys. Lennie is a big bear and George is a small man. In their relationship, George gets really annoyed by Lennie. George gets extremely fed up wen Lennie "forgets" little things. He just wants Lennie to leave when he thinks about the "swell time" he could have without him. However, even George is "only foolin" when he tells Lennie straight up. He would rather have Lennie with him, rather than noone. They have a good friendship overall. They just need to fix a few bugs and learn how to live with eachother.
2. According to your research, what does "of mice and men" imply? Do you see any foreshadowing in the text? use quoted text and embedd quotations to support your answer.
I found out that "of mice and men" comes from a poem called "To a Mouse". In the poem there is a quote that states: "The best laid plans of mice and men often go askew," which means that many plans will often go wrong. This makes me imply that A lot of the plans made by Lennie and George will go terribly wrong in the book. When Lennie forgets to "not say a word," it forshadows that a lot more of Georges plans will be ruined because of Lennie. However, he is "getting better" at remembering important things.
3. Post ONE of your dialectical journal entries from the first 37 pages. Post the quote and your response.
EVIDENCE:"Lennie dabbed his big paw in the water and wiggled his fingers so the water arose in little splashes; rings widened across the pool to the other side and came back again. Lennie watched them go. "Look, George, look what i done."(3)
COMMENTARY: In this paragraph, Lennie, the really big guy of the two, has just put his hand in the pool to drink the water. Lennie seems a bit slow. He forgets things and talks funny. The way the author describes him, he looks like a big bear type of thing. A really big guy with paws for hands (not literal).
4. In your own words, explain what DIDLS is used for and how it can be beneficial in our understanding of texts.
DIDLS help us understand the text better by making us analyze it closer than we normally would by just reading it through. It helps us look out for literary terms and forshadowing, along with diction and imagery.
e and George's have a brotherly love, or a love-hate relationship. When Lennie has the dead mouse in his hand and George wants Lennis to give it to him, "You gonna give me that mouse or do i have to sock you?" That's something that resembles the way brothers act. George then feels sorry for throwing the dead mouse that Lennie was petting into the forest, "Aw, Lennie, i ain't takin' it away jus' for meanness."2. Of Mice and Men implies that not everything goes as planned or something can change in a second, one thing goes wrong and then everything goes down hill from there. Of Mice and Men foreshadows that Lennie's and George's plans are soon going to change.
3. Evidence-
George: "Jesus, what a tramp. So that's what Curley picks for a wife."
Lennie: "She's purty."
Commentary-
This scene is when Curleys wife is in the bunk house asking the boys if they had seen Curley. The evidence i picked stuck out to me because it shows how different George and Lennie think. George thinks Curley's wife looks and and acts like a tramp when on the other hand Lennie is fascinanted with her and thinks she's pretty.

4. DIDLS is a way to annotate, it seperates Diction(author's word choice, Imagery(images created by author), Details(details in the information), Language(similes, metaphors, hyperboles, exc.), Syntax(the way an author builds a sentence). It helps use understand these differences in our work.
Q.1) george and lennie are simply good friends and we see this when george says" Lennie, for god' sakes don't drink too much, Lennie. you gonna be sick like you was last night" this shows us that george cares for lennie and looks out for him.Q.2) "of mice and men" stands for the things that describes the two characters. The "mice" part describes lennie since he likes to rub soft things and the "men" part describes george since hes the man of the group. I dont see any foreshadowing with the title.
Q.3)
Q.4) DIDLS is what is used to create annotations and is beneficial to us because it helps us understand the story more
1. Lennie and George's relationship is a brotherly friendship. George gets mad at Lennie for not remembering as if Lennie is his little brother. "I could get along so easy and so nice if I didn't have you on my tail." p.7.Along that George loves him as an older brother would to his younger brother." I was jus' foolin', Lennie. 'cause I want you to stay with me.' p.13.2. The saying "of mice and men" comes from the poem "To a Mouse" which applys that things aren't going to go as planed. It foreshadow that George and Lennie's plan for their future aren't going to go as they thought it should. "O.K. Someday- we're gonna get the jack together and we're gonna have a little house and a couple of acres an' a cow and some pigs...".p 14.
3. " If you don't want me I can go off in the hills an' find a cave.I can go away any time." p 12.
It shows that Lennie will do anything to make George happy even if it means he has to go away. It also shows that Lennie looks up to George and wants to help him out in any way that he can.By helping George out may show him that Lennie isn't as useless as he seems.
4. Diction is mainly used for DIDLS in "Of Mice and Men" and it is beneficial to help the reader know where the characters are from in the story. It is also beneficial by making the plot more interesting than boring.

I agree with your view on their relationship. It is shown throughout the beginning of the story that George is really annoyed with Lennie.
2. In the poem there is a quote that states: "The best laid plans of mice and men often go askew," this means that many plans will often go wrong. This makes me imply that a lot of the plans made by Lennie and George will go wrong in the book. Lennie tends to forget a lot of things for example he forgot when George told him to "not say a word," it forshadows that a lot more of Georges plans will be ruined because of Lennie.

