No not really, its all part of his retelling of the story so Mark and Courtney understand.
It does not really surprise me that he rambles, because it is not just a retelling for Mark and Courtney, it is also a journal where he records his thoughts and feelings. In one of his journals, (I think it was book 7) he said that writing in his journal is the only thing that keeps him sane. So yes, he rambles, but he kind of needs to.
