Paradox. It can be as complex as to take up an entire episode (or two) of Star Trek, or as simple as the Pinnochio Paradox: "If Pinnochio were to say 'my nose will now grow,' then what would happen?" Paradoxes hurt your head, as they're meant to.

The below is true.

The above is false.

Shayla (shaylaalexander) What came first, the chicken or the egg?

message 3: by Shayla (new)

Shayla (shaylaalexander) If a tree falls in the forest, and no one is around to here it, does it make a sound?

I'd like to think so.

Neither. A circle has no beginning.

message 6: by Shayla (new)

Shayla (shaylaalexander) I think it does, but that's why it's a paradox. Like a rubix cube!

I hate those...

message 8: by Shayla (new)

Shayla (shaylaalexander) Me too! But it's a real-life example of a paradox, right?

I agree

Iviana (The Sign Painter) Mʘ‿ʘP (thesignpainter) | 350 comments Shaystar wrote: "If a tree falls in the forest, and no one is around to here it, does it make a sound?"

Yes.

Iviana (The Sign Painter) Mʘ‿ʘP (thesignpainter) | 350 comments This statement is false.

Iviana (The Sign Painter) Mʘ‿ʘP (thesignpainter) | 350 comments Zeno's paradox:
In order to walk to the door, you must walk half way. In order to read halfway, you must walk halfway of the halfway. In order to reach halfway of the halfway, you must walk halfway of the halfway of the halfway. That continues, so basically you have to walk for infinity before you can reach the door.

But..how is that possible? *brain implodes*

Hope Shaystar wrote: "If a tree falls in the forest, and no one is around to here it, does it make a sound?"

Yes. Sound is little more than vibrations (that is, until they reach the ear,) and the fallen tree would still make vibrations even if no one was around to hear them.

message 15: by Hope (new)

Hope I have one:

What is the sound of one hand clapping?

Iviana (The Sign Painter) Mʘ‿ʘP (thesignpainter) | 350 comments Nothing. One hand clapping is nonexistent. To clap, according to the dictionary, is to strike the palms of one's hands together. Meaning, you need two palms to clap. Meaning, one hand clapping cannot exist. And also you can't clap any other part of your body.

message 17: by Hope (new)

Hope :)

I found an article once that read "One-Armed Man Applauds Helpful Teens"

message 19: by Larissa (new)

Larissa | 56 comments Is applaud the same as clap or are they different?

message 20: by Maggie, All mimsy were the borogroves, and the mome raths outgrabe (new)

Maggie (maggie-swift) | 415 comments Mod
The same, I believe. "Applauding" someone is sort of like "lauding" someone--giving them praise, whereas "clapping" could mean something totally different, like 'clapping someone on the back.' "Applaud" can also be figurative, but it's still funny.

message 21: by Larissa (new)

Larissa | 56 comments How is it funny?

message 22: by Vish (new)

Vish L (vertimus) I thought we were supposed to stick to the discussion of paradoxes...? :(

message 23: by Larissa (new)

Larissa | 56 comments I can't think of any

message 24: by Jo (new)

Jo (Penname8) If spiders are blind, why do they have eight eyes?

Iviana (The Sign Painter) Mʘ‿ʘP (thesignpainter) | 350 comments That's not really a paradox.

message 26: by Jo (new)

Jo (Penname8) Why not? The point of eyes is that they help us see.

Iviana (The Sign Painter) Mʘ‿ʘP (thesignpainter) | 350 comments They evolved differently. Some fish have eyes, but they can't see either.

message 28: by Jo (new)

Jo (Penname8) Good point.

Why do the Flinstones celebrate Christmas if they lived a thousand years before Christ?

How is Tarzan beardless if he doesn't have any razors or doesn't know how to shave?

Iviana (The Sign Painter) Mʘ‿ʘP (thesignpainter) | 350 comments They're cartoons. They're not meant to be realistic.

message 30: by Jo (new)

Jo (Penname8) Tarzan's a book.

Iviana (The Sign Painter) Mʘ‿ʘP (thesignpainter) | 350 comments It's both. Either way, it's fiction.

message 32: by Jo (new)

Jo (Penname8) But the chicken had to come from and egg, Thera!

Iviana (The Sign Painter) Mʘ‿ʘP (thesignpainter) | 350 comments Where did the first chicken come from? Its egg. Where did that egg come from?

Iviana (The Sign Painter) Mʘ‿ʘP (thesignpainter) | 350 comments Don't bring in religion. -_- Some people are Atheist, and supporting "fact" with religion no longer makes it a "fact".

Iviana (The Sign Painter) Mʘ‿ʘP (thesignpainter) | 350 comments -_- If anything, the chicken was a mutation from some dinosaur that eventually grew into the wild chicken which we domesticated and overfed in some sadistic way. That chicken, hatched from an egg.

Iviana (The Sign Painter) Mʘ‿ʘP (thesignpainter) | 350 comments From cells that multiplied. From here we start going into theories on how the frik anything actually came about, and nothing is certain. But the /chicken/ came from an /egg/.

message 37: by Vish (new)

Vish L (vertimus) Peace miladies!
Life can be traced to billions of years ago
1. Possibly a dino evolved into a chicken (the first chicken)
2. Or a dino egg evolved into a new egg, from which the first chicken came
3. Maybe both the above are false. Chickens still exist..which means that there must have been a hen AND a cock at the beginning.

message 38: by Jo (new)

Jo (Penname8) Maybe the chicken evolved from the said archeopteryx.

message 39: by Vish (new)

Vish L (vertimus) Er... I dont think we should involve religion. Different people have coflicting religious views.

Lets leave the chicken riddle to the Sciences.

message 40: by Larissa (new)

Larissa | 56 comments I agree with Thera. God made everything, including chickens.

message 41: by Hope (new)

Hope That's your opinion, Larissa.

Iviana (The Sign Painter) Mʘ‿ʘP (thesignpainter) | 350 comments Some of us don't believe that there's a god. Some of us are Atheistic.

Rudy | 484 comments The paradoxatuar is a mythical being that can only exist to those who don't believe in it and those who believe in it don't know it exists. If you found one in a clearing, what would happen?

Yes, I'm Buddhist. But I also consider myself an Atheist.

our existence would be destroyed Non-believers would be like, "Oh shit, it exists" and Believers would be like, "HAHAHA. WE'RE NOT INSANE."

message 47: by Rudy (new)

Rudy | 484 comments But then their positions would switch, and both would forget.

Iviana (The Sign Painter) Mʘ‿ʘP (thesignpainter) | 350 comments And it would keep switching. That's the outcome.