The part where George tells Lennie he doesnt want him to go reminds me of how me and my sister can fight so much, but deep inside still love eachother.
Marissa wrote: "1. Lennie and George's relationship is a brotherly friendship. George gets mad at Lennie for not remembering as if Lennie is his little brother. "I could get along so easy and so nice if I didn't h..."i agree with your question one, because they act like if they were brothers one moment George hates him then in another he is okay with him.

1. The two characters in a way are both brotherly to each other in some figures the George acts as the big brother and nennie acts as the little brother. They both care and look out for each other such as in this example. " Hide in the brush till i come" this is an example of george looking out for lennie if they get in trouble.2.The Title is from a socttish poem called "To a Mouse" the tittle of the story can forsahdow a journy they have planned out but can go into ruins with a mistake I can possibly see something coming up in the near future.
3. " I seen her give Slim the eye."
I'm still trying to understand what the eye is but i think that this is an important part because it can show the ture side of Curly's wife. She's a tramp.
4.DIDLS is a very good way to invision a story in a different way and rreally get to break it down to a point easily understood by all audiences.
Christopher wrote: "1. The two characters in a way are both brotherly to each other in some figures the George acts as the big brother and nennie acts as the little brother. They both care and look out for each other ..."number 3 has a very good quote.
@Kelsey (#2) i agree with the your opinion when you said that a lot of plans will go wrong for George and Lennie as the story progresses. It seems that they have a difficult lifestyle and they are just trying to live a happy and comfortable life.
1. Lennie and George have a love/hate relationship. They have a sort of brotherly kind of love which means they fight but they still love each other. George can be mean to Lennie and sometimes says "Poor bastard," and "Your a fool."Lennie tries to be good for George but usually ends up disappointing him.2. The title "Of Mice and Men" comes from a poem that says "The best laid schemes of mice and men go often askew." That means that no matter how much you plan in life something can go wrong. George and Lennie's plan to "Have a little house and a couple of acres...,"may not happen like they have palnned.
3. "Lennie stoped chewing and swallowed. His face was concentrated. I.....I ain't gonna.....say a word."
This makes me wonder if there is something wrong with Lennie, or if he has a mental problem. "behind him walked his opposite, a huge man, shapeless of face, with large, pale eyes, with wide, slopping shoulders; and he walked heavily dragging his feet a little, the way a bear drags his paws," that is imagery and i see Lennie just as the author described him."An' don't you foo around," george is always telling Lennie not to fool around, and it's making me wonder if Lennie will eventually get in trouble in the future.
4. DIDlS stands for diction, imagery, details, language, and syntax. It is used to understand the book you are reading and take a closer look at what the author uses and how the author writes. DIDLS also helps us write annotations.
3. Evidence- " If you don't want me I can go off in the hills an' find a cave. I can go away any time." [pg. 12] Commentary- This shows how Lennie would do anything for George, because he looks up to him and wants him to be happy. It also shows how Lennie wants to help George, he doesn't want to be a bother to him.
4. DIDLS is used to help us annalyze and create annotations of the text. It helps us look for Diction, Imagery, and details.
@Alexia (#3) i think that george and lennie get along so well because their opinions are so different. the quote that you added about how george and lennie each thought differently about curley's wife is a pefect example. lennie seems to be more of a leader while george is a follwer; and that is why their relationship works so well in my opinion. if george was a leader like lennie they would most likely clash throughout the book because they would be very strong willed. on the other hand, if both lennie and george were follwers they'd be lost and just go through life listening to what everyone tells them to do.
1. George and Lennie have an odd relationship. George cares about plenty about Lennie's well being, but he shows it in a queer way. George insults Lennie and bosses him around all the time, but he does so that Lennie can stay away from trouble."... if you jus' happen to get in trouble like you always done before, I want you to come right here an' hide in the brush." George wouldn't want for anything to happen to Lennie.2. I found that the title "Of Mice and Men" was inspired by the poem "To a mouse." The poem tells you how at times thing may not come out as planned."We will have a big vegetable patch and a rabbit and a hutch and chickens. And when it rains in the winter, we’ll just say the hell with goin’ to work, and we’ll build up a fire in the stove and set around …” Lennie and George are already planning on having their own ranch, but planning may not always be the answer. Their plan may not come out the way they planned, so at times it can be better if one just goes along with the things that life throws at you.
3."Lennie's face broke into a delighted smile." Even though Lennie's apperance is of a cold hearted, insensitive type of person, but sometimes looks can fool you. In reality Lennie does not want to harm anyone , and with this quote you can tell. He is a sensitive person who cares about others, his warm “delighted smile” can make everything better, something that you will not expet from someone like him.
4.DIDLS helps you annotate on important things such as diction, imagery, details, language, and syntex. This can be help one to understand better a book.
