I was thinking author; location; maybe themes (financial, murder etc)...

I would love some kind of implementation of "if you loved this book, you'd probably love this one..." but that would probably work better as a thread.
Like, like Harry Bosch - you'll probably like Harry Hole and so on.
Even when noir defines some books (and excludes the cozies), it still often seems too wide as a genre. But what I'd define as something of a specific style would not necessarily be the same as what the others would define the same book as. Which is why I love the discussions for finding new favorite authors...
Like, "I'm running out of Nesbø and Connelly to read. Suggest me something else at least as twisted".

i have just finished Yrsa Sigurordottir 's The silence of the Sea. Loved it. Loved the lawyer Thora. Who is middle-aged, divorced and raising her grandson. Average/Normal whatever that is. The descriptions of the ocean.She has a "kindness" to the characters. She gives them the benefit of the doubt. When they don't measure up it is a shock. But she avoids stero-typing. I am going to read all of hers. I will go back and read the lot.

And hey, I'm very open to suggestions right now. I'm reading a non-murder thing and it's driving me nuts (taken a week already... uncommon). Ideally something I already have, or can grab from the library's audiobook selection... since moving on the end of the week, I feel like I NEED some proper noir until then while cleaning and packing and whatnot...
