Agaat Group Read

A few of us will be reading Agaat in Jan & Feb 2012. We're actually going to read it in the Great African Reads group (sorry, don't mean to advertise here, just giving a bit of context :) ), but it'd be great if we can have two discussions: one here, one there! :) (Ohh, Jan/Feb is starting to look busy...)
Muphy, don't worry about advertising, we've been discussing GAR in this group a lot. You think we should have two separate discussions? Or should the people who want to discuss Agaat join GAR?
It's probably much easier to just have one discussion (just thinking of my scatterbrain and trying to manage two discussion threads etc. oh my goodness... :) ) but I don't want to "make" people join GAR just because they want to read Agaat at the same time. I'm happy either way! :)(I'm thinking of starting to read Agaat earlier otherwise there's no way I can manage... just ask Marieke, I'm forever behind group reads... hehe)
Agaat is a long book. I think i will be starting early as well. Don't worry about people joining GAR. Everyone who wants to read and discuss Wild Swans with The Imprinted Life group is joining that group for the discussion. That works for everyone.
Ah, awesome! That makes me feel much better. :DSo, it's Jan & Feb 2012 @ Great African Reads for those who want to read Agaat by Marlene van Niekerk with us!
Yes, we figured it was such a tome, there was no way we could only allocate one month for it. And still, I will be starting early...
Anne wrote: "Muphyn, I'm glad you feel better. D)Do we have two months to read the book? Jan and Feb?"
Yes.... Because it's loooong...and runs concurrently with Tour d'Afrique and some GAR members will want to read for both activities. Me being one of them lol. :)
Hi Marieke. That's great. Since you have mentioned several times that it is so long, it will be nice to have along time to read it.
I am in on the group read. I am also in the Great African Reads group. I may just change my choice for South Africa.
Angela wrote: "I am in on the group read. I am also in the Great African Reads group. I may just change my choice for South Africa."Yay! Now lemme check what your initial SA selection was... :D
I think the stress of waiting until next year to start reading from our lists has been too much for some people in this group. They're losing it. Even our discussion threads are upside down and no one seems to notice.
This is really bizarre. My post just went to the bottom of the page, below message 1 and has no message number on it. Is this an early Halloween trick?
Yes, it looks okay now, but they are in ascending order. And I have a notification that Chelsea posted something in Jenny's thread, but the post isn't there. Nothing from October is there.
Judy wrote: "Yay! Now lemme check what your initial SA selection was... :D"You mean people in this group change their selections? (tongue firmly planted in cheek:-)"
Lol. There are just too many good choices. I will probably read both but list one. I will have to change Turkey as well. I already started that book. Overly anxious.
Judy wrote: "Angela, I'll probably be like you and read two books from the same country for several of my selections. Its too hard to choose just one."That is very true. But look at it this way: you (we) might help someone else looking for a book from some country. ;)
I have listed this book as The Way of the Women (explains the link problems) so will be in on the group read too.
Judy, The above link to The Imprinted Life is for biographies, such as Emperor of China: Self-Portrait of K'ang-Hsi and The Collected Autobiographies of Maya Angelou in January and Wild Swans: Three Daughters of China in mid-March. Agaat is featured at Great African Reads. It's my #1 Book-of-the-Week. Btw, I'm a participant.
Who's reading Wild Swans?
I'm planning to read Wild Swans! And Kay, please do join us at Great African Reads if you would like. :)
...but are we discussing here and there? I have no problem discussing in two places. Goodreads has already pushed me beyond crazy.

I should start a new topic for "Wild Swans" to put it in the Calendar.
Asmah wrote: "I should start a new topic for "Wild Swans" to put it in the Calendar. ..."...Janice already made one!
Judy, what Asmah got today was a peek at Emperor of China: Self-Portrait of K'ang-Hsi. Looks very fine, imo, and often borrowed! :)
Hi! Please help me find the Agaat discussion. I have been to GAR, joined but don't see any discussion there. Help!!
Oh, my apologies, Pragya...it has not been set up yet. I'll take care of it shortly and link to it here.
Marieke wrote: "Oh, my apologies, Pragya...it has not been set up yet. I'll take care of it shortly and link to it here."Oh, alright. No problem. I am just trying to organize my January group reads and freaking out because there are so many to read. Happy New Year! :)
i'm having the same problem, Pragya! and i was trying to finish my personal 100 book challenge, which meant i stopped reading the Count of Monte Cristo in 2011---i meant to start reading either Agaat or 1q84 this morning, but since the Count is a library book, i settled on that--which is great! BUT it's going to set me back a little bit on my other reads. lol. oh, the problems we have! haha!anyway, i set up the Agaat thread in the Africa group here. Feel free to post your thoughts any time. we are pretty casual in that group. :D
I tried to get an early start on Agaat, but it went kind of slow for me and I was busier than expected over the holidays so I only got 100 pages in so far... and now its due back at the library and I can't renew :(
Marieke wrote: "... i set up the Agaat thread in the Africa group here. Feel free to post your thoughts any time. we are pretty casual in that group. :D ..."Can the location for Agaat Group Read be edited into Janice's message 1?
Marieke wrote: "i'm having the same problem, Pragya! and i was trying to finish my personal 100 book challenge, which meant i stopped reading the Count of Monte Cristo in 2011---i meant to start reading either Aga..."I know. Thankfully I'm not relying on library books. If I did, I would rather pay the fine than return it unfinished. ;)
Ha! Pragya! That's precisely why I've ended up reading Count of Monte Cristo before the others--it's a library book. I have one renewal left. But I hope to finish it quickly. It's a long book but a fast read. Kimberly-if you want to join the discussion at the Africa group it will probably be most active in January and possibly February. But we keep our threads open over there so you can rejuvenate the discussion if you aren't able to read it shortly. It's really no problem to join in "late."
Marieke wrote: "I think only Janice can do that....Janice?"Sorry. I wasn't paying attention. I've edited the first message to point to the location of discussion.
Marieke wrote: "you are too busy reading, Janice... 8)"LOL! *whispers*.. Shhhh, don't tell anyone, but I have to admit that I don't read every thread on this group. It's too busy to keep up with them all. Since I'm not reading Agaat, I haven't been following this thread.

haha! it's totally okay...i can't follow them all either, here or any other group for that matter.
